March 27, 2007
An Exclusive Guest Post From Duncan Hunter For Blogs For Bush And GOP Bloggers

I'd like to thank Matt Margolis for giving me the opportunity to talk to his readers at "Blogs for Bush" and "GOP Bloggers" about my candidacy. I am committed to reaching out to conservatives in the blogosphere and this is a great opportunity to do just that.

National Journal ranks me as the most conservative member of Congress running for the Presidency based on my lifetime voting record. So, I don't need to hire an army of consultants to turn me into a conservative. My record hasn't changed since I was swept into office by the Reagan Revolution 26 years ago. In fact, someone recently pointed out to me that I have more experience in Congress than the top three Democratic candidates combined.

I'm also a Vietnam veteran who served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers. I've been to Iraq five times, have a son who served two tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine, and Chaired of the House Armed Services Committee. So, I know what it will take to lead the country to victory in the war on terror.

That being said, homeland security begins at our nation's borders. Knowing who and what are entering our country is critical to our efforts to secure our communities and protect our families. Illegal immigration is a national security threat. If you're looking for a candidate who will build the wall on the Mexican border and will put a stop to illegal immigration, I'd encourage you to take a hard look at my candidacy. I built the border fence in San Diego and proved that it works. I wrote the Secure Fence Act to extend the San Diego fence 854 miles across California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. It's now the law. However, construction of the fence is going far too slowly. If elected President, I pledge to you that I will complete the border fence in six months.

Another important issue for my campaign is protecting American jobs from unfair trade practices. American workers are the most productive and innovative labor force in the world. Unfortunately, they are asked to compete in an unfair environment against other workers who make only a fraction of a living wage and are employed by companies that face few, if any, responsibilities to the environment or to their employees. In addition, American manufacturers are forced to compete against foreign companies that benefit from their country's currency and/or regulatory regimes. We've allowed nations like China to devalue their currency and place high tariffs on our goods, which puts American workers at an enormous disadvantage, not because they're doing a bad job, but because our government isn't insisting on fair trade. Ominously, China is cheating on trade and using the billions of American trade dollars to arm its military. If I'm elected President, I will fix this bad deal on trade.

It is also important for you to know that I am pro-life, always have been, always will be. The life of the unborn child deserves the same rights and protections as any citizen of the United States. I have sponsored many pieces of pro-life legislation and have a clear and consistent record of fighting for the rights of our most vulnerable Americans.

In addition, you should know that I am committed to the principle that marriage is the foundational building block of our society. It is under threat by activist judges throughout the country. It must be clearly defined throughout America as the unity of one man with one woman.

There are other threats to our traditional American values. Groups like the ACLU have waged a relentless battle to remove any mention of God from public life in America. This strikes at our very foundations. That is why I took action to save the Mt. Soledad Memorial in San Diego, California when it was threatened. That is why on the Armed Services Committee, we successfully defended our military chaplains and preserved their right to pray without fear of censorship by military commanders.

Our Second Amendment rights have also been under threat. The right to keep and bear arms is an absolute right of Americans to protect their families and their communities and their nation with firearms. In this age of post-911, Americans, I believe are comforted by the fact that our ability to resist terrorism is not limited to law enforcement or defense agencies but is also within the ability of all gun-owning Americans. Gun control laws directed at law-abiding citizens are not a crime deterrent. In fact, studies show that private ownership of firearms by Americans reduces crime. You and I both know that the one thing criminals prefer more than any other is unarmed victims.

You should also know that I recognize Israel as America's most important ally in the Middle East. I strongly support Israel's survival as a free nation and a loyal ally of the United States. As President, I will not support any effort to further diminish the land area of Israel.

The whole world looks to United States of America as that "shining city on a hill" that Ronald Reagan called upon us to be. Enemies of freedom will find no more powerful foe than a strong America. Friends of liberty will find no greater ally.

Thank you for allowing me to share these issues with you. It is a time for choosing - for choosing what kind of America we will pass on to our children and grandchildren. My life's work is to pass on to posterity a secure America, strong and free. That's an agenda that I believe appeals not just to conservatives, but to the majority of the American people. If it appeals to you, I hope you'll take the time to learn more about my campaign at my website.

Wow. I agree with every position enumerated by Duncan Hunter. That's rare. I especially appreciate Duncan Hunter's stand on these 2 issues:

"The right to keep and bear arms is an absolute right of Americans to protect their families and their communities and their nation with firearms. In this age of post-911, Americans, I believe are comforted by the fact that our ability to resist terrorism is not limited to law enforcement or defense agencies but is also within the ability of all gun-owning Americans."
"You should also know that I recognize Israel as America's most important ally in the Middle East. I strongly support Israel's survival as a free nation and a loyal ally of the United States. As President, I will not support any effort to further diminish the land area of Israel."-Duncan Hunter

I hope he means what he says.

I believe he means what he says. While still too early for me to completely endorse anyone, to date, Hunter seems the best bet in the race so far.

I hope he can get his words out to other conservative blogs and start getting the attention his candidacy deserves.

