In between preparing my canapes and hors D'oeuvre's for the Great American non-offical streets are empty holiday, I would like to express how glad and grateful I am because I get to live in the greatest state in the union...California. The golden state. Home of the California golden poppy, California grizzly bear, and the California Redwoods.
I am proud to be from the State where I am represented by my district's elected officals: Representative George Miller, Senator Barbara Boxer, and Senator Dianne Feinstein. (am I lucky or what? Really...does it get any better? I don't think so)
I am soooo glad I do not live in the South. Hot, sweaty, stinky, and full of themselves. I have a friend who is moving to Georgia, poor bastid. The people talk funny, are mostly bigoted, (yes, yes I said it.) and eat strange food. You can keep the south.
Give me beautiful California any day. Let's see, do I want to go snow skiing in the sierras, or fishing on the San Joaquin delta, or drive to beautiful left wing kooky San Francisco and see the ocean waves bashing the rocks? (Thank God for San Francisco).
I hate the South.

*Chuckles*
At least you're honest raker. :)
I too love the great state of California. I was born and raised right here in the deserts of Southern California. I've seen the state change during my life but in the end, I still love this state, and it's neighbors of Arizona and Nevada. While I enjoyed my time in Colorado there's nothing quite like the Mojave desert.
I may not agree politically with about 60% of the state, I do enjoy living here. From the nice green forests to the high snow capped mountians California has lots of nice places to go. Though I can't really stand all the traffic and crowded nature of the cities. Give me the wide open spaces any day.
How can anyone live without a full stary sky after all hmm? Or live where the summer is cold and windy? (I couldn't believe the old saying about San Fran was true! Man it's cold up there!) Or where there are over a million people crammed into one little area? To each their own, but that's the fun of living in the great state of California, which is part of the even greater nation of the United States of America.

The only Southerners I wish we could adopt out west are the next President of the United States, Al Gore, and the last great President, William Jefferson Clinton.

I'm not from the South, fortunately, I live in a state where both parties take a bit more practical approach than their national counterparts...
However, one thing I'm pretty sure of, and that's the South hates you too Raker.
And guess what I found when I typed in KKK and California in Google... apparently they adopt roads for clean up in California... imagine racism EVERYWHERE!
Shock. There is a four letter word that I think best describes you... fortunately it's not profane, but I still won't say it... but it does rhyme with yutz.

I wonder what people here think of the recent Al Gore nomination for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Funny to see a Californian complain about bigotry and racism in the south. Seems I recall Los Angeles, still in California, last I heard, has had more then its share of really large race riots, from the mid 60s to present.
For me, born and raised a Southerner, lived on both coasts and currently in the Pacific Northwest, I see less racism today down South than elsewhere, where the "tolerant" reign.
As for our funny foods down South. A little story involving my ex-wife, a Californian, by the way.
Sitting at the table with our daughters and her parents for dinner, she looked at me, remembering I was a Southerner and asked, seriously, "did you ever get to eat normal foods growing up?"
Her Dad, a gruff old WW2 Marine, nearly fell out of his chair laughing at her. The reason, we were eating fried chicken, mashed potatos and corn. Can't get much more Southern a dinner than that.
Oh yes, another comment on our odd foods, she came to love grits, which is nothing more than ground hominy corn.
You see, raker, we gave up possum, hogjowls, and fatback with the Beverly Hillbillies. Chitluns we imported to California. ;)

Wade,
As it turns out, one of the "i's" I've dotted today might even wind up as breaking news...I've got a bit more research to do, but I think I've caught myself a Congresscritter red handed.

Nick,
He'll probably get it, just to stick a Euro-trash finger in Uncle Sam's eye...I much prefer Rush Limbaugh's nomination for the same honor...

It's a Euro-trash, mostly leftist award. Anyone can buy one--Jimmuh Cahtuh did...

Are you saying, keefer, that most of the winners come from a liberal background? I agree, Liberals are, by far, the prime promoters of peace. Ergo, are most often Nobel Peace Prize winners.

If you can read this story by Thomas Sowell at Townhall.com it may shed some light on the conservative argument.

Regarding NPP winners. Why is it that there are no peace prize laureates with substantial military background or that are of the opinion that peace typically is a a derivative of war/conflict and why would we place such high esteem with an institution that awards Jimmy the Kook Carter and Yasure Arafatass the NPP? It simply doesn't make sense.

I believe in order to be considered, you need to have some interest in benefiting mankind by adhering and promoting peaceful measures. Waging and engaging in war-like activities does not qualify. If however, you have a military background, say in the mold of John Murtha, and you use your experience for advancing peaceful solutions, well, I hope that would qualify. The operative word here is PEACE.
