Taking Harry Reid to Task

This is going to have an affect on whether or not Reid even runs for re-election out here in Nevada in 2010 - from Charles Krauthammer on Fox News via NRO's The Corner:

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: This is a classic definition of a gaffe. The definition of a gaffe in Washington is when a politician accidentally says what's in his heart, because it's a rare occasion and obviously, the fact that Reid had to go out on the floor of the Senate and then restate it in a different way is an example of how he knew he'd made a gaffe.

He went out on the floor and said, no, I didn't say it was lost. In fact, he did. He not only said it was lost, but in that clip that we saw he said the secretary of state, secretary of defense know it's lost as well. Then he goes out on the floor and says, no, it's only lost if we follow the policy of the president. It's not if you follow mine.

Now, if you parse that, what he means is if we continue with the surge, which is a new strategy of counterinsurgency and a new way to approach the war, we are lost. But, if you do what I'm recommending, which is to abandon the war and to leave the field of battle . . . we're going to win. Now, this is so illogical that it's obvious that he's not sure what he wants to say, but he knows that admitting it's lost, as we said here earlier, is politically disastrous. Because American people have worries about the war, but saying it's lost is only a minority opinion and many people do not want what follows logically, which is abandoning the field of battle.

Keep in mind that Reid last ran for re-election in 2004, in a State which was trending GOP all year. During that year, Reid ran as an "independent for Nevada"...no mention of his membership in the Democratic party and he wasn't exactly out there, front and center, as Nevada's senior Democrat campaigning for other Democratic candidates in the State. It was because Reid had to run for re-election in Nevada (after winning his 1998 race by less than 500 votes) that he voted to ban partial-birth abortion and, of course, voted for the Iraq war resolution. It is clear now that Reid was either lying then, or he's lying now...in either case, we know for certain that Reid is a liar and can't be trusted; he certainly can't be trusted to reflect the values of his Nevada constituents, and that will be remembered.

As an aside, I'm more inclined to think he's actually lying now - as a son of Nevada, he (hopefully) can't be stupid enough to think that a few thousand ragged terrorists can defeat us. He knows the war isn't lost, but he's been entirely captured by the left to the point where, now, he's really no more than Nancy Pelosi's poodle. We don't have a Senate Majority Leader but a First Clerk of the Speaker of the House.

Mr. Bush and his incompetent administration lost the war and everyone knows it. Bush keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

General Pretaus knows the war is lost when he says there is no military solution to the situation.

It wasn't terrorists or insurgents the defeated it us. It was Bush's lack of leadership that doomed the Iraqi "liberation."

Harry Reid had the guts and honesty to state what we already know.

Keep up the Democrat bashing, it is only pushing up their approval ratings. The more you contrast Bush's stupidity against Democratic leadership the more popular the Dems become.

Keep it up!

Wade

Wade says: Keep up the Democrat bashing, it is only pushing up their approval ratings. The more you contrast Bush's stupidity against Democratic leadership the more popular the Dems become.

We'll see. Only time (and elections) will tell. I think that you and Reid are fooling yourselves to think that the majority of this great nation is rooting for defeat.

Posted by: DJ at April 20, 2007 02:44 PM

isn't reid the same person who was smiling right next to the president when he signed the patriot act, then declared "we've killed the patriot act!"?

this also the same person who voted for the war, and has said nothing but quagmire, can't win, return home, yada, yada, yada.

he's also the same person who voted for a ban on partial birth abortion, then says that it's horrible that it is upheld by the supreme court.

this is classic lib speak. and nobody in the drive-by media will call him on it. thank God we have the new media. the MSM prides itself on being the government (republican) watch dog. it's great that we now have the democrat watch dogs.

I doubt that there is one single human on this planet, aside from Wade himself, who would consider Wade to be capable of defining "competent". As Wade has no doubt learned, the only way to avoid making mistakes is to never attempt to do a darned thing---then you can sit on the sidelines and snipe at those who do because you have taken it upon yourself to first define success and failure and then to claim that everything that falls short of your definition of success is then a total and complete failure.

