House Republicans Pledge to Sustain Presidential Veto on Pork-Laden War Spending Bill

The letter:

March 29, 2007

The President
The White House
Washington, DC 20006

Dear Mr. President,

We are greatly concerned about the extraneous and excessive non-security related funds contained within the Global War on Terror supplemental spending bill currently under consideration in the Congress. If you choose to veto this measure over this spending, we will vote to sustain your veto.

#####

Republican Leader Boehner also issued the following statement:
"If Democrats insist on sending the White House a bloated war spending measure loaded with billions in pork, House Republicans will sustain the President's veto. This letter sends a strong message that Republicans will continue to fight for a clean troop funding bill, without tying funding for our generals and our troops to arbitrary restrictions or pork-barrel projects. American troops deserve a clean bill without extraneous and unnecessary spending and free of strings that undermine their mission.

"Speaker Pelosi pledged to bring-up a clean funding bill for the troops if their 'pork and retreat' strategy failed. Together with the President's veto pledge, this letter should make it clear to Democrats that their strategy has, in fact, failed. The path Democrats have chosen is clearly a dead end - an exercise in partisan futility that puts both American troops and their mission in jeopardy. It's time to do the right thing. Further delay is, in and of itself, just another 'slow bleed' strategy to force an American retreat."

There was an election a year ago that removed Representative Boehner from the majority party.
He is the MINORITY leader.

Dear War Pigs,

It was very insensitive to load the War Spending Bill with pork. Please believe me when I say the term "pork" was in no way ment to hurt your feelings, or demean you as a group. So please, hold your snouts up high, and grunt with pride!

Posted by: mike h at April 2, 2007 12:41 PM

So pull the f**king trigger, then. If the President wants to veto this bill, which fully funds our troops, so be it. If he thinks that Katrina aid is 'pork', that's fine. He should go ahead and veto when it hits his desk.

Stop threatening to veto, stop getting lickspittle Republican Congressmen to write letters pledging to uphold the veto. Just do it, already. Be a man, and veto this bill if its so bad.

Posted by: steveGA at April 2, 2007 12:50 PM

steveGA:

I think he WILL veto it. His only other veto (and he had PLENTY of chances to veto PLENTY of Republican pork in the last 6 years, but he refused to.) was for the stem cell research funding bill. Thus, with one swipe of the pen, he destroyed what little hope millions of dying people had left.

With this veto, he will again destroy the hopes of all our wounded and extremely tired troops in Iraq. He will destroy any chance they had of ever seeing their families and friends again. Sadly, Bush probably chuckles at the thought of such immense power over innocent's lives.

The man just likes to see good people suffer. He thoughroughly enjoys it. He revels in it.

Wow - I am the only intelligent opine as of today.

Hey Mike and Steve - move to France you coward A$$holes!

Give the troops what they need to fight and win!

Posted by: 1ToughHeb at April 2, 2007 04:26 PM

SteveGA, how can it be vetoed before it gets to the Presidents desk?

Why does the bill have to contain all the pork spending on it? Why can't it stand on its own? Why does it have to add an artificial timeline when never before in the history of the world did a country ever set a timeline on war? The threat of the veto is to make sure the people know where the problem lies with this bogus bill. It is letting the people know that the Democrats are doing all they can to ensure defeat and give aid to our enemies.

Posted by: Ol' Goat [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 2, 2007 06:14 PM

Why does it have to add an artificial timeline when never before in the history of the world did a country ever set a timeline on war?

Because, despite the Constitution and all that, Speaker Piglosi and Majority Leader Reid-tard think they can micromanage the war. And they have their kook base believing the same, because their kook base can't even spell "Constitution," much less read and comprehend it.

Ol' Goat, the DemocRATs own defeat, and they must have it, or they're finished. They don't care who dies, in their quest for power.

Posted by: keefer at April 2, 2007 06:31 PM

Remember this one, keefer?

"Stop throwing the Constitution in my face," Bush screamed back. "It's just a goddamned piece of paper!"

Posted by: Canadian Observer [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 2, 2007 06:58 PM

It is the Republican's war and funding it should be a Republican problem. If Republicans want the money for our troops and to rebuild Iraq for the umpteen time they have it in their power to make it happen. Democrats have acted to make the money available. Republicans should tell the President to sign the bill and quit playing politics with the lives of our troops. There was an election and 70% think the President's work in Iraq is filled with incompetence. If it were not for the troops Democrats would not be giving Bush another dime for this Iraqi war folly.

As smart as Rove is I am sure he will find a way to weasel out of the benchmarks. By the time the withdrawal date benchmark comes around another 1000 Americans and countless Iraqi's will have been sacrificed.

