CBS' Les Moonves Explains Why CBS News is Dying

Mostly because CBS is run by a rather obtuse man:

Leslie Moonves, CBS chief executive, on Tuesday suggested that sexist attitudes were partly to blame for the faltering performance of Katie Couric, the news anchor he recruited to the network with a $15m annual pay package.

“I’m sort of surprised by the vitriol against her. The number of people who don’t want news from a woman was startling,” Mr Moonves said of the audience’s reaction to Ms Couric, who this month brought ratings for the CBS Evening News to a 20-year low.

Uh, Les, just perhaps it is a matter of "fake but accurate" taking a huge bite out of CBS credibility - and then top that off with putting a partisan hack on as anchor and voila!, you've got no one who wants to watch your show...$15 million per year for someone to read a tele-prompter is also, well, being a bit overpaid given the skill level involved...

Just a thought...

If, as he says, viewers don't want news from women, how does he explain the success of Fox News with as many women as they have reporting the News?

Posted by: Lew Waters [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 03:50 AM

Les is a typical liberal. Rather then discuss the actual causes of their decline, such as what Mark mentioned, he tries to change the tone of the debate by going down Bigot Lane.

And, Lew, have you noticed that CNN, which has always had lots of women, are bringing in even more, particularly very attractive ones, lately? Probably taking the same road that Fox is.

Posted by: William Teach [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 07:50 AM

So Les is blaming everyone else for his problem? Sounds about right.

BTW, I could listen to Harris Faulkner all day long.

Posted by: neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 09:25 AM

I don't watch msm tv "news".

man or woman makes no diff.

Posted by: OhioOrrin at June 13, 2007 09:49 AM

CBS should try having Ann Coulter read the news.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 10:04 AM

Yeah because it sure wouldn't be biased as hell then Kahn.

I love how you people always claim that the MSM is anti-Bush and biased, yet can never muster up a single shred of evidence to support that claim. God forbid they read the news of bombings in Iraq! Crazy! Insane! Terrorism! Hot dogs! 911!

No mention of O'Reilly insulting the US troops and and their families last night though huh Mark?

Posted by: Colin [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 12:39 PM

And, at the risk of sounding sexist, Lew, mighty fine looking women. Even Katie is physically attractive. It's what's between her ears that's lacking.

Posted by: Retired Spook [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 12:52 PM

Colin - its biased NOW. Don't be mad if I'd like to see the polarity change. Remember - CBS attacked the president two weeks before the election with obviously forged documents. Point to an example of Fox doing something as bad - really. At least Ann Coulter is smart.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 12:55 PM

Mark,
I've lost track, which number of "What Media Bias" are we up to now? Maybe colon hasn't read them yet.

Posted by: Rathaven [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 01:54 PM

Kahn,

Don't forget that Fox reported that Osama Obama attended a Madrassa. I forget; did they later use the "fake but accurate" excuse?

and Coulter is very smart; have you read her bio? Impressive creds!

Posted by: Rathaven [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 01:58 PM

I don't watch the dinosaur media either, but, if I did, a 'perky' newsreader wouldn't be my choice.

Posted by: LaMano [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 02:19 PM

Herr Moonbat - I mean Moonves - has openly declared that CBS has NO INTENTION of doing anything to restore its credibility, so he takes the easy way out and blames the public instead. Even if he tried with all his heart, it would take years to undo the damage that's been done already.

Posted by: Bloodthirsty Warmonger at June 13, 2007 02:50 PM

obama madrassa - a mistake they acknowleded and appologized for quickly. AND - It wasn't with forged documents on a news magazine two weeks before the election. Nope, a mistake is not the same as a deliberate deception my friend. Or - is that confusing you? Is THAT why you guys say Bush lied, because you aren't very good at vocabulary?

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 03:18 PM

Kahn,
Obviously you’ve confused me with a liberal; the Obama Madrassa story started when Fox News reported that Insight Magazine reported the Hillary-Obama connection; lost in the “news” of Fox reporting the Madrassa story was the truth of the original story; Insight reported that Hillary was planning on using the Madrassa story to discredit Obama.

As to my vocabulary~ I don’t think “vocabulary” is in my vocabulary; I prefer the monosyllabic "words".

Posted by: Rathaven [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 04:00 PM

mark, i have to agree, couric is an intellectual lightweight more appropriately disposed to daytime laundry-talk. that said, she has HARDLY taken a liberal tack in her reporting. in fact, her ridiculous (now defunct) 'free speech' segment skewed heavily to the right with guests such as rush f*cking limbaugh, rudy guiliani, and the "flat earth nut job" from columbine.

when you give RUSH LIMBAUGH a platform on your broadcast, you're clearly pandering to the faux news base for cheap ratings.

Posted by: conscriptor [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 04:14 PM

Isn’t it nice when we can have these conversations with the free thinking, non-judgmental, progressives like conscriptor?

I didn’t see it, but wasn’t the “free speech” segment supposed to be opinion? How do you use the clearly labeled opinion section of the broadcast as evidence that her reporting isn’t biased? Or you just can't stand any divergent opinion?

"Faux News" the pun that only stupid people think is clever.

Posted by: Rathaven [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 04:48 PM

Harris Faulkner? Doesn't she have the most incredibly beautiful eyes on TV? And a winner of six Emmy Awards! Did you ever hear her give a motivational speech? Breathtaking!

Posted by: Rathaven [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 05:12 PM

so by your deeply-flawed logic, providing a platform to express one's opinions for an audience of millions does not in any way imply a bias? why the do you think Fox News, the WSJ, the Post, and the Sun are considered conservative and the Times liberal? it's because of WHO they CHOOSE to populate the op-ed pages or (anchor TV shows).

i could claim to objectively present the news all day long, but if i only chose progressive or rightwing guest speakers, would you not label me biased?

Posted by: conscriptor [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 05:13 PM

WSJ; "considered" conservative on the editorial pages/liberal in news reporting. There goes your theory.

AND, according to a study by UCLA, Brit Hume (Fox News) is the closest to middle-of-the-road of all news analysis programs. But, the editorial content in the "Opinion" section of the LA Times also included conservative columnists; does this mean the LA Times is Conservative in their news reporting because Jonah Goldberg writes op-eds? Flawed logic, indeed!

Posted by: Rathaven [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 05:36 PM

I had no idea Harris even gave motivational speeches, but would be motivated to attend one. Can I get a backstage pass?

Posted by: neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 05:40 PM

WSJ - newspages liberal? ok, i'll take that. most business readers, academia, and general interest readers would score the WSJ as the most objective, most respected, best reporting newspaper in the business, if not the world (save for the FT perhaps). i guess i can understand why you might then consider the news pages 'liberal'... ;)

brit hume toes the administration's line. calling him middle-of-the-road seems to me (at least) a bit of a stretch.

Posted by: conscriptor [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 06:38 PM

Rathaven - what are you a proofreader? How much does that pay?

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 08:21 PM

conscriptor - rathaven is correct. UCLA says that, not just us. Humes show is good - you should try watching once or twice.

Afraid I haven't actually read the WSJ in some time.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 13, 2007 08:25 PM

if Couric is being discriminated against(as a woman) ... then explain Oprah, and the many other successful women in the media and entertainment business, eg barbara walters, maureen dowd.

Hey leftist, is ur head up ur ass??? Of course MSM is biased, they might as well put "Bush: Evil, Homosexuals: Righteous" as a headline, and wtf is wrong w/ Bill Orielly??? Yes he is a flawed man but he tells the truth unlike ur precious NYT, oh yeah but i knw how much u pigs on the left hate the truth.
