More Stupid Comments

So, today as I was reading through this post, I discovered a lengthy anti-Bush comment preceded by the following taunt:

I don't think you have the b***s to allow this post to the blog. Let's see.
Well, guess what? The comment was published... But I've taken it down. Not because of what the comment said -- it wasn't particularly intelligent -- but because comments that imply that we (a) censor comments based on ideology and/or (b) don't have enough confidence in our positions to handle opposing views are immediately nixed regardless of what they say.

Why? Because look around. Read the comment thread in any post. There is an abundance of opposing views present in the comment threads, and I am beyond insulted at any insinuation that comments are screened or censored by ideology. I'm sick of it. And I'm sick of people who pretend like the only way they can get their comments published is with these phony challenges. Further, I'm not going to empower any pompous liberal commenter by giving him/her reason to believe that I've been shamed into letting their comment be published. Not a chance.

I've said it plenty of times before, if you want to guarantee that your comment will not be published or deleted, then go ahead and accuse of censoring and of being too afraid to publish a particular comment. It's only your time that is being wasted. If you want to contribute to the conversation, get off your high horse and give us your opinion, not your ego.

Over the past few years, I've received plenty of complaints from readers who have been fed up with loony liberals who don't contribute to the conversation in the comment threads. I've considered it a source of pride that, unlike liberal blog communities, we allow opposing views in our comment threads. If some unintelligent egotistic liberal wants to pretend that B4B censors, then that person doesn't deserve to have their comments published. Plain and simple.

UPDATE: Looking further, I discover that the same person who made the comment cited above has been posting on B4B since mid October. Every single comment made was published.

I thoroughly enjoy most of the liberal comments. Some of them raise good points, but most of them exemplify just how far left the left has gone. And many of those posters are convinced they represent the majority of the country. I am not sure if they even represent the majority on their block.

It reminds me of Pauline Kaels famous line when she learned Nixon won:

"How can that be? No one I know voted for Nixon!"

They tend to live with blinders on, only wanting to recognize what they perceive to be reality.

Matt,

You and Mark are far more tolerant in your comment policy than I would be. Liberals falsely believe they have the right to say any and everything they choose, however they choose to say it, truthful or not, even on blogs which they do not own or control. I even tone my comments back occasionally for fear of overstepping my privileges; although, I'm sure the Liberals here wouldn't believe that!

As for the comments you deleted, I would have deleted it based on sheer length and lack of substance!

These people who "expect" their comments to be deleted remind me of the callers to Limbaugh who claim he cuts off callers. I've been listening to him, almost every day, for five years, and I've yet heard him cut off a lib trying to make a valid point. I have, however, heard him cut off callers who claim to be conservative, then go off on some tangent about some issue, sounding all liberal and the like.

I've just returned from a lively hour at my favourite lefty blog, americablog.com. Those kooks don't like trolls at all. They don't like opposing views, but at least the guy who runs the blog lets me hang out. I have had posts deleted for no reason, other than I dissented with their views. neocon, you should check it out over there; those kooks are far more talented, and funny, than the kooks who pollute this blog...

Neocon-I think your last thought is an example of neocons like yourself looking in the mirror and projecting on your evil enemies those darn commie liberals.

Too funny, almost as bad as the Liberals now accusing the liberal press of unfair treatment because the war protest marches aren't getting the attention they think they should.

Unlike the antiwar group and Democrats running for the party's nomination, , the rest of world is accepting the fact that the surge is working.

"Liberals falsely believe they have the right to say any and everything they choose, however they choose to say it, truthful or not, even on blogs which they do not own or control."

Amen! What kind of fascist thinks they have a right to say whatever stupid thought comes into their stupid heads! What do you think this is, Pakistan or something?

So, accusations of censorship lead to...censorship. Brilliant refutation strategy. Right down to even censoring the word "balls". That's classic. And if you claim that allowing a comment to be read for a period of time BEFORE you censor it isn't actually censorship, then what is it? If there really is nothing to the allegations of censoring, why do you react to them in this way? You're just corroborating those accusations with your own words: even a subjective IMPLICATION that you guys are insecure in your views is met with censorship, regardless of the literal wording of the comment. That's a pretty wide-open criteria for censorship. Congratulations on looking like a petty despot.

Mark and Matt,
Thanks for the forum.

Patrick, they have the right to publish whatever comment they want. It's their blog. And I think it's totally understandable. If you ran your own blog, then the last thing you'd want to do is let your enemies think they've bullied you into submission. I think theirs is a clever strategy.

Posted by: KCJ at November 6, 2007 09:22 PM

You certainly have the right to accept or refuse publication of any comments you wish, but I guess the part I don't get is how censoring a comment is not actually censoring a comment.

If you take down a comment because you don't like what someone said, then that's censoring it, right?

Maybe I'm drunk or something and need someone to spell it out for me.

Posted by: Doc Washboard at November 6, 2007 11:22 PM

patrick, not very bright are you?

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2007 12:43 AM

Doc, yes well maybe you're drunk. He pulled the comment solely because it said it would be pulled for the other crazy liberal ideas in it. They don't do that here. Just read the posts for yourself.

But if you're not going to read and just come in and spout crap and hate and then say "you'll probably censor it anyways" (Because of your ignorance), well I can see why it should be pulled.

Argue it if you must, I haven't seen you post here before so I expect you're of the ignorant type. You could just read, but who needs knowledge when hate fills the gaps so nicely?

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2007 01:16 AM

Kahn, it seems that you have quite a bit of hate to offer yourself. Saying that other's "aren't very bright" is hardly constructive criticism.

Look, what difference does it make if the comments are stupid? What if a majority of the comments contained the word "balls" or some other profanity? Surely that wouldn't detract from the points made in the blog itself. I read blogs because I want to hear the author's opinion. It would be silly to judge the blog based on the comments.

In response to the original post: If you want to maintain your integrity when you say that you don't censor, well, then don't censor. Even the word "balls". If you do intend to remove certain comments (which is perfectly reasonable), then say it and stick with it. Don't say one thing while simultaneously doing another, it erodes your credibility.

"Some of them raise good points, but most of them exemplify just how far left the left has gone."

Exactly, but i see it from the other side. Thats why I visit BlogsForBush, it honestly makes me laugh what some commenters write.