Of all running so far, he seems the most conservative.

Too late for me.... I just registered on Hillary's website..

Laugh if you want but I'm willing to go anywhere to debate with the libs lol

Of the two defects of Mr. Hunter as a candidate, the one about him being relatively unknown to the larger public is probably the greatest stumbling block - the other is, as he alludes in his piece, that he isn't an out and out free trader, as we understand it today.

That was a stumbling block to me, at least, but it isn't anymore - if anything, I'm a bit more harsh...I would break off all trade relations with China. If we are to buy cheap, consumer goods from foreign lands, I'd much prefer we purchased them from the free people of India than from the long-suffering, enslaved masses of China...giving the Chinese a better standard of living only further clamps the chains of tyranny 'round their necks...that, and it also funds the military build up of a nation which seems bent on challenging us in the Asia/Pacific theater.

As for how Mr. Hunter is going to get himself well enough known - that is something I'll be interested to see, because I can't see how it can be done.

I think he'd make a great waiter at Gitmo, the way he explained the cuisine at Club Mo made my mouth water.

Duncan Hunter already has the experience and conservative credentials to run for president, in spades. However, the liberal MSM is well, the liberal MSM. If I were running for president as a Republican in 2008, I'd hire an advertising agency to create some glitzy, eye-catching and very memorable ads for broadcast on YouTube and other internet blogs. Hunter has the substance, now he needs to create a little flash to get the attention of the media.

Hmmm, if I had any intention of backing any candidate at this early point, Duncan would seem to be the one.

It's a long time till the primaries start, plenty of time for Mr. Hunter to get his name out there.

"If you're looking for a candidate who will build the wall on the Mexican border and will put a stop to illegal immigration, I'd encourage you to take a hard look at my candidacy."

Duncan, you should also consider constructing a fence along the Canadian border. The loyal Bush supporters who post here consider Canada to be a hot-bed of terrorist activity and a grave threat to your national security. In addition to being liberal cry-baby wimps, we have to rely on our armed & ready kick-ass southern neighbor to protect our drugged-out socialists' souls.

Can't you promise your future supporters a solution to the 'Canadian problem'?

Dear Mr Hunter:

I'm a "checks & balance" indie voter, vet, single parent, etc.

I'll vote GOP for POTUS if the house looks like it's gonna stay Dem (check n balance).

what I still don't get re anti-abortion position is the continued inaction concerning the destruction of fertilized embyros at fertility clinics.

please explain.

thank you.

At this early stage Duncan Hunter is what he claims to be: the most Conservative Candidate in the field. Unfortunately he suffers from low name recognition and very little exposure.

His chances of getting the nomination are very slim. However I would love to see him as the VP candidate. Think of him as the President Pro Tempor. It would be great! Pare him with someone who has better name recognition...say Fred Thompson and you have a dynamite platform.

But really it's just too early to tell at this point. Right now all we can really support is ANYBODY BUT McCAIN!

Jeremy, I think you're on to something. Thompson-Hunter has a nice ring to it.

Chose life

Don't worry I'm not about to go loonie left or crazy right...

I prefer to research and find out the facts and make an informed decision on isssues... not just repeat misinformation as if it was a fact.

Seeing that I go onto various sites.. I do find the right more tolerant of differing opinions then those on the left..

Never been banned on a right site but do get banned from the left sites

So......
Knows how to handle Iraq, big fence, thinks China is cheating, pro life, anti gay, gun loving and only sympathetic towards Israel.
“Enemies of freedom will find no more powerful foe than a strong America. Friends of liberty will find no greater ally”
This moves me so much my tears are running freely. Such a patriotic. I bet all you Neocons are clapping your little hands now. It must have been especially nice for you that there was no mention of the environment. Well, Global warming is just a conspiracy anyway to undermine the US economy.
Hey before I forget it I’m running for president as well, here’s my pitch:

Iraq: The first thing I will do is acknowledge that going in there in the first place was a mistake. Then I will start dialogs with Iran and Syria and many others, they also want a solution. I will talk to them and not try to humiliate them into submission (historically I know that doesn’t work). After that I will set timetable but continue to support the Iraqi government.
Trade: That’s a tough one. I’ll hire some really clever people with different points of views and together we will figure it out.
Abortion: I’m not a fan of abortion but up until a certain point (12 weeks) it is ultimately the woman’s choice. I would probably implement more education in schools regarding the importance of prevention. Never believed in the whole “no sex before marriage” thing.
Gay marriage: I think the bible is an interesting BOOK but for the most part I will not let it dictate your lives. Marriage is a union between two adult people who love each other. My theory here is that anyone who’s passionately against gay marriage most likely suppressed gay tendencies himself.
Gun control: I suggest we get rid of them. More people get shut in the United States than any other country proportionately to the number of citizens. It’s because you all have guns. You think you need a gun to be safe. This is wrong. You need to get rid of all your guns to feel safe. We will start with getting rid of the criminal’s guns. After that there is no excuse!
Israel/Palestine: Here we have to remember that Palestine also has rights. The only good solution is one that takes both sides into consideration. Hamas was elected democratically and we should therefore deal with them otherwise this will never end. They are most likely going to refuse to recognize Israel’s right to exist because by doing so there dream would be over. They would however agree to a face-saving compromise like a 25 year cease fire. If my plan goes well Palestine would be a nice place in 25 years and they will be satisfied. So, let’s quickly agree on a border. Split up Jerusalem (or make it neutral territory), and all help finance the creation of a nice Palestinian state. Something they can be proud of. A prosperous place where the thought of bringing your children to school is more appealing then blowing yourself up.
Environment: There is a virtually unlimited amount of alternative energy at our disposal. If it wasn’t for the Oil Industries “habit” of undermining any attempt made to explore alternatives to oil we would for the most part be off the oil by now. I think its time to stop accepting donations from companies who do not have the countries best interest at heart.
Thank you for this opportunity to address you.
Yours sincerely
Rasmus from Denmark - Your next president