Posted by: Josh Keaton at April 2, 2007 07:48 PM

Wow, you really got me there, CO. BTW, were any of those three so-called witnesses ever named?

Just curious. If he made the remark, so be it. Maybe he was angry because the DemocRATs are constantly treating it as such--a piece of paper. Also, it has nothing to do with the fact that Piglosi and Reid-tard have no Constitutional authority to be CIC. They can fund or defund, but they can't order deployments or redeployments. Capice?

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 2, 2007 08:04 PM

Thus, with one swipe of the pen, he destroyed what little hope millions of dying people had left.

Yeah, and Christopher Reeve would have walked again if Kerry had been elected President. I'd love to chalk it up to hyperbole, CLNW, but that would be giving your level of intelligence waaaaaay to much credit. What an intellectual cretin!!

Posted by: Retired Spook [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 2, 2007 08:07 PM

Ol' Goat,

In 1993 the Senate voted to end funding and end our military involvement in Somalia. I guess 1993 was before the "history of the world" started, huh?

Posted by: steveGA at April 2, 2007 08:28 PM

Uh oh, this might even make Drudge:

"Victor Gold, a friend of George H.W. Bush and the Cheney family, will release a book slamming the Bush administration entitled, "Invasion of the Party Snatchers: How the Holy-Rollers and the Neo-Cons Destroyed the GOP."

"For all the Rove-built facade of his being a 'strong' chief executive, George W. Bush has been, by comparison to even hapless Jimmy Carter, the weakest, most out of touch president in modern times," Gold writes. "Think Dan Quayle in cowboy boots."

Posted by: carsick [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 2, 2007 10:36 PM

SteveGA said: "In 1993 the Senate voted to end funding and end our military involvement in Somalia. I guess 1993 was before the "history of the world" started, huh?"

When exactly were we at war in Somalia? I don't recall that war.

To go back to the Canadian Observer's supposed quote of Bush, the report on it didn't name any names and it never was widely reported. Gee, I wonder why? Maybe because it was hearsay with no proof?

As to weaseling out of the benchmarks, the Commander in Chief is the one who gets to set those, anything else is just BS because they don't have the power to do that. The ONLY thing setting timelines does is aid the enemy, or do you think that the terrorists we are fighting don't read our news? If that was the case, then why do they all sound as if they could be in the DNC? The enemy of the USA hit every talking point of the Democrats. Doesn't that frighten you in the least little bit? Doesn't it give you at least a little pause in your thinking to wonder why THEY would agree with the liberals?

"Victor Gold, a friend of George H.W. Bush and the Cheney family, will release a book slamming the Bush administration entitled, "Invasion of the Party Snatchers: How the Holy-Rollers and the Neo-Cons Destroyed the GOP."

Bet it will sell about 10 copies.

Posted by: Ol' Goat [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 3, 2007 01:06 AM

Yeah, 10 copies, sure. Just like the dozens of other anti-Bush, war lie exposing books that sit, unread and unremarked upon. Because there's nothing book publishers like more than printing books that no one will read.

To The Democrats

All you democrats think you know what is right? Then come up with a plan that doesn't include a back door bailing out the Spinach, Salmon, or any other Industry in California via Pelosi, then try to attach it to a War Bill. Come up with a real plan that doesn't require us to be in more danger by GIVING UP".
Why do you all forget that Saddam Huessin wasn't cooperating with UN Investigators, and was not letting them see what weapons he had. Sorry if the Republicans (and most of the Democrats at the time I might add) thought he was actually HIDING something!!! We gave him numerous chances to let the inspectors in, and he refused THAT is why we went to IRAQ!!! Everyone agreed when we went but decided to change their minds, when all we found was that he was murdering his own people, but there were no weapons!!! REMEMBER that this happened only a few months after 911, we were ALL scared, and when someone from that region starts refusing access! We ALL got nervous. ADMIT IT! Now you are all putting our troops at risk by actually wanting a "WAR PLAN"... there are no "WAR PLANS" it is a WAR people!!! Should we tell the enemy, "ok we will be out on Aug. 1st, and then you can do what you want?" Does that even make sense to ANYONE OUT THERE? You don't tell the enemy your plan!

Support our Country, Our President and most importantly OUR TROOPS!!!

Remember too that Nothing has happened in the US since 911,
except for bad weather ie...Katrina, Global Warming etc... Oh Yeah, the Democrats Blame Bush for that too don't they... They are never happy! They are trouble making cry babies!!! Look at their conduct since they won the 2006 election:
"We are working on a Non-Binding Resolution", what is that? A waste of time, and our Tax Payers money!! If it is Non-Binding what is it for then?
American wasn't founded by Losers! We fight till we Win!!! That is what makes us different!!!

