Race to the Border

Its not too often we see a clever use of government funds, so it is with pleasure that I state that this meets my full approval:

The U.S. Border Patrol, seeking to recruit 6,000 new agents by the end of 2008, has emblazoned its name on a NASCAR Busch Series car in an attempt to rev up its ambitious hiring plan.

The agency is teaming with Jay Robinson Racing for a 25-race sponsorship of the No. 28 Chevrolet that will run through the remainder of the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series season. The green-and-white Border Patrol vehicle made its debut May 11 at the Darlington Raceway in South Carolina during the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 -- won by Denny Hamlin in a Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet. The Border Patrol-sponsored car finished 25th out of 43.

The NASCAR vehicle represents "what CBP Border Patrol is attempting to do with its hiring and recruiting efforts; it is fast, diligent and precise," U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said. "This partnership is exactly what we needed to rev our recruiting and hiring into high gear."

The deal cost the agency $975,000, spokesman Bill Anthony said, adding that CBP is competing with NASCAR vehicles sponsored by the U.S. Army, Navy and Marines Corps in what has proven to be a successful recruiting tool.

That is going where the recruits are - we're not going to get too many border patrol recruits out of sponsoring a foreign film festival or a Barbara Streisand concert series; this is exactly where we need to be - among people who care about the issue and are likely to be willing to do something about it.

one would hope that everyone can agree to secure our borders.

yet, knowing the govt, erecting a border fence could easily become a predictable boondoogle requiring re-re-funding & loaded w unrelated pork like studing the mating habits of brine shrimp.

lets maybe adopt a psy-ops strategy like erecting cheap "land mine" warning signs in spanish, without the land mines of course. then we could occasionally (safely) controlled-detonate explosive simulators for the sound effect.

the mules & illegals wouldn't know the diff & it would scare the burritos outta 'em.

comprende?

I'm not a big proponent of a Military Draft, but I wouldn't mind seeing a draft where young men were obligated to spend 2 years with the Border Patrol serving their country.

I don't know if I'd want to join the border patrol with the restrictive rules of engagement they've been operating under. Apparently, there's no such thing as a legal justification for shooting an illegal alien, caught red-handed smuggling drugs, who refuses to submit to arrest.

bigfoot:

the army rules of engagement(ROE) forbade using a .50 cal to shoot at enemy personnel. so we just shot at their rifles instead.

now apply that to illegal alien drug runners.

I agree with you bigfoot, I'd be too scared that I'd have the ACLU up my ass in a heartbeat if I were to resort to forceful submission on an illegal. Lew- I'll one up you, I wouldn't mind if we had a mandatory military program, not just border patrol. Arent a few countries that have such a program? China, Japan?..I'm guessing.

Green and White race car? Add a splash of red and we have the color of the Mexican flag.

I agree with Lew, national service should be implemented wherein the youth should be compelled to help for two years in border patrol, disaster aid, community policing and or one year of active military service. It would serve both our nation and the youth of this great nation enormously.

Why a border patrol, 30 million illegals are here already, we are about to give them a free pass to stay. HomeLand Security is and will become another government spending porker.

As for ROE, thats one reason we will not make any headway in Iraq. Read one of Michael Yon's post on his web site, ROE is an absolute joke.

Term Limits Vince Flynn style, we need it and need it now.

Well I think we can forget about "running our country as WE want", since today, the "Amnesty Bill" got worked out. THIS IS AMNESTY FOR ALL THE ILLEGALS WHO WANT TO COME INTO AMERICA AND DRAIN OUR COUNTRY DRY. THIS, is something that the Pelosi, Kennedy, etc. crowd wanted all along, as they know it will add votes to their pandering.
I am so disgusted with my GOP party, I could scream, and I blame Bush, for NOT PUTTING INTO EFFECT, THE PERSONELL ON THE BORDERS, AND THE AGENCY, ALONG WITH POLICE, TO SEND THESE LAWBREAKERS BACK WHERE THEY CAME FROM. TO CALL THIS ANYTHING OTHER THAN AMNESTY, IS A TRAVISTY.
We are not safer, nor are we able to have laws already on the books abided by-as NO ONE, has said
anything about stopping this seive of illegal aliens(with little to NO education)Oh yeah, it's for the crops right? No IT ISN'T...Since the farmers are complaining that haven't enough help to pick crops rotting in the ground. So what does that mean? It means that "these poor lost souls, who only want to make a living doing the jobs that Americans don't want to do", AREN'T filling the farming jobs--they are in our offices,
cleaning, doing construction work, gardening, cleaning houses, etc. NOT PICKING CROPS FOLKS.
They too, think this is beneath them-so they are opting for the "better jobs", (that frankly our citizens on welfare should be doing-No Free Lunch)
You have to work if you are on welfare. This action today, is going to backlash on the GOP, and
they deserve it, IMO, as they not only let Mexico
dictate to them, they have let the Dems-who want this cheap labor and eventual votes-they hope.

This is disgusting, but our politicians don't care
what we think anyway-but I can say this: I will NOT be voting for the GOP next time around-they should have taken care of this from the beginning,
and now, they are being "told what to do, by the Donks, and the Rhino clan, and that's enough for me".

Why would the republican party turn its back on the men and women who put them in power? Any Republican who votes for the amnasty bill should be kicked out of the party. When 90% of the Republican base have said they oppose giving amnasty to the Illegals who in there right mind would vote for Amnasty??? It will serve the Republican party right to lose every seat in the house and senate over the next two election cycles. I will never vote for them again or give money to a party that stabed the American People in the back. This one vote will turn the republican base against the leadership. They had better get those Mexicans on the voter rolls quick "cause" they have lost the people who put them in office in the first place.
