Senate Rejects Moving Gitmo Detainees To U.S.

The Senate, in a 94-3 vote for The McConnell amendment, rejected transferring the terrorist detainees at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to the United States.

Senator Mitch McConnel (R-KY) made a statement following the vote.

“Some in Congress have actually proposed that we require the President to move terrorist detainees held at Guantanamo Bay to the continental United States and keep them here. That means moving them into facilities in cities and small towns across America in states like California and Illinois and Kentucky. Well I can guarantee you that my constituents don’t want terrorists housed in their backyards in Ft. Knox, Ft. Wright or anywhere else in the Commonwealth. I know I don’t,” McConnell said. “The Senate has now overwhelmingly expressed its view that it’s better for the safety and security of the American people that terrorists at Guantanamo Bay are not moved into American communities. And it says to the American people that the United States Senate does not want these terrorists housed on our soil, in our communities.”

That is absurd. kblack, cannunckguy, CO, and all of canada would love to provide for these freedom fighters! Maybe France can integrate them into their Sharia law colonies, within France?

I would prefer they live with Schumer, Kemmedy, Durbin, Moore, Pelosi, Reid. Or let the NYT house them while they at least start books on these freedom fighters. If the 1st chapter is finished by the original author I would be surprised. Let freedom ring!

Deleted - racist slurs

Rick-

Actually... that would probably piss them off (see: Saddam Hanging). We either need to charge these people or let them go. I would prefer it if it stayed outside of civilian courts though.

I'v got an idea what we should do with those towell-head terrorist sons of bithces.Maybe if they're terrorist pals back home saw them all get tied to poles and shot on TV,maybe they would think twice nest time before messing with the U.S.A!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: rick4bush

Aren't you the sterotypical racist. We(the American people) do not even know who is being detained or why for that matter. I guess this is how our American Citizen in Iran feels. She is more then likely innocent, but we don't even know the charges except that it is payback to the US.

Because of our behavior you can bet more and more of our citizens will be detained in foreign countries.

It isn't fair for the people of our country to foot this bill to house and feel suspected terrorists. Why not charge them, try them and hang them? This would save us money to spend on Iraq.

For the benefit of you terrorist-loving liberals, may I suggest Project L.A.R.K?

Subject: Adopt a terrorist.

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, D.C.

Dear Concerned Citizen:

Thank you for your recent letter criticizing our treatment of the
Taliban and Al Qaeda detainees currently held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The administration takes these matters seriously, and your opinion was
heard loud and clear here in Washington You'll be pleased to learn that,
thanks to the concerns of citizens like you, we are creating the
Terrorist Retraining Program, to be called the "Liberals Accept
Responsibility for Killers" program, or LARK for short. In accordance
with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to place one
terrorist under your personal care.

Your detainee has been selected and scheduled for transportation to your
residence next Monday. Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud is to be cared for
pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of
admonishment. We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your
standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly
recommended in your letter.

Although Ahmed is sociopathic and extremely violent, we hope that your
sensitivity to what you described as his "attitudinal problem" will help
him overcome this character flaw. Perhaps you are correct in describing
these problems as mere cultural differences.

Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat
and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail
clippers. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive
devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those
items locked up, unless you feel that this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with your wife or daughters since he
views females as a subhuman form of property. This is a particularly
sensitive subject for him. He has been known to show violent tendencies
around women who fail to comply with the dress code that he considers
appropriate, but I'm sure that over time they will come to enjoy the
anonymity offered by the bhurka. Just remind them that it is all part of
respecting his culture and his religious beliefs.

Thanks again for your letter. We truly appreciate it when folks like you
inform us of the proper way to do our job. Take good care of Ahmed and
good luck!

Cordially,
Don Rumsfeld

BTW, please send my regards to Don.

If you would have done your homework, you sad sack of S**t, she has dual Iranian and American citizenship. That makes her American and maybe it is you that should be held over there!

Posted by: rockville [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 19, 2007 11:52 PM

I assume you have never been inside one of our prisons Leo. I worked several years of my career in criminal justice and I have been in dozens of prisons. From a standpoint of personal safety, these guys are lucky to be Gitmo along with their buddies rather than in an American prison surrounded by our garden variety psychopaths. Beyond a doubt, we would be at no personal risk if these guys were moved here, and Gitmo would be removed as a black mark on our national honor.

Posted by: Thrower [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 20, 2007 12:46 AM

Rick-- a little over the top on your choice of nomenclature there. Not cool!

Thrower--the only "black mark" on our national honor I see are the bleeding heart liberals who, just to raise a stink about something, complain that we're are monsters, mis-treating the poor, misunderstood prisoners at Gitmo when nothing can be further from the truth.

They're not boy scouts. They are the dregs of the dregs, who would have no compunction against offing any citizen of the United States if given a chance. They are, in short, savages, in every pejorative sense of the word.

