Tip of The Iceberg: Jefferson To Be Indicted

After what can only be described as a ridiculous long and drawn out investigation, William "Cold Cash" Jefferson appears to be on the verge of an indictment.

This should come as no surprise to people familiar with the case. And those of you who have read our book, Caucus of Corruption, know very well that William Jefferson is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to corruption in the Democratic Party.

Does this indictment signal the end of the Democrats' campaign against corruption? Remember, this is the same Jefferson who was nearly put on the Homeland Security committee after the 2006 elections despite the ongoing investigation against him. Are we by chance on the verge of a new era of accountability for the Democrats?

We can do more than hope. or those you who haven't bought a copy yet, you can buy Caucus of Corruption at Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, and the Conservative Book Club.

Let's make sure that William Jefferson is not the last Democrat to be held accountable for corruption.

UPDATE: Indictment returned.

The charges include racketeering, solicitation of bribes, honest services wire fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, violating the foreign corrupt practices act, and conspiracy. The indictment relates to a bribery scheme for him and his family and his bribing a Nigerian official.

The indictment is 94 pages. If convicted on all charges Jefferson would be sentenced to 235 years in prison.

UPDATE: Compare and contrast Nancy Pelosi's reactions to Tom DeLay's indictment in 2005, to William Jefferson's indictment today.

Why don't you ever make a suggestion like "Let's hope Jefferson is not the last MEMBER OF CONGRESS to be held accountable for corruption". Why does it have to be a Democrat? Shouldn't we hold accountable ALL who break the law? Because there are still tons of corrupt Republicans in office as well as Dems. They ALL need to be weeded out, not just the Democrats.

"They ALL need to be weeded out, not just the Democrats."

we all agree on that. but isn't it obvious democrats haven't given a damn about corrupt members of their own party. the chickens are finally coming home to roost!

Posted by: KCJ at June 4, 2007 02:01 PM

And the difference is that Democrats CONDEMN the criminals within their party (has ANYONE come out in defense of Jefferson or said that the crimes he committed weren't serious?). Republicans always seem to EMBRACE and DEFEND their criminals (DeLay, Libby, etc, etc- heck, Drudge even defended FOLEY by saying the pages were 'asking for it'!?!?!?)

I say we get ALL the felons out of government, not just the ones from the opposing party!

Posted by: coulterfan [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 4, 2007 02:21 PM

Mark: Let's make sure that William Jefferson is not the last Democrat to be held accountable for corruption.

Somehow I don't think we have to worry about that. Although as "stewing chickens" go, I know of no Dems currently even being investigated by the FBI, much less under a cloud of possible indictment.

Meanwhile though, things aren't looking too good on the other side of the aisle. Your own governor Gibbons is having his problems with the FBI, as are Reps Lewis, Doolittle, and (Gary) Miller (all from CA, sadly), along with Sen Stevens (AK).

I'm not saying any of those guys are guilty. I hope they aren't. But I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit skeptical. Anyway, extrapolating forward 18 months or so, and folding in the fact that neither the Cunningham or Abramoff investigations have completely blown over, I'm guessing the GOP is going to have its hands full once again on the corruption front. And personally, I think the GOP needs to get out in front of it. They need to apply a full-court press on ethics issues. They should have done that in 2006, but they dragged their heels. Now is the time, IMO.

I guess a standing ovation for a true pedophile (one who actually had sex with a minor) in the person of Congressman Stubbs(D) is what passes for democrat 'condemnation' of their own.

Posted by: Bacon-I Will Miss Thee [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 4, 2007 04:36 PM

coulterfan - correct. Demorats condemn and Republicans force you to resign positions of authority. Most resign from Congress in disgrace.

Thanks for pointing out that difference.

Kahn-

Some resign and then the next day go to jail, like Bob "hairpiece" Ney

Posted by: babyeatingliberal [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 4, 2007 04:52 PM

Imagine my surprise. ONE Democratic Congressman gets indicted (and, it appears, rightfully so) and the whole Democratic congress is deemed corrupt.

But the previous GOP Congress? With Randy Cunningham, Bob Ney, Tom DeLay, Jerry "Fingers" Lewis, et al? Oh, they were all railroaded, the poor guys. Nope, no "Caucus of Corruption" on the right! Keep moving! Nothing to see here!

