Question Of The Day: Democrats and the Minimum Wage

When Democrats took control of congress, one their top priorities was to pass a "clean" minimum wage hike bill. They couldn't do it, so in order to guarantee passage of a bill that would not meet President Bush's veto, they agreed to couple the minimum wage hike with tax breaks for the the small businesses that the wage hike would hurt.

Now, considering passing the wage increase was one of their biggest priorities, why did the Democrats stick the minimum wage increase to the war spending bill that President Bush had long promised to veto?

Because Bush isn't going to veto it.

It's called politics. The Dems can say they did what they promised and Bush vetoed it. Just like the Repubs did with Kerry and the troop funding bill. Tie two things together and then accuse the other party of not voting for or vetoing (if that is a word) the popular item. Both parties play this game. You can't be so naive as you pretend.

Its all about politics and power to the Dems, they are using it as a means to create an anti-republican ad.

I can't wait to see the anti-dem ad quoting Queen Pelosi and her 100 hours failures.

Why not attach the wages on to the bill to fund his war. Why not make everyone happy and not just W who is sitting in his sandbox with all of his little toy soldiers.

it's all part of the Democrats plan to do anything to throw mud at the current Administration and make the President look bad. That's the point of every hearing, statement and action going on in the Congress. There's very little or no legislation being made. It'all "Get Bush so we can get the White House." Nothing else is going on.

Smith,

That's politics for ya!

Posted by: Eric [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2007 01:53 AM

Well, so much for rockville's pay raise this year. Guess you're gonna have to get by on $5.25/hr, rockhead. That kind of money doesn't go far in the PR of Montgomery County...

To use it as a political tool to drag Bush down further by casting him as the heartless rich former oil baron who refuses to help save the poor.

Why else?

This minimum wage nonsense is and always has been a political tool of the left that in reality hurts those its advocates say it will help the most.

Maybe its time for a Third political party.

The Republicans have destroyed our Constitution

The Democrats have sat there, afraid that if they do anything, they will ruin their chances to win the presidency in 2008.

Maybe we need a new Party... A Central party???

Keefer,

I am the small business and hire people. All of my employees make above the mininum wage, but it is clear that you are one of the kids that want to play in Bush's sandbox. He want let you in because you might want to change the course. It is funny that the republicans thing people just attacks the current administration, but the truth is...it has done nothing but lied and have convienent memory losses.

Bush only wants to do what is best for big business(Haliburton/war or tax cuts for people making greater then $125,000).

Does anyone other than me want to respond to rockville's post? This guy is one hell of a target!!

There is no way in hell that rockville owns anything other than a lemonade stand in front of mommy and daddy's house.

I have nothing to prove to you navydad and I am sure it is retired or (dishonorable)discharged.

I have served my country and know that not everyone is semi-intelligent to know what is best for the overall out come. My taxes are paid and I will continue to voice (type) my opinion.

Posted by: rockville [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2007 10:13 AM

rockville, the only thing you're proving is that you cannot think for yourself. The parroting liberal talking points have gone out of style like mullets...which I would assume you have??

navydad, his last post, to me, is unintelligible. Do you even know what he said? I can't figure it out.

rocky,

Are you in Rockville, MD? If so, are you hiring? I'm looking for new work, and want to work in the People's Republic of Montgomery County. All I ask is $25.00/hr, and a radio from 1200-1500 daily. I won't bring my politics to work, for fear of being beat up by lib commies. 'kay?

I think he's trying to say he's a taxpayer, he served in the military and that the lobotomy reversal has almost taken hold...but I wouldn't bet on it.

He might be that Steve guy from last year in disguise. Remember him? He lived in his parent's basement and was a self-proclaimed illiterate and pot head, kinda like the elephant man..only dumb. At least Joe Merrick was somewhat intelligent.

But then again, I can't be sure anymore since they all sound the same.

In the richest industrialized nation in the world, 37 million Americans–one in eight citizens–live below the official poverty line (just $19,971 income for a family of four); in 2005, more than 90 million Americans had incomes below 200 percent of the poverty threshold (less than $40,000 for a family of four); the United States ranks 24th out of 25 developed nations in the share of the population with an income below 50 percent of the national median income–and the US is dead last among 24 rich nations when the same measurement is used to assess child poverty.

I hate the Welfare for the Rich programs the Republicans favor. Our economy is based on the Middle Class, not the top 1%. We need to lift the poor to Middle Class status to make our nation better.