But there are those of us who know that no one ever attempts anything of value without making some missteps along the way----an insight reserved for those who do accomplish, and which is way above the comprehension of sluggards and slackers.

So historically literate people, as well as those who do strive for accomplishment and learn to take occasional failures in stride, understand that no war is a nice tidy linear predictable process. Just as politically literate people understand that no action related in any way to George W. Bush will ever be acceptable to the fever swamp BDS mouthbreathers who live just to post inane snotty irrelevant slams against him.

Changes such as those we are advancing in Iraq take decades to become consistently fruitful. This is far beyond the oh-so-limited attention span of the average radical Airhead, but those who actually know something about history, politics, and the world understand that it will be our children, and their children, who evaluate Iraq, not some knee-jerk radical Libs lurking on the Net to seek/invent out tidbits they can use to throw at the President, and at conservatives, in much the same way zoo chimps obtain the ammunition they hurl at onlookers.

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 20, 2007 03:14 PM

Fortunately there is an ever-widening gulf between radical Libs and mainstream Democrats, a rift which will only be increased as those who believed in the conservative disguise donned by Dems running in '06 come to realize they were deceived.

Some are more skillful at the tap-dance demanded of Democrats in the first decade of this century, as they try to appease the wild-eyed irrational Budding Socialist Left while at the same time desperately trying to hang on to the rational, patriotic, sincere mainstream party members they need to stay in power. Some, when they attempt this intricate dance, are more like pigs on ice----Harry Reid being the most obvious.

Now in Massachusetts, Harry could lie with total confidence that the D after his name is all he needs to be returned to Washington year after year. But Nevadans are a different kind of critter. They are not likely to like being lied to regarding the election and the way Reid presented himself, and are even less likely to tolerate his pathetic shape-shifting efforts as he tries, a la Hillary, to have it all ways at the same time.

And you have to have at least a tiny scintilla of charisma to get away with this. Harry is so lacking in charm and grace and appeal, he is the last person to try to pull off something like this. Harry's problem is that he isn't smart enough to even have a plan for trying to pull this off---he just says what he thinks he has to say at any given time, and hopes no one will remember (if he even does) what he said last time.

"Keep in mind that Reid last ran for re-election in 2004, in a State which was trending GOP all year."

Hey Mark

times a changin I don't know if you noticed with the 2006 elections but with the possible exception of Georgia the all the states in the union are trending democratic. You can thank your buddy Bush and his Iraq war for that

"Keep in mind that Reid last ran for re-election in 2004, in a State which was trending GOP all year."

Mark,

To build off of Amp's point, I quote Disco Stu from the Simpsons: "Did you know that disco record sales were up 400% for the year ending 1976? If these trends continue...ayyyyy!"

Trying to gauge Reid's election chances in 3 1/2 years is pointless. It is downright inane to gauge it based on 2004, with no consideration of what happened in 2006 or what may happen in 2008. But given Mark's "clairvoyance" in 2006, it will always be reassuring to hear his claims of electoral doom for Democrats.

Did you know that there is not one Rap artist album in the top ten this year?? There are plenty of reasons, but I'll donate mine:
1) Average decent Americans are tired of the vulgar lyrics--if you can call them lyrics.
2) There are plenty of other artists that actually create music that is fun to listen to.
3) There is a firestorm within our youth that is beginning to see rap for what it truly is....denograding trash.

Where am I going with this you ask?

People aren't as dumb as you liberals think they are and eventually, Dirty Harry will be as unpopular as rap has become to some, hence the demise of Reid's political career....we hope!

I will briefly repeat the truth.

If you support the troops, get them out of Iraq. If you support our troops then you will support removing them from a very dangerous situation, (Civil Wars are quite dangerous) and bring them home so that they can take care of their families.

If you do not support the troops, then by all means, remove the sole bread winner from many homes and send them to the Civil War in Iraq, by all means put them in the line of fire where they will be in serious danger.