Hypocrites.

"Hypocrites."

Its funny how you guys dont even condemn the guy, but instead just say "you guys too! waaaaah"

Posted by: jbiccum [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 4, 2007 05:30 PM

jbiccum, proving once again the adage that "Righties Can't Read":

"Its funny how you guys dont even condemn the guy, but instead just say "you guys too! waaaaah"

Hey, dummy, did you even READ my post? I said, pretty plainly (it was only a few lines long) that he appeared to be rightfully convicted.

Remember: Democrats decry corruption. Republicans defend it (and blame the media). That's one of the crucial differences between us.

Yes, the democrats decry corruption. Of course they also accept as perfectly normal a congressman having 90 large sharing space with Freezy-Popsİ and ice trays, so take the word "decry" with a grain of salt.

Nothing to see here, move along, everyday Americans stash stacks of hundos in their freezers too, ya know.

Cyberactor: Remember: Democrats decry corruption. Republicans defend it (and blame the media). That's one of the crucial differences between us.

Recent evidence indicates that it would be inaccurate to construe the situation as one where... "Democrats decry corruption. Republicans defend it..." Rather, it appears to be more like "the party out of power decries corruption. The party in power defends it." And that has to stop. In that respect the ball is now, more than ever in the last decade, in the GOP's court. What are they going to do about it? What are we, as the electorate, going to do about it? Matt and Mark, as authorities on corruption... what do you suggest? You guys have readily acknowledged that corruption exists in both parties. How do we root out the scumbags from both?

Posted by: Ricorun [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 4, 2007 06:17 PM

If you repeat this often enough, Cyberactress, maybe you will believe it. What a joke.

good riddnece to bad rubbish.

teenlisper, I looked up "riddnece" in the dictionary--it wasn't in there. I then looked up "rubbish," and it said "see any of teenlisper's posts."

Jefferson insists he's innocent of all charges. Pay no attention to those videos; that cash was in that freezer accruing interest. Innocent until proven guilty.

Hey, where's all the boneheads, claiming "wag the dog?" Where are ya, kblockhead?

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 4, 2007 06:21 PM

Rico,
I agree. It's time to put a stop to corruption from members of both parties. This isn't a democrat or republican problem, it's an American problem.

Posted by: Casper [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 4, 2007 06:52 PM

What's so pathetic is that if he was a republican, he would have been indicted over a year ago and forced to step down well before that. I am sure chris matthews is gonna discuss this corruption 24/7 now. Not.

Posted by: james allegro at June 4, 2007 09:08 PM

Send him to jail where he belongs. You were a member of a very select and trusted group and you abused your position. I have no simpathy for you. Please New Orleans elect someone who can do something for you.

Posted by: Plainjane at June 4, 2007 10:09 PM

James Allegro-

Indicted over a year ago by whom? You do realize that the Attorney General (though incompetent) is a loyal Republican. As are the US attorneys who were all appointed by Bush.

Actually, when Carol Lam was replaced it was thought that the decision was made to slow down the Duke Cunningham investigation. She was on the brink of widening the probe to include more Republicans in Congress, when she got the axe!

Posted by: kritter at June 4, 2007 10:18 PM

Some resign and then the next day go to jail, like Bob "hairpiece" Ney

He resigned the day he was convicted, babypoop. Maybe Jefferson won't have to resign; his trial will probably stretch out past the next election.

The DemocRAT leadership should vote his corrupt ass out. Remember, Speaker of State Piglosi promised the most ethical Congress ever. Then again, she does have skeletons of her own to deal with, hmmm?

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 5, 2007 05:07 AM

As usual, idiots like Keefer have to make this a Dem vs. Repub issue, although it clearly is not.

Do you not have even a shred of dignity? You blame the Dems for protecting their corrupt politicians, yet history has shown us no one has done that more then the Republicans.

Jefferson will get exactly what he deserves hopefully. And I'm pretty sure they aren't going to bring in his party affiliation in the criminal investigation, so why should we?

A criminal is a criminal, whether he's black or white, Democrat or Republican, man or woman. They should ALL be punished; not just the ones we don't like.

Try to grow up and represent even a somewhat mature stance on things Keefer, just give it a try.
