They Think They're So Smart...

Many of you may have ventured over to GOP Bloggers today and discovered it was down.

We launched the February edition of the 2008 Straw Poll last night, and due to an overwhelming response had to temporarily shut down the site when it cause server issues over there.

The poll should be back up later this morning.

Now, the interesting part about the new poll is that the folks over at Daily Kos hatched a scheme to rig the poll by sending Kossacks over to vote a certain way, thinking that somehow they'd make the conservative blogosphere look bad.

Now, aside from the immaturity of such a scheme, I can't imagine how this benefits the Kossacks one bit. What good is it to them to skew the results of the straw poll? Shouldn't they care more about who conservative bloggers truly support? Kossack, probably more than any other group, have to believe that the blogosphere can influence national politics, so why would deliberately attempt to taint what could be solid, actionable intelligence?

UPDATE: I've received many emails from readers worried that Daily Kos had attacked GOP Bloggers. While there was an attempt to influence the results of the 2008 Straw Poll, I did not mean to imply Kossacks had attempted to shut down the site.

In fact, looking at traffic logs, incoming traffic from Daily Kos was actually quite small when compared to the traffic coming in from other conservative blogs. The fact that they were trying to rig the poll when we had to temporarily disable the site was only a coincidence.

No wonder I was having trouble getting to GOP bloggers. Fortunately, Michelle Malkin's Hot Air has a video of Mrs. Obama's "gas station" comment, so I had some idea of what the fuss was about.

I love the blog that you have. I was wondering if you would link my blog to yours and in return I would do the same for your blog. If you want to, my site name is American Legends and the URL is:

http://www.americanlegends.blogspot.com

If you want to do this just go to my blog and in one of the comments just write your blog name and the URL and I will add it to my site.

Thanks,
Mark

I'll cast my vote here, then.

Sam Brownback is the man!

Who'd the kossacks think they were going to get us to vote for which would make us look bad? That Massachusetts Liberal Romney?

Posted by: Harry Stockressy at February 12, 2007 12:33 PM

Harry Stockressy: Whatever your dissatisfaction with Mr. Romney, I'd still put him WAY above Mr. Giuliani or Mr. McCain, who are RINO (Republican In Name Only) liberals to the core.

A Mormon just CAN'T be that much of a RINO, you see.

Brownback, for all of his conservatism, is going along with the "comprehensivbe immigration reform" fraud. Border Security and illegal aliens are the ultimate litmus test issues now.

Posted by: Nick Byram [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 12, 2007 12:53 PM

Gottabe Huckabee first choice with Tancredo second choice. All other candidates are unacceptable.

BTW, We've still enough time to impeach Bush for his violation of oath of office and desecration of the U.S. Constitution, refusing to enforce American law upon criminal migrants and criminal employers.

Posted by: Dr. Lead Based Paint at February 12, 2007 12:55 PM

Reagrding the kossacks rigging the vote... we are very familiar with this technique here in Michiagn. The Dems used that to rig the primary vote in 2004 here to make McCain look like the Michigan GOP primary choice because we had an open primary. This had a positive side because it encouraged the McCainiacs to self identify.

Posted by: jrfoleyjr at February 12, 2007 01:08 PM

Duncan Hunter is the man!

Posted by: GOP_FTW at February 12, 2007 01:16 PM

Right now I have to say my vote would be for Sam Brownback. I want to listen to all the Conservatives in the race first but as of right now Brownback is my guy.

Posted by: David at February 12, 2007 01:22 PM

I would love to vote for Newt, as the most brilliant pol in our nation. However, I am a conservative pragmatic. I will pull the lever for Rudy G especially if he picks a conserv VP. In effect, I would vote for almost any Pub over Her Highness. Rudy G is my vote as of today.

Posted by: Glenn Koons at February 12, 2007 01:39 PM

Did you actually expect the Kos to focus on their own candidates' visions? They can't do that because their candidates lie (ALL the 9/11 committee recommendations, cleaning up corruption excluding tuna factories, Harry'd land deals), so they mess with our candidates.

Posted by: Morris [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 12, 2007 01:57 PM

Give me Newt anyday. He is smart and a true Conservative and the liberals HATE him

Posted by: Christian Reppie at February 12, 2007 02:08 PM

Kos kiddies.....haha.. what else is new, that's all they are good for crying, making noise, and playing games. Newt is the best...I'll vote when the site is back up.

