Official Takes Case to U.S., but Skeptics Don’t Budge
From the NYT:
WASHINGTON, May 8-- Mowaffak al-Rubaie, the national security adviser to Iraq's prime minister, undertook on Tuesday what may have been his most challenging mission yet: trying to persuade American lawmakers who have all but run out of patience that still more patience is required.
In a whirlwind series of closed-door meetings that began with Representative John P. Murtha and ended with Senator Carl Levin--two Democrats who have been leading the charge for American troop withdrawal-¬¯ Mr. Rubaie sought to make the case that an American pullout would be catastrophic.
"I know that they are running out of patience, and I understand this very well," Mr. Rubaie said in a Monday interview in which he outlined his case. "And we have to play the political game. But I feel we are on the last mile of a walk toward success, and if they let go and don't take our hand, I feel that we are going to lose everything."¯
Bottom line: Victory in Iraq is not in the cards when you're a democrat.
Not when you've invested your very political fortunes on a platform of defeat.
The Official Democrat Slogan for OIF:
Victory. Must. Not. Happen!
But what if defeat means the deaths of untold thousands of civilians in a genocidal rage?
Still.. Victory. Must. Not. Happen!
But what if it means that Ahmadinejad will control Iraq's oil and fund global terrorism?
Still...Victory. Must. Not. Happen!
But...the Iraqi Government is working hard to achieve a successful outcome...All they're asking for is a little more time to make it happen!
Again, for the last time: Victory. Must. Not. Happen!
And for the last time--don't question our patriotism!

Democrats stand for the surrender and defeat of America in Iraq. Democrats are traitors. Democrats are Al Qaeda's best friends.

al-Rubiaie: But I feel we are on the last mile of a walk toward success...
A walk? A WALK??!! Do I need to add anything?
Okay maybe this... how long would you say your stroll has been so far?

If the US leaves, the Assyrian Christians are finished.
'Convert or Die' "The Assault on Assyrian Christians"
International Herald Tribune: A militant Islamic group in Iraq recently issued a fatwa, or religious edict, to the Assyrian Christian residents of the Baghdad suburb of Dora: Convert to Islam within 24 hours, or face death. At the same time, Muslim neighbors were instructed, over the loudspeakers of local mosques, to confiscate the property of Christians and enforce the edict.
The response was as swift: The majority of Assyrians remaining in Dora immediately gathered whatever they could carry and fled the city.
Iraq's Assyrian Christians know quite well that these latest threats are not empty promises. Since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, over 25 churches across Iraq have been bombed, in highly symbolic and coordinated manners. The Islamic group claiming responsibility for the bombing of four churches in August 2004 issued a warning. "To the people of the crosses: Return to your senses and be aware that God's soldiers are ready for you. You wanted a crusade and these are its results."
Several priests have been abducted and beheaded, one in apparent retribution for the pope's public musings about Muhammed and the nature of Islam in October 2006. In March, two elderly nuns were reportedly stabbed to death in Kirkuk. Several Christian women have been beheaded or doused with chemicals for failing to wear the veil. And last October a 14-year-old Assyrian boy was crucified near Mosul.
For the Islamists, the violence has certainly had the desired effect: The massive exodus of Assyrian Christians from Iraq. The UN High Commission for Refugees estimates that as many as a third of the 1.8 million refugees now outside Iraq are Christian.[..]
Assyrian Christians, the indigenous people of Iraq, the inheritors of the ancient Mesopotamian civilization and the world's earliest converts to Christianity, are at risk of being completely eradicated from their homeland.

The Democrat led Congress did the same thing to South Viet Nam in 1973, leading to their defeat and subjugation under a cruel and oppressive Communist regime in 1975. It wasn't only to 'get the Troops out,' they cut off all material and finacial support, while the Soviet Union and China resupplied and rebuilt the North Vietnamese Army we and the South Vietnamese decimated so dearly in Tet of '68.
Joseph P. Kennedy is quoted long ago with the phrase, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." His party today would reword it, "when the going gets tough, cut, run and whimper."

Lew, the new DemocRAT motto: "When the going gets tough, we'd better be going."
Or, "When the going gets tough, raise the minimum wage. That'll show the bad guys that we're serious..."

I don't know, Freedom1. The actions of the Dems bring to mind the AC/DC song "If you want Blood"
If you want blood, you got it
If you want blood, you got it
Blood on the streets
Blood on the rocks
Blood in the gutter
Every last drop
You want blood, you got it
Yes you have
Seems to be what the Dems are driving for in Iraq.

Well, it seems the Iraqi's want us out too. Wasn't that part of the deal? I seem to remember the president saying "when they ask us to leave, we will", or something to that effect.
Now the Iraqi parliament has voted for timetables, but what, we're still not leaving?

Oh, PM(S)--you're such a bother. Now run along, little fella.
William, a good AC/DC song for the likes of Pelosi and Feinstein these days would be "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap..."

How long would you prefer? 20 years? 30? The point I am trying to make is that strolling towards that goal is not a sustainable pace. But it doesn't surprise me at all that Mowaffak al-Rubaie would say such a thing. His faction is perfectly fine with a nice, leisurely pace. In the mean time, his faction continues to lose ground.
Yet, even he acknowledges that pressure could be better applied. From the NYT article Leo cited: American lawmakers, he said, could help the process along, not with deadlines, but by putting pressure on the various Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish factions as they struggle to hammer out their legislation. “Each piece of law,” he said, required the “need to twist some different arms.”
In an earlier thread a commenter (mdebde) cited an interesting, and I think a very important article about an emerging "nationalist" coalition in the Iraqi gov't that is approaching critical mass. I'm not inclined to buy into everything the authors say, but it does help to explain the unending string of contradictions emanating from Maliki and his comrades. And the most disturbing passage was this one: Iraqi nationalists have attempted again and again to forge relationships with members of Congress, the State Department, the Pentagon and the White House but have found little interest in dialogue and no support.
Obviously, the political situation in Iraq is far more complex than the simple talking points offered up by either Bush or the Dems imply. But solving the problem is essential. NO ONE -- except maybe you and a few others -- believes that "victory" can be achieved militarily. There has to be a political solution. And right now, the political solution is stalled.
I don't pretend to know the answers, but if these "nationalists" are growing in power to the point where they can actually put together a majority of votes, it seems to me that it might be time to at least talk to them.
