Iraqi Citizens Step Up

More bad news for defeatists:

FORWARD OPERATING BASE HAMMER — A group of Iraqi citizens in al Arafia, near Jisr Diyala, are taking steps to secure their own homes and neighborhoods.

Tips from the group helped lead Company D, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment to a weapons cache on Aug. 15 in an area outside Al Arfia.

Soldiers from Company D discovered seven 107 mm rockets and 10 anti-tank mines. They also detained two individuals for questioning.

The Concerned Citizens is a group of local residents who have begun a reconciliation campaign with various extremist groups, according to 1st Lt. Mark Mendes, of Westchester, N.Y., fire support officer for Company D, currently attached to the 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment. Many of their members are former Iraqi Security Force members.

The project was entirely conceived by Iraqi citizens and is run solely on local, volunteer leadership and participation. It is open to any citizens willing to take a stand against crime in their community.

Joining the program is simple. A volunteer must talk to either the local National Police commander, or one of the many Concerned Citizen leaders. Mendes said citizens can also ask any member to point them in the right direction. Each member is then required to take an oath upon joining.

The Concerned Citizens, now 49 members strong, are securing their community, which lies in the 3-1 Cavalry’s area of operation, with little help from the Americans, Mendes explained.

This is called the growth of a body politic - something mostly absent in the Moslem world because, on the whole, corrupt tyrants and/or theocrats don't allow an independent, civil society to develope. Such things are hard to control, you see? But now the Iraqi populace, mirroring those Iraqis who have joined the security forces, are taking steps to make their own neighborhoods safe - the Iraqis, it would seem, are tiring of terrorists and more run-of-the-mill criminals who have been preying on the Iraqi people for years now.

This is what we're fighitng for - Iraqis taking charge of their own destiny.

Mark,

How is that upsetting to individual that don't agree with US soldiers being in Iraq? I am very happy that the citizens of Iraq are showing that they care about their country and are doing things to curb the killing.

Grow up Mark, any success in Iraq is just good news.

Its good to see positive things Mark. However, a group of 49 people in a country of many million is hardly "overwhelming evidence" of things turning around in Iraq. It is a small drop in the ocean of chaos, disaster, and death that is the Iraqi occupation.

"This is what we're fighitng for "

LOL

So whats the problem here?

49 people that feel safe enough to take action on thier own in a country where it was once violent as to be foolhardy to try and do something remotely similar.

If bringing the troops home is really the goal of all the leftoids here, this news should be shouted from the roof tops. These 49 people are one more step towards a free Iraq that can stand up for itself.

One more step towards bringing home our troops. Victorious and proud of a job well done.

Oh wait. Its probably that last part you lefties dont like so much, isnt it?

Tell us something we don't know LiberalT...please.

If you hadn't noticed, 911 changed the world and guess what...we found it to be much more violent and with a larger threat of terrorism than ANYONE thought.

Now the question to you: Do you think Slick Willy and his Queen new about the threat but didn't alert the world because it wasn't popular? Or did he simply turn a blind eye?

At least the VP had the juevos to take a different position...unlike the noodle-spined libs in this country.

Very positive news. Maybe they can help us find the 190,000 missing weapons. Surely this many weapons would make a big pile.

Check out this article, and see how democracy in the Middle East might be a mixed blessing.

Interesting article, Jay. Here's the latest installment by way of Lebanon. It's an article that describes how the heavily favored Christian candidate, Amin Gemayel, ended up losing in the provincial elections last week because he was obviously backed by the US. Unfortunately, US identity has become the kiss of death for Middle East causes of late.

Rockville,

RE: "...any success in Iraq is just good news."

Are you that naive or just denying the facts? You do have a television, radio, newspaper, or Internet connection, right? If you do, you should know the Democrats and their Left-Wing Fringe Kooks believe that success in Iraq is bad news for them!

There are other stories and reports, but I'll start with the following:

Investor's Business Daily, August 06, 2007, Wanting The Worst...

