A Tangled "Webb"?

Jim Webb's aide arrested with his boss' loaded gun:

WASHINGTON (AP) - An aide to Sen. Jim Webb was arrested Monday when he entered a Senate office building with a loaded pistol belonging to the senator.

Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said the aide was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possessing an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.

A congressional official briefed on the incident said Webb gave the gun to Thompson when the assistant drove him to an airport earlier in the day. Thompson, upon entering the Senate building, forgot he was carrying the weapon.

"To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight," Webb's office said in a statement. It said it had no other details.

As Andy points out, to what degree is Jim Webb culpable with regard to his decision to keep a loaded weapon; and 2. Did Jim Webb have a permit to carry such a weapon in such a manner? 3. Is Jim Webb culpable for negligence in not keeping tabs on said loaded weapon?

A full investigation needs to take place. A crime has been committed and the American voters deserve to have their elected officials held accountable.

I look forward to wall-to-wall coverage on CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, and FOX.

But oops-- heh. Silly me.

Webb is a democrat.

My bad.

On second thought, at best, look for this story on the bottom left corner of page 14A of the New York Times, with like deference given to the story by the alphabet broadcast networks.

****UPDATE****

Free Republic has this:

It is looking increasingly likely Sen. Webb possessed, controlled, and carried a unregistered handgun around the District of Columbia, and was last known to had possessed a unregistered weapon and ammunition at an airport terminal before handing over possession to another individual (possibly a criminal offense as well because Webb was not a licensed firearms dealer). All serious crimes in the District of Columbia.

No person or organization (other than law enforcement officers, members of the military or licensed dealers) may possess or control any firearm in the District unless the person or organization holds a valid registration certificate. D.C. Code § 7-2502.01. Pursuant to section 7-2502.02, several types of firearms are unregisterable, including sawed-off shotguns, machine guns, short-barreled rifles, and handguns not registered to the current owner prior to September 24, 1976.

Pursuant to section 7-2502.06(a), a person must obtain a registration certificate prior to taking possession of a firearm from a licensed dealer or from any person or organization holding a registration certificate for the firearm. In all other cases, an application for registration must be filed immediately after a firearm is brought into the District [or within 48 hours if such person personally communicates with the Metropolitan Police Department and provides such information as may be demanded].

But again, we need to remember-- Jim Webb is a democrat. Laws don't apply to liberal democrats. Must. Keep. That. In. Mind.

And here I thought Webb joined the anti-war pacifists.

Democrats are in control, Republicans on the Hill are spineless. Just who does he fear that he needs to carry a gun?

Imagine of this was a republican. There would have been screams from the lib media for his resignation even before the story broke. I'm sure chris matthews will be all over this story like white on rice. Not.

WHat's wrong with carrying a gun to protect yourself in this evil world ?

I'm sure the NRA will rush to his defense.

btw... How many US soldiers in Iraq were killed with Webb's gun ?

Please folks, quit grasping desperately for a story, ANY STORY, that will take the Bush administration disasters off the front page.

These tactics dont work anymore, America is awake now. Get used to it.

Posted by: Chose.Life.Not.War at March 27, 2007 06:47 AM

If my boss handed me an unregistered and loaded weapon plus two full clips, I certainly wouldn't 'inadvertently' try to bring it through security. I think I would remember I had it on me.

But remember, this was Webb's aide who tried to get the weapon past security. Someone who can be blamed for the whole mess, while Webb can skate on by without fear of the MSM coming down on him.

Posted by: Hermie [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2007 07:48 AM

Wonder what Webb's record is on gun control? Perhaps he's only against gun ownership for the "little people".

Posted by: DM at March 27, 2007 08:37 AM

Of course, now that he's a democrat and under this new culture of connivance and corruption on the Hill, "naughty boys" is about all we'll hear about this episode! If he were still a republican though, oh boy! There is something definitely not right about this guy and it's scary that this weirdo has to have a loaded gun inside the Capitol building. What's that about? Shame on Virginia for voting in this clown.

Posted by: Al at March 27, 2007 08:40 AM

Sorry Leo the story was covered extensively by CNN's Wolf Blitzer in the situation Room at both 1600 and 1900h. The story also was covered at the New York Times, Washington Post, ABC, CBS, NBC the local affiliates of these in Richmond, DC, and Norfolk, Virginia (WAVY, WVEC, WTKR, WRVA), Webb's home state.

The staffer will be arraigned and will likely be fined for the offense, barred from the House or both but likely will not suffer incarceration.

A small oversight is that the gun was registered in the Commonwealth of Virginia to Webb but since handguns are illegal in the District the weapon should be called illegal instead of unregistered.

Posted by: Pain at March 27, 2007 10:02 AM

You can chide him for breaking the law, but the hypocrisy charge isn't likely to stick. Webb is pro-gun ownership.

As pain noted abve, this story was covered by many major news outlets. I heard about it before reading it here.

I do think there should be an investigation, and if he or his aide violated DC's laws, it should be handled the same way any similar case is handled. I have no idea what the norm is there. Any DC attorneys here?

My belief that he should be investigated and possibly prosecuted is not motivated by a dislike of the guy. On many other issues, I support him, and I do not think he or his aide were likely planning to shoot someone. My belief comes from support for the idea of gun control laws, the idea that all are subject to the law, and the thought that Webb should have been aware of the laws of DC. So, I'm puzzled. Do conservatives believe that the law is a good one, and that he should be punished for carrying a firearm? I suspect that it's all about team GOP winning, and there is no real commitment to any real principle. If gun control laws are a bad idea, they should remain a bad idea even if democrats suffer from them. Just a thought.

james allegro: "Imagine of this was a republican. There would have been screams from the lib media for his resignation even before the story broke."