What part of "The Citizens wants our troops home" Do you not understand???

Magnum Serpentine

Posted by: Magnum Serpentine at April 20, 2007 04:47 PM

Almiranta:

Intelligent people know that once you make a mistake it is foolish to repeat it. You learn from it. Bush keeps repeating the same mistake over and over.

Defining success and failure, eh? Bush continually lowers the bar of success and moves the goal posts closer and STILL FAILS!

Nothing that the Bush Administration has said or done regarding Iraq has turned out to even be remotely true or successful.

We keep hearing the same discredited nonsense. Cheney still insists there was a pre-war connection between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. We keep hearing that things are improving, that Iraq is stabalizing, that we are "turning" yet another corner. Up until June of last year at least we were hearing from Republicans (Santorum, Hoekstra) that WMD's had been found in Iraq.

As far as Reid is concerned, he has been pretty consistent in his views. He was against abortion before the election as he is now.

And as far as conservatives donning the Democratic mantra to win in 2006: If you speak of Jim Webb and John Tester, hey I want more just like them.

Thank Bush for turning "Republican" into a bad word.

I weep not for your sorry party or your national embarrassment "W" Bush.

The answer to this is simple:

RECALL REID!!!!

Here are the Nevada state statutes. ANY public official can be recalled.

Recall can even be on the next ballot.

WHY WAIT??? Just do it!!!

RECALL REID NOW!!!!

General Pretaus knows the war is lost when he says there is no military solution to the situation.

General "Pretaus?" Who the hell is General "Pretaus?"

Now, I'm going to attempt to spell his name correctly, at least phonetically. When General Patraeus stated that there was no military solution, he meant that the military alone wasn't going to solve the crisis, Wade. He meant that it was going to take military and political solutions, moron. And, the last time I checked, this was what was being attempted there.

I know I've convinced ol' Wade of nothing here--soon he'll be claiming that Patraeus(sp?) said we need to get out now...

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 20, 2007 05:25 PM

Harry Reid should resign. What he said and did was over the line even for the current dem party, I see no other result. He should resign.

Posted by: james allegro at April 20, 2007 05:28 PM

all right keifer, I will bite...

what is the grand plan for a political solution that addresses:
(1) sunni , shia sectarian violence
(2) kurdish independence movement
(3) rebuilding of the Iraqi government and infrastructure
(4) how to deal with the rise of political extremism leading to growth of terrorist organizations
(5) establishment of cohesive relations with neighboring countries

give me the plan. And not in broad general strokes that are so abstract that they are meaningless (ie. the Mark "support victory" mantra - which is equivalent to the tinkerbell solution of clapping our hands and hoping that what we are doing now will somehow start to magically work)...

You can bet when a person is looking for an accurate analysis of the occupation of Iraq, Charles Krauthammer's long list of being repeatedly wrong on Iraq makes him the first person you'd look to.

Or if you were in a constant state of denial about the realities of the policies you continue to support. One or the other.

If Bush had made the occasional ooops along the way, Almiranta, I don't think anyone here would hold that against him. However, this man's mistakes are monumental. He continues to blindly stagger into one debacle after another. He is the leader of the free world, for pete's sake, not some elementary school drop-out.

There should be, at the very least, some semblance of intelligent leadership shown from the number one country in the world. Does it not bother you at all, Almiranta, to know how little your President is respected around the world? You present yourself as a knowledgeable individual and yet you insist on supporting, without question, Bush and his failed policies. I really would like to know the reason.

CO,

Intelligent leadership? Like the leadership of Putin? Of Chirac? Of Chretien? Of Schroder? Or maybe you're thinking of the intelligence shown by Assad, Jr? Ahmadinejad? Maybe you have a hankering for Castro? For Chavez? How about Mugabe?