Look at what happened to Vietnam! We could have won but no. The media got involved, and no one supported our troops! Causing Low Moral, Politicians got involved with their "Opinions", and Finally we were forced to pull out! History will LOVE Bush! Wait and see. He is a man of conviction, and charactor. He doesn't change his mind regardless of Politics. Democrats should aspire to stick to their convictions and not change their minds daily to be popular.
This isn't a Popularity contest it is WAR!!!!! Get it through your heads that tough decisions will have to be made.

When someone JOINS the Military they do so knowing that they may have to give up their lives to protect ours! (and remember that the Republicans don't support a draft the Democrats do) That is their sacrifice. It is theirs to make. Honor it instead of Shaming it! I don't think WWI or WWII were popular at the time, but where would we be if we didn't finish our job then?
THINK ABOUT IT!

And another thing! The reason we won WWI and WWII is we
showed the world a UNITED COUNTRY! Women took over the mens jobs here in the states, and even the children were involved! there weren't ANTI-WAR Rallies, and marches!
The ENEMY LOVES seeing that we are not
supporting our troops and that the country is divided.
LETS UNITE AND
DEFEAT THEM!!!
You want to get out of IRAQ, I am sure we will get out alot quicker if we are United, then if we are divided!

Remember:
"United We Stand, Divided We Fall"??

We CANNOT WIN with all of this discord, and in fighting! We are dragging this out like a HOWARD K. STERN court battle.
Lets get it done together!

God Bless America and President Bush!

The President DOESN"T have to ask for approval, but always does. He wants a United Front, he NEVER slams the Democrats. Just because someone is not a great public speaker (as Bush himself has always admitted), doesn't mean he isn't smart. He has a good heart, and doesn't rule with an Iron Fist, He was elected like it or not. There was no problem with the voting the second time was there???? When electing a President it is also Known that you are electing a COMMANDER IN CHEIF, this means he or she for that matter, will also be the Chief of the Military. Higher than anyone else in the Military. People should really pay attention to that. EVERYONE would love to live in PEACE. Repulicans don't like WAR, contrary to popular belief, But with the way the world is, I want a leader who is a man of Charactor and Conviction who doesn't want to tell the Enemy his plan. Who won't let the US get pushed around. Democrats always want a plan. It is a great idea on paper but you can't really plan a war, it is constantly changing, and you sure as hell cannot tell the enemy when you plan on leaving that is just ridiculus. If you were in trouble somewhere in your personal life, who would you want to have your back? A Democrat who constantly changes their mind? George Bush HAS your back, he will not leave you to go with the popular crowd. Turn around, can you honestly say that ANY Democrat would stand by you through thick and thin??? I don't think so!! I have no idea who I am voting for in 08' but I will tell you this I want a person who will have my back. Democrat or Repulican I want a person who knows what they believe in, and who doesn't change their mind to be popular. I will have to trust them to have my back, as well as the backs of my entire family, whatever their needs are. THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE, EDUCATE YOURSELF, MAKE AN EDUCATED CHOICE OR DON"T VOTE!

Karen,

Nice rant. Let me clarify one thing for you though. Saddam did not refuse to let in inspectors before the Iraq War, nor did he kick out inspectors. Inspectors were let in to look for WMDs, they found nothing, and were told to leave by us so we could start military actions. Get your facts straight.

By the way, ending your posts with the cry to "Educate yourself" is really ironic, given your complete lack of understanding of spelling, punctuation, or sentence structure. Perhaps you should read an English textbook before wading into the confusing waters of foreign policy.

Posted by: steveGA at April 4, 2007 08:56 AM

To SteveGA,

Good try to skate the issues, a typical Democratic response. Why don't you educate yourself, before you try to shoot down what others say. Heussin was playing games, letting them in, then telling them to leave, not showing everything. Get a grip Steve. You should read and educate yourself, because your little try to slam my post is pathetic. Do you have anything to say with any substance??

Posted by: Karen in Florida [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 4, 2007 10:23 AM

SteveGA,

I also think it very funny that with the lenth of my two posts the only thing you chose to correct was my grammar, oh, and something about the WMD's (which is incorrect by the way) Don't you have anything else? I guess we can all assume that I am correct (except for those terrible grammatical errors of course) LOL. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Posted by: Karen in Florida [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 4, 2007 10:50 AM

"Majority Leader Boehner also issued the following statement:"

Ooops. You got it wrong. He's Minority leader now, because the American people decided Republicans were too stupid to hold Congress.
