An Open Letter to Senator Norm Coleman

Dear Senator Coleman:

I am asking this both as a constituent, and as one whose son sacrificed nearly two years of his young life serving in Iraq: With all due respect, would you and Senator Warner quit trying to micromanage the Iraq conflict?

Your call for troop withdrawal, as "symbolic" as it may be, should not be yours, Senator Warner's, Senator Reid's, nor any other senator nor congressman.

That call should be made by the Commander in Chief, in consultation with the generals on the ground.

I can see no reason for your call for a "symbolic" troop withdrawal, other than for political calculation.

You seem to be trying to walk a fine line between pleasing the rabid anti-war folks who will settle for nothing less than unqualified defeat, and those of us who want to stay the course until the mission is complete.

In reality, you are "pleasing" neither side. In reality, you are only complicating things with rhetoric. Our enemy in Iraq (and, incidentally, around the globe) needs to hear the unequivocal message that there is no chance for him to succeed. He does not get that message when he hears heartening news that micromanaging politicians in the United States want to remove the force that is keeping him from achieving domination of Iraq and its oil-rich resources.

In the midst of what can only be called unqualified successes with regard to the surge, your timing couldn't be worse. Let the surge take its course; let General Patraeus and President Bush make their rightful decision of when it is proper to pull our troops.

Sincerely,

Leo Pusateri

Leo,

Go easy on Stormin' Norman; he's got an uphill battle in '08, against Al Franken!

Leo,

Does Coleman have any problem with the "moderates" in Minnesota? If not, then who is he trying to pander to?

In reality, Norm is trying to play both sides of the fence for his own personal political gain, be damned with the soldiers or the rest of the country. For that, I say impeach him.

Get rid of all members of Congress that lack a spine. That would include many Republicans and every Democrat.

Mr. Pusateri,
Please accept my condolences and sympathy for your family who's son made the decision to serve our country so bravely. No matter what our own opinions about the war in Iraq are, it's our responsibility to think about and appreciate all the brave men and women who serve our country every day.
Sincerely,
Bernie Bahr, NJ
PS My Dad recently passed away and he was a Navy veteran; and I cannot express how proud he was to be so.

NJ Liberal, no sympathy nor condolences needed, but thank you anyway!

Doug did what he did willingly, and I am more than proud of him!

Many thanks to your brave father, NJ--

I'm sure that he was a man of stellar character!

Sincerely, Leo!

neo,

Joe Leiberman is a Democrat. A throwback to the days when Dems had spines. The rest are spineless worms.

Joe Lieberman is an Independent, and a fine man.

So true Leo, I want this flip flopper to be in lock step with the President right up to the November 08 election.

Leo,
It sounds as if NJ Lib misunderstood your post to believe that your son sacrificed his life in Iraq. Thankfully, that does not appear to be the case.

Regardless of how I feel about this war, I do appreciate what your son and all of our service men and women have done and continue to do for all of us. I also lost my father who was a WWII veteran and I know many who served from Korea, Viet Nam and some who are currently in Iraq. I am proud of them all.

As I indicated, I do not agree with this war. However, the decision to go to war and the decision to end it are two different issues. We are in Iraq for better or worse. As senseless as this war seems to me, it seems even more senseless to pull out at this juncture. We as a country have way too much invested in lives, resources, and our future to simply throw up our hands and leave because we don't agree with Bush and want to prove him wrong (I think history will take care of that one way or another). The damage that would be caused by a quick withdrawal will far outweigh the benefits of 'cutting our losses'. However, we can't stay forever. There has to be a more focused plan and the Iraqis have to be on board far more than they currently are in order to swing public opinion far enough to garner support for the continuation of this war.

WE DO NOT HAVE THE TROOPS TO CONTINUE THIS ADVENTURE BEYOND SPRING '08. Unless we start a draft, or we increase (again) the ratio of time soldiers spend overseas, we have no choice but to draw down in the spring. Mark my words, Bush will begin hinting that since things are going so well, we can start drawing down. This is not a strategic choice, it's just simple math, But it will be sold as a sign of our 'progress', whatever the reality on the ground is.

Sorry, Bush may be driving the car, but it's Norm's job to micromanage the gas. That's a consti-ma-tutional thingy-ma-jigger.

Why do you hate the constitution? I suppose because it's always getting in the way of Bush's narcissistic ego-maniacal juggernaut.

Leo,

It is the job of Congress to oversee the Commander-in-Chief. When the previous Congress refused to do this, they were thrown out of office.