"...some Democrats now admit good news from Iraq is bad news for them. ...It's bad news for their party if we win it."
"When Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid raised the white flag and proclaimed the war in Iraq to be lost, we were appalled that a major U.S. political leader would so render aid and comfort to the enemy by calling the young Americans whom they allegedly support a bunch of losers who were risking their lives for nothing."
"Now the surrender monkeys of the Democratic Party are starting to fess up and admit that they simply don't think it's in their selfish political interest for the U.S. to emerge a winner in Iraq."
"A spokesman for Pelosi ... Democratic leaders are 'not willing to concede there are positive things to point to' in Iraq."
"...The Democrats don't want us to win if it ruins their chances in 2008."
"...Rep. Nancy Boyda, a Kansas Democrat, got up and walked out at a recent hearing of the Armed Service Committee when retired Gen. Jack Keane said that 'progress is being made' by the good guys, American and Iraqi."
"...Ms. Boyda said that 'there was only so much (good news) that you could take until we, in fact, had to leave the room for a while . . . after so much of the frustration of having to listen to what we listened to.' ... Gen. Keane: 'We are on the offensive and we have the momentum.'"
"...She expressed concern that Gen. Keane's remarks 'will, in fact, show up in the media and further divide this country.' Too late."
"...A New York Times-CBS News poll released July 24 showed 42% felt military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, up from 35% in May. So distressed by the 'counterintuitive' result were Times editors that they ordered the poll retaken. Same result."
"The desperation felt by Democrats that we might be winning in Iraq was expressed by the No. 3 Democrat in the House, Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C. Clyburn recently observed that a positive September report from surge architect Gen. David Petraeus could lead to as many as 47 'Blue Dog' Democrats to oppose a withdrawal timetable. Clyburn said that such good news would be 'a real big problem for us.'"

The real problem with the Iraq War was Republicans allowing the Democrats to spend the past six-plus years with their anti-Bush, anti-war, and anti-American propaganda campaign... permitting the Democrats and their Left-Wing Fringe KOOKS to mislead and lie to the American people... convincing the voters that America will lose; and -- worst of all -- providing aid, comfort, hope, and encouragement to the terrorists... encouraging the to kill American troops and Iraqi men, women, and children to provide the Democrats with the news they need and use to defeat America!

AAR,

What are you saying. My comment is that it is a good thing to have Iraq showing that they care about their country. It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. You just want to keep stuff up by trying to pit one side against the other.

You just want to keep s*#t up. Get a life.

Rockville,

Mark said: "More bad news for defeatists [Democrats/Liberals]..."

You asked: "How is that upsetting to individual that don't agree with US soldiers being in Iraq?"

Then you said: "Grow up Mark, any success in Iraq is just good news."

Then I said: "Are you that naive or just denying the facts? ..."

Mark correctly observed... you naively (or for some other reason) asked... and I correctly answered!

What part of that do YOU not understand? ! ! ! ! !

I've got a life. Why don't you go back to nursing and help those who can't afford the ever increasing healthcare costs Democrats have made unaffordable to millions of Americans?!!!

Associated Press, 20 Aug, 2007...

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. military officials are narrowing the range of Iraq strategy options and appear to be focusing on reducing the U.S. combat role in 2008 while increasing training of Iraqi forces, a senior military official told The Associated Press on Monday.
The military has not yet developed a plan for a substantial withdrawal of forces next year. But officials are laying the groundwork for possible overtures to Turkey and Jordan on using their territory to move some troops and equipment out of Iraq, the official said. The main exit would remain Kuwait, but additional routes would make it easier and more secure for U.S. troops leaving western and northern Iraq.

More Republicans coming home to vote in '08!

Wahhhhh!!!

In case you haven't noticed, rock-smoker, this is how politics is conducted. Hell, son, you're trying to get the most divisive woman in the country, if not the world, elected leader of the free world. What's wrong with you, you idiot?