Oh, I know, you must be thinking of the intelligence of Abbas? Naw...maybe you think that Mubarak is the man? Hmmm...maybe we should set our sights a little lower? I know - you're thinking of the intelligent leadership of the Captains Regent of San Marino, Alessandro Mancini and Alessandro Rossi!

Yeah, if we had more men like the Captains Regent in charge, we'd have a better world...

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 20, 2007 07:22 PM

Mark, I would have thought the leader of the free world would be at the top of that list and not hovering near the bottom. Shouldn't the world be looking to him for guidance, shouldn't he be showing us all how a true democracy is suppose to operate? You know, be a beacon of light in this dark, dangerous world.

CO, this is the difference between Americans (the good, patriotic, red blooded ones) and Canadians (pretty much every single hoser north of the border). We Americans don't judge ourselves by what others may think.

See, unlike you Canadians who suffer from a gigantic (and I mean GIGANTIC) inferiority complex and define yourselves simply by how others think, we just try and do the right thing regardless.

I know this to be a fact. I lived in Canada for the first 26 years of my life. I still have a lot of family throughout the Great White North. I used to suffer from this derangement too. I used to ask questions (as I am sure you still do) like "why isn't hockey bigger in the States?" and "why aren't The Tragically Hip more popular in the States?". I used to buy those bogus UN propaganda "studies", that the Canadian government crams down your throats, that imply that Canada is the best place in the world to live. The degrees to which Canadians are concerned about what others think border on paranoia. I know boatloads (should I say canoe-loads) of people up there who are EXACTLY that way. Little secret for ya? The big maple leaf on your backpack doesn’t mean shite…

So scurry back to your little, dingy wasteland and leave us big boys to keep you safe. Just sit quietly on your hands and do nothing (lest the rest of the world not approve) and we’ll keep you safe from Islamic Terrorists. In your worldview we shouldn’t because the optics are bad. In our worldview we will simply because it is the right thing to do. Period.

Now, this is so illogical that it's obvious that he's not sure what he wants to say, but he knows that admitting it's lost, as we said here earlier, is politically disastrous.

Harry Reid is a TRAITOR to America. Behold America's enemies Harry-today's GWOT headlines (via LGF):

"Jihadist Video Shows BOY BEHEADING man"

KILI FAQIRAN, Pakistan - The boy with the knife looks barely 12. In a high-pitched voice, he denounces the bound, blindfolded man before him as an American spy. Then he hacks off the captive’s head to cries of “God is great!” and hoists it in triumph by the hair.

"Turkish Christians Tortured Before Murder": 'Slain Evangelists Were Tortured, says Turkish Doctor'

MALATYA, Turkey — Three Protestants murdered at a Christian publishing house in Malatya, Turkey, were tortured for three hours before their assailants slit their throats, a press report said Friday, quoting one of the doctors involved in the grisly case.

Dr. Murat Ugras, a spokesman for the Turgut Ozal Medical center, told the daily Hurriyet of hospital surgeons’ fruitless efforts to save Ugur Yuksel, one of the three victims of the massacre at the Zirve (summit) publishing house, which distributed Christian literature.

“He had scores of knife cuts on his thighs, his testicles, his rectum, and his back,” Ugras said. “His fingers were sliced to the bone. ”It is obvious that these wounds had been inflicted to torture him," he said.

"BELGIUM: Muslims Force Alcohol from the Menu"

Immigrant snackbar owners in Antwerp are cutting out alcohol from their menu more and more often, due to pressure from fundamentalist Muslims.

"Extremists go into the restaurants and point out to the owner that it is contrary to Islam to serve alcohol. They continue to do that until the owners yield," says Farid Hemdane, president for the district council of Borgerhout.

What's Harry Reid's plan to deal with America's enemies-in Iraq, in Pakistan, in Turkey?!?

Maybe not to you, GOP, but many Americans traveling abroad prefer to have a Canadian maple leaf on their backpack rather than old glory. Why do you think that is? Perhaps it would be a good idea for the U.S. to give a little thought as to how the world views them. You know, it is always nicer if the number of your friends can be greater than the number of your enemies.