Actually, Rep. Hostettler (R-IN) made the mistake of packing a loaded gun in his briefcase and attempting to go through an airport checkpoint. He paid a fine. That was pretty much the end of the story.

Posted by: Ricorun [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2007 12:43 PM

Wow, you guys are onto something, except for the fact that both "Washington, D.C." airports are located in Virginia.

Posted by: anon at March 27, 2007 02:30 PM

Im a lifelong NRA member and have had my CCW for over 10yrs.
His aid was a complete idiot for 'forgetting' that his briefcase contained a pistol and ammunition. That leads me to believe that between the time he received the gun from Sen. Webb to the time of his arrest he was probably careless with his briefcase.

DC has the craziest gun laws in the nation. Most states have what is called peaceable journey laws. Meaning if I drive from VA to Florida for a gun show I can carry my gun with me in my car and the state will honor Virginia's gun laws.
In DC. The second you come to a stop (to get gas, getting pulled over for speeding) you are in violation of DC gun laws.

As for Sen Webb carrying a pistol. I support it 100%. He has a Va CCW and DC honors that. Senators with CCW's are allowed to bring their firearms onto congressional property, but it must be unloaded.
Anyone that has been on the mall after dark (recently there were several attacks and attempted rapes right on the mall)can attest to the fact the DC is not the friendliest town after dark.

I seem to remember a few years ago a Senator/congressman accidentally discharged a firearm in his office....but I cant find it will google.

Posted by: IT for life [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2007 04:25 PM

I just noticed The Free Republic mentioned the hand off occurred at the airport and this violates DC laws.

There are no airports in DC. They all reside in VA.

Sometimes the ignorance the general population has about our Capital amazes me.

Posted by: IT for life [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2007 04:29 PM

SO I am not exactly sure what you are talking about - apparently the senator has a permit to carry a concealed weapon - so why would this be a crime of Jim Webb? Further this appears to be a one time occurrence for his aide? I guess whatever the appropriate punishment for the aide should be followed - I am not sure why you think this is an impeachable offense for Jim Web who doesn't seem to have done anything ? Nor why this is evidence of some vast left wing conspiracy

KB - There are no CCW's in DC. Webb has one in Virginia. Some guns (like a semi-automatic pistol) are not legal in DC, no matter what. Notice the gun type has not been described.

Point is, DEMOCRATS pulled the DC Voting Rights Act LAST week because of an attached repeal of DC gun restrictions. Now, it turn out that a Democrat may be a flagrant violator of those laws.

I have a Virginia Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun. But I know better than to carry one into DC. Though I disagree with it strongly - Webb should have and probably DID know better. Since they refused to change the law, to hell with them if it burns them.

Webb says he's a strong 2nd Amendment supporter? Well, why doesn't he author a bill to guarantee gun rights along the lines of the Voting Rights ACT/ How about the Webb Gun Rights Act of 2007? He's one of 100 people who can actually DO something. Instead - he cheats. And oh, Annapolis must be proud of the way he’s letting a subordinate dangle in the wind for HIS mistake. SEMPER I.

Watching all you fat little products of home-indoctrination and obscure southern bible colleges wet yourselves over this is funny as hell. You are soooooooooo pathetic, little boys. Almost as pathetic as your daddies were 35 years ago.

If any of you halfwits knew the difference between your rifle and your gun, and had one-tenth of the "guts" you claim you have - rather than the craven hearts you were all born with - you wouldn't be here running your little one-handed Kooky Keyboard Kommando game, but would actually be serving your country walking the streets of Baghdad and hoping not to be blown away by an IED.

But doing that takes courage, something you sniveling cowards know nothing about and never will. Like Dear Leader Georgie-porgie you'd rather engage in all day pool volleyball parties with ambitious secretaries (unfortunately for all of you, this is just another one-handed fantasy, since no woman would ever spend five minutes around dorks as dorky as you are), or you have "other priorities" like 5-time draft dodger Dead-eye Dick.

But keep it up. You're a laugh a minute. Laughing at you, that is.

According to the Washington Post,

"Thompson's fancy Virginia lawyer, unfamiliar with the bowels of the D.C. Superior Court, led the defendant out the wrong exit -- forcing him to walk several blocks to a parking garage, surrounded all the way by TV cameras and reporters."

If that's accurate, it doesn't sound to me as if the liberal media are taking a pass.

Rico,
I love your sense of humor.
-------------------------------------------------

GIG,
It takes 10 seconds to realize that there are no airports in DC.
You would think a website that bills itself as "the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web"

would have done a 10 second google search.

But lets say they didnt bother.

You mean to tell me you dont remember Sept 11th? Reagan National was shut down because the flight paths take it too close to the Whitehouse.
They covered the locations of all public airports near the DC area.

For pete's sakes. DC is only 60sq miles. Where would they even put an airport?

----

Since when do Republicans get investigated?

Seems like all conservatives can do is look in the mirror and repeat what they see. Except they replace "I" and "me" with "liberal" and "Democrat".

Anyway, I don't think Webb intentionally did this, but he should get whatever is the usual punishment for this. We can't have people carelessly throw around their guns. Things like Iraq happen when you allow that.

With yours also - pretty wild time here.

Actually, I'm too old and fat to go NOW. But I did dress as a tree for a living in my past. Not that you'd know what I'm talking about.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 28, 2007 07:49 PM

But back to the point. It's OK for the Liberal Elite to pass restrictive gun laws and impose them unconstitutionaly on common citizens? It's OK for that same Liberal Elite to ignore the laws themselves?

All we get from you Lefty wackos in hate filled rants.