Be careful Doug, if you pay too much attention you might catch som'm and become one of ... gulp ... US !!

He'd be required to get a lobotomy.

Hey, Doug, let me know how long you last there, before you get banned. I got banned from Kerry's website in '04, for using the term "liberal." I got banned from one of Dean's old sites for gloating after the '04 election. They're not as tolerant as they profess, these libs. They're rather unprogressive...

Posted by: God is Great--Libs I Hate... [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2007 05:10 PM

Go is Great

I never get banned for calling names or using a derogatory term, such as "liberal' :)

I usually get banned for supplying links to actual documents, that give the complete story, as opposed to just iased opinion articles ...

I'm stupid in the fact that I've read all the UN inspectors reports in regards to Iraq.
I've read all the UN security council members comments on Resolutions and debates.
I've read the entire report on the findings in regards to Saddam /WMD.
I've even read interviews with UN inspectors immediately before and after the start of military action in Iraq.

Read UN reports on chemical weapons used in Iran/Iraq war and where the actual chemicals came from...

Have never been able to find an economic analysis that shows the benefits of War for Oil.

Know that Canada actually has the worlds 2nd largest oil reserves.. and not Iraq. ... and that the NAFTA agreement calls for Canada to first supply oil to USA in case of emergencies.

Seems the more liberal sites.. aren't interested in facts...

Posted by: DougH at March 27, 2007 07:22 PM

Rasmus,

Syria and Iran don't want a solution to Iraq...they like chaos, death and destruction. A Dane, who's parents and grandparents dealt with Nazi occuption, should understand that there are genuinely evil people in the world who can't be reasoned with.

Posted by: Mark Noonan at March 28, 2007 01:12 AM

Noonan,

Try not to think of things in terms of good and evil. From your perspective you are good but others see that differently. Luckily the Iranian leader is as unpopular in his country and Bush is in yours. The vast majority of Iranians do not want a war. They just want a peaceful future for their children just like the vast majority of Americans do. Both countries however also have a “bring’em on” crowd. This is the group I seriously think you belong to Noonan. People in this group are highly motivated by national pride, religion and operate only in terms of good and bad. The “bring’em on” crowd only see one solution to the problem and that is that the other side (the bad side) submits to their demands. Both sides think that God is on there side when in fact any loving and forgiving God would be horrified by both sides.

Posted by: Rasmus at March 28, 2007 04:10 AM

Noonan,

Have you ever personally had a conflict with someone who refused to talk it over with you unless you agreed with him first? Probably not, because individuals do not behave like this. Well you administration does and it’s pissing off most other countrys in the world (even your “friends”). You are creating lots of problems that I believe could be solved. Iran and Syria want a solution but they will not be humiliated into submission. In Diplomacy you give and take. You need to find a way to make your enemies save face if you want them to change. This “my way or the highway” attitude will blow up in your face very soon.
To you a strong person is someone who never changes his point of view. To me that is an inflexible idiot. Deep down inside you must know that your president is not the brightest guy in the world, and yet you seem to think all his decisions are bright. Please, explain it to me like I’m a 4 year old because I want to understand.

Posted by: Rasmus at March 28, 2007 12:43 PM

I like Duncan Hunter. He has clear cut policy positions. These resonate with my sense of where America should be heading. The other candidates seem to be more about image than policy. I want the issues Hunter champions, debated at the Presidential level. These issues will impact America for decades to come. They will not go away. We better deal with them now.

Hunter has the courage to grab the bull by the horns; it could be quite a ride.

I'm looking forward to the challenge of persuading my friends, as I know Hunter is looking forward to the challenge of debating the issues facing America's future.

Posted by: jim at March 29, 2007 04:18 PM

Mr. Hunter: With the recent rocket attacks into Israel (rockets funded by US aid money), would you consider permanently banning all such aid to the Palestinians?

Posted by: Jim at March 29, 2007 07:23 PM

Jeremy and retired spook...my dream ticket would be Thompson/Hunter too. It would be Hunter/Thompson if not for "name recognition". Then the next time Representative Hunter runs for President he'll win hands down.