We are not dealing with men who would sit down at a campfire with us and roast s'mores, if we'd only have the good sense to sing a verse or two of Kumbaya with them.

That's what many libs fail to realize!

I think they should be allowed to relocate to Florida. Its not THAT far to swim.

Great posts rick4bush. A good representation of conservative viewpoints. Complete with racial slurs, juvenile sexual references and excellent spelling and grammar. I guess this doesn't qualify under the guidelines of Mark's opening thread, so keep 'em coming rick!

Rana - The war on terror is a war. Not a criminal case. Therefore, charging these people is not the answer. As an example look at the roughly 2 milliion soliders held during WWII. We held them without any charges because we were not alleging criminal acts. We were fighting a war and they were held under the Laws of War. The Laws of War has been a practice of all nations and certainly is the policy of the US for the War on Terror.

It has been distorted by opponets of the War, the drive by media and liberals that the people held at gitmo or any other place that they deserve the rights and protections afforded to those accused of crimes. That entire paradigm is not applicable in this case. It was not applicable for World War 2 and it is not in this case. Even with some of the recent Supreme Court rulings, all of which have upheld a broad definition of the War powers of the president and the Laws of War.

rick4bush,

I don’t know if you’re truly a conservative minded person who’s really pissed off (understandably) and expressing himself (rather poorly) -or- if you’re a liberal minded person who thinks he can portray the Republicans / Conservatives a black eye with the globally applied racist slurs.

If you’re of the former group, I think your point would carry a great deal more weight if you were able to get your point across with a little more “literal” class (it really is more fun and far more effective).

If you’re of the latter group, get lost.

I have a very high respect for B4B and feel that the moderator should consider omitting part of the above post as it tends to reflect poorly on them - Thank you.

Posted by: DM at July 20, 2007 09:40 AM

I'm not saying that it is a criminal matter. I'm saying that we need to determine what these people did and punish them accordingly. If we find out that they didn't do anything or that they are no longer a threat, then we need to get rid of them and stop using tax money to feed, clothe, and guard them.

Posted by: Rana Quijotesca [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 20, 2007 11:35 AM

Rana,
You're talking right passed Dudley. Read his response again and think about this; when you write "determine what these people did" you’re implying "charge them with a crime."

What Dudley is saying, if I may be so bold, is that these people were captured as enemy combatants caught perpetrating acts of War against the United States and/or US interests and should be held until hostilities cease.

If you feel they were unjustly detained argue that they deserve a hearing before a Military Tribunal to determine their status. Once established as enemy combatants, according to Dudley they may then be estranged from their compatriots until such time they can be returned when they can do no further harm or abet in the commission of that harm.

Just out Bush signed an Executive Order to ban cruel and inhumane treatment of these prisoners.

Posted by: rockville [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 20, 2007 02:10 PM

DM,

He must be one of yours.

Posted by: rockville [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 20, 2007 04:31 PM

rockville,
I hope he is not one of ours. But hey, you have Murtha, Kennedy, Schumer, Dean, Kerry, Gore, Moore, Streisand, Carter, Cruise, Heinz, more Kennedys, NYT, WaPo, Cnn, AlQueda, OBL, kblack, CO,.....

So maybe one foul mouth illiterate is not so bad. At least DM is trying to correct him. On the other hand he might likely be a plant, like the lawyer in Chicago claiming to be an ex Republican attending a trial lawyer convention! If it looks, walks and quacks like a duck, it is likely a duck.

Or, birds of a feather flock together. Congratulations on a new comrade.

Posted by: SEW at July 20, 2007 04:49 PM

Matt,
This "Rick" fellow needs to be banned. I smell a fake; no one is THAT stupid. And if he's for real ... damn!

Posted by: Dasein Libsbane [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 20, 2007 05:37 PM

rockville,
That seems redundant; inhumane is cruel, do we mean "inhuman"? Didn't Bush sign such a bill in 2005?

It also seems a no-brainer; from all accounts their treatment at Gitmo is humane and anything but cruel.

Posted by: Dasein Libsbane [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 20, 2007 05:51 PM

I was just reporting the facts provided by Fox News. You can view it word for word. It isn't something I would make-up.

Posted by: rockville [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 20, 2007 07:50 PM

Only the determinedly gullible could view Rick4bush as anything but a plant, and a very clumsy one at that. Not one conservative I have ever met, or seen post on any of the sites I visit, has ever talked like that. But that hatred and negativity had to come from somewhere, and I'm betting it is just more of that lovely Liberal loathing thinly disguised as a conservative rant.

Leo, I've always admired your intelligence and knowledge but never knew you were so funny. I've been saying what your letter says for years, but not nearly so eloquently or so effectively.

Thank you...