Posted by: Knightbrigade at February 12, 2007 02:09 PM

I like Newt - wish he'd throw his hat in soon -- Until then I'm pushing for Mitt Romney (crossing my fingers and hoping for the best...)

Posted by: Michael Cooper at February 12, 2007 02:20 PM

Voting for the lesser evil is still voting for evil. If this pathetic bunch is the closest the Republicans can get to offering up a conservative, I'll be sitting this one out. And if 2008 finds us with a President Hillary (I almost threw up just typing that) - well, it's a very painful but necessary lesson to them. I am sick of being taken for granted by an ungrateful Republican party.

Posted by: Keith at February 12, 2007 02:21 PM

My first choice is Newt, second choice is Rudy.

I have a real problem with U.S. Senators who are already campaigning 2 years in advance and can't be bothered to show up and do what little their job requires for the enormous pay, perks and benefits that they get for life. It is totally unfair to any candidate who isn't a Senator - but then again, we have Senators McCain and Feingold to thank for bringing us 'campaign reform'.

Oh, and don't forget that it is Senator McCain, who can't wait to give illegals the 'path to citizenship' at the expense of hardworking Americans who are supposedly so lazy that we won't work for 40 bucks an hour.

Posted by: Dorine McKinnon at February 12, 2007 02:28 PM

Screw the Daily Hogs!

Let's all be a little bit real here for just a second. Do we conservatives want to win? Well...yeah!

But, the looming problem, as I see it, is marketing. I've been saying it for months now that the Dems do a better job of bait-n-switch with their candidates and maybe, just maybe, we need to look at marketing someone that may not fit the exact conservative mold that we all envision, but one that can market his/her strengths in a way that appeals to the swing voter...which may be what wins this election in 08'. I know...I know, but...but...but.

But there comes a time where we need to be realistic. That time is now. We need to look at each Republican candidate and truly assess his/her ability to win..operative word "win".

Most of these candidates are good people, some are even conservative...on the surface at least, but at this point, I would vote for a Rudy because, even though he's not conservative "enough", he could "win".

No one knows Brownback, Mitt, or the other guys and McCain is a wuss. So, let's take a look at how Arnie handled himself in Cawlifoanya and see if we can put together a candidate that can "win".

I'm not saying Rudy is conservative enough by any means, but he can win. Why? The American voter likes him...that's why.

Posted by: navydad [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 12, 2007 02:28 PM

It's just too bad we can't import Howard from Australia. In regards to Navydad's comment, I think most of them are wusses, not just McCain. We could be on the verge of a nuclear strike by terrorists, and so I agree with his post in this way.

We need to stop worrying about someone who's going to please everyone's pet issue. I don't like Giuliani's record on gun control, but I'll vote for him over any Democrat I've seen. I love Tancredo's willingness to take a stand, but I'm not crazy about all his policies either. Most of the people of this country are tired of all the bad news from Iraq, and they want to give someone new a shot, probably from a new party if the last elections are any indicator. Most people simply are not and have no intention of becoming politically informed, yet it is our lives that their lasseiz faire attitude will take.

The only shot we have outside of a great mistake by the Dem's nominee is that in a moment of greatness someone will rise up, showing some guts and character, reminding us why we want to be Americans. The Dems run on guilt and shame; we need someone to run on desire and pride, a vision of an America we want to have a part in. Bush governed by love, acceptance and hope, and look where his approval numbers are. We need someone who'll fight back against the media and the Dems until our people can remember what freedom is worth. Or we need to stop pretending that our political fortunes are best left in the hands of the mediocre middle.

Posted by: Morris [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 12, 2007 03:04 PM

Hey Morris

I agree with the brunt of your post, but I believe that if Rudy were elected, you'd see him exercise whatever conservative values he has left.

I performed my own little exercise to see if anyone even knew the other guys and it was disturbing to hear that very few people have heard of Brownback, Romney, or Newt for that matter.

My vote would be with Newt if I knew he had a chance.

Posted by: navydad [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 12, 2007 04:00 PM

I do not understand why Tom Tancredo does not have more support among conservative bloggers. I get to hear him on talk radio a lot here in Colorado. He always impresses me as a gentleman, thoughtful and sincere. Because he wants to protect our border, elites in the news media want to portray him as a dangerous looney. Give the man a listen, if you ever have the chance.

Posted by: Bob Agard at February 12, 2007 04:23 PM

I want conseratives to quit acting like Lib's, we have the right message and can win with it. Liberal Republicans (RINO's) should switch parties so we know where they stand and they can't be used against us.

My vote would be with Newt if I knew he had a chance.

