Anecdotal Evidence

The Associated Press, doing a story on the Democrats' weekly radio address, offers a pathetic puff-piece on how great minimum wage increase is.

A North Carolina waitress on Saturday lauded the Democratic-initiated increase in the minimum wage, saying in the party's weekly radio address that the extra money will have a ripple effect on millions of lives.

Fawn Townsend, a nightshift server in Raleigh, N.C., criticized Republicans for blocking efforts to raise the minimum wage over the last 10 years. The Democratic-led Congress approved the increase earlier this year and President Bush signed it into law in May.

"Millions of Americans now have a little more in their paychecks to help pay for basic necessities like food and clothing. And now more Americans can save to build a better future for themselves and their families," Townsend said.

And many will lose their jobs because of the wage increase. But screw them right? At least the Democrats found a loyal Democrat waitress with a happy story to make the case for bad economic policy, and regurgitating Democrat talking points that we've heard enough times already from Nancy Pelosi (and didn't believe when she was using them).

Mayve if the White House enforced the laws on the books about hiring illegals there would be enough jobs let for Americans
Perhaps you can post a link showing how many jobs were lost and how many new unemployment cases were filed by people who were making the minimum wage ?

Are you seriously criticizing the Democrats for using anecdotal evidence? Half of the pieces on the War in Iraq on this very site rely extensively on to prove the surge is working, see:

http://www.blogsforbush.com/mt/archives/2007/08/iraqi_citizens.html#comments
-- which argues that one group of Iraqi Citizens standing up is proof that things are changing...

I don't think that the story of one waitress is a case for a higher minimum wage, but I do think that its a hypocritical to argue that the democrats are wrong for using anecdotal evidence.

Let's see if "the sky is falling" predictions come true. This only affects some states anyway as most blue states have a higher minimum than federal. I'm sure that if unemployment doesn't go up the Bush tax cuts will get the credit and if it does, it will be the Democrats who caused the Bush recession.

I call for a Living Wage, which means, all wages must be highe than the Proverty line.

People before Business and you will make a strong economy.

This poor waitress is just a stooge.

Nobody in this great country has to "make a living" on the minimum wage; this talking point is worn out.

Alas, the unwashed continue to believe the propaganda...

Matt your arguement would be more convincing if the last paragraph didn't have missing words and grammar errors. Alas, the democrat waitress probably wouldn't know the differnce.

More important than any loss of jobs are the large numbers of teenagers who will not enter the workforce. The minimum wage was once an entry level position for kides under 21 to enter the workforce and get some training.

Now with the hourly rate as high as it is, many companies will no longer hire these young people. Many who would otherwise be gainfully employed, learning the value of a dollar, will be out in the street learning how to scam.

Thanks dems for working to undermine our system and our country.

Really, how good of a worker are you if you have to depend on the State or Federal gov't to give you a raise?

If you cannot earn more than the minimum wage over your life time, it says more about you being a poor employee.

Anytime anyone tries to plug an extra buck onto the minimum wage we get this same broohaha about how jobs will be lost because employers won't be able to hold onto people. This is true in theory--if you raised the minimum wage to 12 bucks an hour than jobs would be lost. But quite simply when New Jersey raised the minimum wage it didn't lose jobs. When the minimum wage was raised here in Pennsylvania last year we didn't lose jobs. As a matter of fact in states where the minimum wage is higher pay is higher across the board and the cost of living isn't really all that different than in states where a nine dollar an hour job with medical and retirement is a prize plum that people dream about.

Why not keep minimum the way it is for 20 more years!?

Then everyone will have jobs but have to live in slums and be malnourished (just as long as they can stand up straight) and be even more miserable than they are now.

They don't complain now (not that they could do anything about it) so why would they complain then!?

Boy, I'm sure glad GREEDy conservatives got it all figured out!

Well... I would like to hear evidence that jobs would be lost. Don't have any? Wouldn't be the first time you made a sweeping claim with nothing to back it up... This post is misleading and hypocritical, but hey, who am I to judge?

USA, you should read or reread what Bill in GA wrote.

Perhaps those who aren’t employed or those “only” making minimum wage should address the real problem – themselves. We know there are jobs out there. Are you employable? Did you finish high school or get a GED? Do you have any technical or trade skills? Are you clean, well groomed? Are you willing to work evenings, nights, weekends, rotating shifts and holidays? Do you have reliable transportation? Do you possess simple math and writing skills? You might be surprised how many people can’t even make monetary change without a struggle. Are you personable and dependable? Do you have a good work record? Are you drug free? Are you willing to relocate? Are you honest and reliable???

If you’ve mismanaged your life and don’t take personal responsibility, why should others be burdened with your lack of effort and planning?

Who are you to judge? Good question; in spite of your snotty demeanor there are academic studies that support the idea of minimum wage increases cost jobs, especially among teenagers and inner-city at-risk youths.
Here's just one of them;
Neumark, David and William Wascher, The Effect of New Jersey's Minimum Wage Increase on Fast-food Employment: A Re-evaluation using Payroll Records. National Bureau of Economic Research: Cambridge, MA, 1995.
