Coming in Second and Third on the List...

...of people who think that Joe Lieberman should be the GOP Vice Presidential candidate in 2008:

Peter Weher at NRO's The Corner, following on Bill Kristol at the Weekly Standard.

Unless someone can find someone saying this prior to mid-2005, I think I was the first person to suggest that Lieberman is the ideal candidate for Vice President on the Republican ticket in 2008 - though it might have to go through a name change on the party ID. In 1864, it was GOP Lincoln and Democrat Johnson, and I believe they called it a "Union" ticket.

The thing needed, right now, is national unity. The divisions in our nation only help our enemies, and we must show the world that the anti-war left is a marginal political ideology. Having a GOP/Democrat national unity ticket in 2008 is the best means of demonstrating that as far as the war goes, America is united in its quest for victory.

Oh good grief, there's a winning idea... Stopping in at this site never disappoints...

I see your idea of "unity" still aligns with Bush's definition. Actually, as long as you run "unity" in quotes I'd think you were on to something.

We love Joe but let's not do anything hasty, buddy. I do wish Joe would stop fence sitting and join the team that appreciates his values & character - the GOP.

Anti-war isn't just the the left Mark. About 70% of the american public want troops to start comming home from Iraq immediately and most if not all troops out in a year. Also, beside being an Iraq hawk, Joe is relatively liberal on other positions.

Mark,

So if you want a GOP/Democratic national unity ticket, you'll be cool with Ron Paul/Russ Feingold?

Last I checked, Joe Lieberman was an independent.

Sleepygene,

Well, if that's true? Then that means the Liberal propaganda is working, and that Liberals are misleading a "majority" of the American public into thinking that the War on Terror is "hopeless".

IF this be the case, then I think Conservatives need to getting to work fast, and getting the true message out.

That there are Radical extremists out there who would stop at nothing to destroy all that we've accomplished and future attacks are imminent if we don't keep working to acheive total peace in the region of Iraq.

Gene,

Ok, now I'm just getting downright tired of that - please find me the poll which has the question, "Do you want American troops out of Iraq by a year from now?" with 70% saying "yes".

I don't think you'll be able to find that - but, if you've got it, let's see it.

Martin,

Still officially a Democrat - and Paul, as a libertarian, is not someone I'm enthusiastic about. He is running a primo, insurgent campaign, but I disagree with him on the war, on trade, on social issues...

jayhay,

Lieberman would bring at least 10% of Democrat voters over, the GOP would retain almost all its 2004 support...so, the ticket would likely win 55% of the vote...ie, a higher percentage than any ticket since 1984. That is unity enough.

CJ,

Actually, I prefer he remain as a registered Democrat and, indeed, continue to caucus with the Democrats for orginization purposes until after next year's vote...we want a Democrat on the ticket..we want to show the world that America can get behind victory even after the nasty, anti-war effort of the left.