Navy, another retired spook buddy of mine in California e-mailed me recently to ask who my favorite candidates were. I told him that since Reagan's dead (and they broke the mold with him), I'd love to see a candidate that had a combination of the best traits of Rudy and Newt.

I was never a big Gingrich fan when he was Speaker, but since he left Congress I've gained a whole new admiration for him. He's extremely articulate, intelligent, certainly knows the ins and outs of government, and he's one of the best social and political analysts around. Like you, I'm just not sure he can win. Still a LOT of time left though.

Posted by: Retired Spook [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 12, 2007 05:25 PM

I am casting my vote and support for Senator Sam Brownback. I think that integrity and conviction will carry the day and that he will catch up in the fundraising department.

Posted by: Jesse O'Leary Kurtz at February 12, 2007 05:38 PM

Navydad,
I would support the New Newt but as much as he carries our party's message, I have doubts as to whether he can overcome. That is, I worry he'll become our party's Al Gore because he simply doesn't inspire warmth. The last election if anything taught us that it's not enough to have the best message, we have to package it well. I would say this is an unfortunate consequence of our culture's decline, but we'll never have the chance to fix it without a win.

Packaging is also where I have concerns Giuliani will fail. He's the everyman (flawed), and realistic. I don't have a sense our culture wants realism or flaws. We've seen war on the news for years now, so our nation I think will choose someone they can feel good about, someone clean who will promise more than they deliver. But our party is more idea driven at its base, so even though we may pick Newt, that generic ballot would make it very difficult to win among people uninterested in ideas, more into their guilt and releasing it.

Posted by: Morris [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 12, 2007 06:02 PM

Good points Spook & Morris

I see Newt coming across as arrogant to the swing voter and warm and fuzzy with Rudy. I prefer Newt for his intellectual competency and Rudy for his social skills, and in a debate, Newt would lose because the viewer would see his intellect as arrogant.

It's not an easy thing that "acceptance" thing, and when you've got a limited field to choose from, you either go with it or jump ship, and there ain't no way in hell I'm jumpin ship.

But what we can do, is to write letters, emails etc, to the Newts and Rudys and remind them of their obligation to the party to remain true.

I've noticed that many conservatives have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to voting, and you guys can tell me if you think I'm wrong, but in order to win this next election, we need to appeal to the swing voter, and you know what level of intellect we're talking about???? No disrespect to those swing voters, but they typically don't research their candidates thoroughly prior to election year and a lot rides on how well their prospective candidate carries himself when underfire by the opposition.

This is why I believe Rudy will prevail.

Romney, newt, mcain, rudy

Posted by: jim Delta Ohio at February 12, 2007 06:39 PM

The true conservatibve and the person that can save this nation and culture from self-destruction is Congressman Tom Tancredo. He is Pro-American, supporting the text and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence and the American traditional Values. He stands for protecting the borders and the sovereignity of the USA, taxcuts and fiscal responsibility, 2nd Amendment rights, and he is Pro-life; ie, a true conservative and a true American! Tancredo is my man. I can NOT support any other Republican running for president. Mr. Tancredo is against the Security and Prosperity Partnership (pathway to the North American Union.)
I will vote for Tom Tancredo. If he fails to win the primary. I'll be forced to vote for The candidate on the Constitution Party, which will likely be Mr. Gilchrist of the Minuteman Project!

Posted by: Marvin at February 12, 2007 06:42 PM

McCain 100%. I trust that his resolve to win in Iraq comes from deeply held personal convictions and that no matter how public opinion shifts tomorrow or the next week, McCain will not abandon those convictions.

Posted by: emmet o'neal at February 12, 2007 07:41 PM

Duncan Hunter offers much that conservatives and even non-conservatives can both admire and appreciate. Unique among an otherwise all too timid Congress, Hunter has distinguished himself as a forceful proponent of common sense views that find little favor in either party. Whether it be his principled defense of the unfairly or harshly convicted, his common sense stance against jeopardizing national security with a porous border while still being clearly in favor of legal immigration, his stance on trade that protects the individual worker and that is best for American business or his general openness to needed change as it benefits the public, Duncan Hunter has shown himself to be an articulate advocate of the public good and a credit to the GOP.

The man is known for his personal compassion, a quality that allows him to stand up forcefully on the right side of major issues. There are other proponents of policies which he endorses, but none come across as effectively as he does. His life story exudes trustworthiness and this is only part of what makes him the only effective communicator of conservative policy currently in the race. This ability stems from his good intentions which lead him to analyze what is correct above that which is popular.