An odd headline appeared in Al Jazeera yesterday, Iraq war ‘lost' says top Democrat

Apparently, the Middle East wasn't informed that Reid didn't really mean it.

Today, Reid says, "the longer we continue down the president's path the further we will be from responsibly ending this war." He repeated the sentiment two additional times in the speech and added, "but there is still a chance to change course and we must change course."

There are only two courses, win or lose.

Of course, we all know there will come a Political settlement in time, but there must first be a secure country, which is what were doing, except for the constant undermining and demoralizing of our Troops, not to forget the emboldening of the enemy by Democrats.

Reid also said, "We take a back seat to no one in supporting our troops. And we will never abandon our troops in a time of war."

We are still waiting on your good friend, Speaker of State, Queen Pelosi, to send a real spending bill to the President that supports the Troops.

Instead, the Troops are having to cut back under a "slow bleed" policy as Democrats stall funding. We also get Murtha suggesting a Two month Iraq spending bill.

Of course, we know what Reids real goal is, as he stated he plans to continue an aggressive push for an early withdrawal from Iraq and does not particularly care that Republicans will try to paint that position as a lack of support for U.S. forces.

Why? Because “We are going to pick up Senate seats as a result of this war."

Echoing that goal was Chuck Schumer who added, "The war in Iraq is a lead weight attached to their ankle. We will break them, because they are looking extinction in the eye."

What’s the Definition of Confident? Answer: Reid and Schumer

Posted by: Lew Waters [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 21, 2007 12:53 AM

Reid is so KERRYESQUE, shooting his mouth off for what truly is in his heart, then when the heat starts up, they "back peddle-trying to make people
think they said or meant something else"...These two in particular, are, and should be referred to
as "Treasonists"....during this time of war.

What do you think FDR would have done to the likes
of Reid, Kerry and the White Flag Bunch?

Posted by: Jo at April 21, 2007 01:02 AM

WVO - I USED to think a strong dollar was important. That before I took finance in college.

The low dollar means Europeans and Japanese and Americans spend their vacation money HERE. It means that Fords seem cheap compared to Volvos. It means that Dell is a better deal than seimans. It means that just about anybody is cheaper than Blaupunkt, Krepps, or Phiilips. Get the point?

The low dollar is a smart move. I hope it stays this way for awhile.

Again, I'd like to point out what should be obvious to everyone. The War in Afghanistan is an Afghani Civil War. The Taliban are Afghanis. The Karzai government is Afghani. Afghanis are fighting Afghanis.

In fact, Afghanistan was in the midst of a Civil War before the US declared war on it, three weeks after 9/11. The Afghanistan Northern Alliance was fighting a war against the Afghanistan Taliban. Today, the war in Afghanistan is between Afghanistan's Karzai government/US allies vs. the Afghanistan Taliban/Al Qaeda terrorists.

For those who want to run from Iraq on the basis that Iraq is in the midst of a Civil War, logic suggests that the same reasoning/course of action would also have to apply to Afghanistan's Civil War.

I saw a poll a few months ago that suggested that the majority of Canadians were already whining to declare defeat in Afghanistan and bring their troops home. So, Magnum Serpentine when do you want to declare defeat and surrender in Afghanistan's Civil War? Tell the truth.

Uh, we all understand that, because we all want them home. However, the majority of the citizens want them home victorious, unlike your side, who wants them home now, shamed, so's you DemocRATs can use them as election fodder.

kblack, aka Doctor Rerun:

As far as the plan, I don't know what it is, just as you don't. Since you don't, you are trained, by your great leaders, Reid-tard and Piglosi, to parrot the rhetoric that there is no plan. So I'm not going to speculate, and be an armchair quarterback.

I will say only one thing: I want Iraq to have a leader/government who does not harbor, support, or participate in terrorism. We don't need another Saddam Hussein, sitting on top of all that oil, training, planning, and financing yet another 9/11...