This country needs someone who will analyze issues in terms of what's right for the people. In posts on Myth Debunker we've pointed out the need to give parents choices about the healthcare of their children, allowing them to use proven methods of alternative medicine without the nanny state threatening and coercing them as well as the need for alternative sentencing as an effective and compassionate way of dealing with crime as opposed to a system that has become increasingly harsh and punitive. No one should have to worry about facing prison over a simple mistake and prison should not be employed in cases which pose no danger to society. The current system threatens society in and of itself. With both these issues, as well as with so many others, change is needed and people who recognize the need for such change must be supported.
Duncan Hunter is the best voice on the national stage to accomplish these goals. He's also the best to explain conservative policy and philosophy to what has unfortunately become an increasingly apathetic public. It is in the interest of everyone to support him. As for the GOP nomination, it's well known that the media wishes to present a view of conservatives that is so skewed it would cause outrage were any other group subjected to the same. Duncan Hunter can effectively refute this image. No other candidate has even attempted to do so. For all of these reasons Duncan Hunter deserves our support.

Posted by: Yomin Postelnik at February 12, 2007 07:45 PM

Tancredo, Hunter or Mr. Gilchrist are the men to vote for. Those who support Romney, newt, mcain, rudy are mislead.

Posted by: Bob Sheridan at February 13, 2007 01:00 AM

Chalk my vote up for Duncan Hunter! Strong on border security, against trade deals like NAFTA and CAFTA that are gutting our manufacturing base and strong on national security issues. As a former Army Ranger, I have trust in him to keep our country safe! I like Tancredo as well.

Posted by: T.K. Malone at February 13, 2007 01:09 AM

Tom Tancredo has my support. He is the ONLY candidate serious about securing the borders

Posted by: Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder at February 13, 2007 09:35 AM

I noticed remarks about Newt being too cold... the GOP's 'Al Gore.' Newt's problem isn't a lack of warmth--- his problem is that he is creepy and overbearing at times. He doesn't lack for warmth.

As for the cold, unlikeable Al Gore: he was recently the star of a rather entertaining movie and is even up for an Oscar. And the warm, likeable George W. Bush is the most unpopular President of the last 100 years, even less popular than Nixon--- and even more isolated from the people than Nixon was.

Posted by: Timothy Horrigan at February 13, 2007 09:59 AM

I wanted to vote in your 2008 Presidential Poll however you do not have all the Republicans listed that have set up exploratory committees, like Ron Paul for example.
He would be my first choice, but you have neglected listing him.

Posted by: Charlie at February 13, 2007 10:50 AM

I cannot bring myself to vote for Rudy or McCain. I've seen the absolute chaos on our southern border and the lack of any enforcement of our laws as regards to who works here, etc. The ONLY candidates to address this are Tancredo and Hunter. Either will do for me. Tancredo is much more than a one issue candidate as some make him out to be. I've lived in the San Diego area and Hunter is very popular with people from both parties, in fact his district is more Democrat than Republican.
I will NOT vote for McCain or Giuliani.

Posted by: Tom at February 13, 2007 12:07 PM

Alright, are you guys afraid of Ron Paul or you just don't know who he is? As a conservative, I don't want to vote for a cross dressing liberal from NY, a polytheist who believes Satan is Christ's 'spiritual brother', or the Manchurian candidate.

Where's Ron Paul

Posted by: Casey Khan at February 13, 2007 01:04 PM

Tancredo all the way! He our nation's greatest proponent of border security and cares deeply about the injustice done to Compean and Ramos, the two heroic border agents. Plus, he is one of the few Republicans that maintained conservative principles by voted against the massive unfunded Medicare drug entitlement.

Posted by: Nick C at February 13, 2007 01:29 PM

It would be really interesting if Fred Thompson would run. He's got face recognition, presence, and follows in the tradition of Ronald Reagan as a conservative actor. We need someone who invokes the greatness, relevance and imperative of conservatism. He could really be that guy.

Posted by: Morris [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 13, 2007 10:51 PM

Personally I will not compromise my values any longer. IF The Republican party can not get behind a Solid Conservative Canidate in 2008 I will sit out and stay home. I an sick and tired of holding my nose and voteing another RINO into office. You hear all of these SPIN DOCTORS tell everone the republicans lost in 2006 because of the war, well they lost because they became more LIBERAL than the democrats so any GOD FEARING CONSERVATIVE could not condone the Rino's who had got hold of the party and stayed home.
