To hear our liberal friends tell it, President Bush is a hate-filled, benighted Christian fanatic who is refusing to fund stem cell research which will cure all disease by next month - the truth, as usual, is highly at variance with leftwing talking points:
Feb. 8, 2007 (LifesiteNews.com/CWN) - Newly released figures from the February 5 budget indicate that from 2003 to 2006, the Bush administration spent $122 million on human embryonic stem-cell research. Estimates in spending for 2007 and 2008 are $37 million per year for the same purpose. The $122 million was spent specifically on research with stem cell lines derived from experimentation with live human embryos which resulted in their deaths. Through the National Institutes of Health, the Bush administration also funded human non-embryonic (adult) stem-cell research at higher levels. From 2003-2006, the Bush administration spent $799 million on such research. Non-human (animal) embryonic and non-embryonic stem cell research was also funded in the hundreds of millions.
As the article goes on to note, there has only been one American President who has ever funded any sort of stem cell research: President Bush. And it should also be noted that many Christians - myself included - are not entirely happy with the embyronic stem cell research President Bush has allowed, because it is still the product of the culture of death, and we are entirely opposed to it. We understand why he compromised on this, but we still don't like it.
So, here you have a President who made reasonable compromise on a contentious issue and is funding at a high level research which may be of great benefit to mankind...and the liberals hate him for it.

I was not aware of that. Where did you find that information?

PM,
Well, the news story I linked to found it - but you can find it over at OMB's website (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/), if you want to wade through the figures...which I've done a bit of wading, and it is some fascinating stuff...like the amount of money being put into making a cord cell bank in FY2008...very important, much more promising than stem cells, and no culture of death attached to it.

The President funds something you consider morally wrong and you call it a reasonable compromise?
People should never compromise their moral beliefs. They will be better for it in the end.

Perhaps you should have mentioned that the funding is/was for research on existing stem cell lines. You know, the ones scientists think are contaminated and aren't that useful at this point. No new lines or research. Sorry, spin away...

Embryonic stem cell research has proved fruitless so far. It's almost as bad as the global warming myth...

Bullshiite, GGLH! Global warming is not a myth, I know this because the current temp outside my house is -8F, not -10F as it was yesterday. By God, it was downright balmy today, I only lost three toes to frostbite.

3moreyears, so you're saying that they're just wasting the money then? That we should cut off ALL funding of embryonic stem cells? You know, just put the funding back where it was before Bush came along?
(I know darn well that's not what you're saying but you get the point. Call it spin if you will, but before Bush it wasn't getting any direct government funding.)

So when scientists or Democrats support any sort of embryonic stem cell research it's murder...when Bush does it its a compromise?

AJ Strata has a post today about an exciting breakthrough in stem cell research:
Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center scientists have found a set of “master switches” that keep adult blood-forming stem cells in their primitive state. Unlocking the switches’ code may one day enable scientists to grow new blood cells for transplant into patients with cancer and other bone marrow disorders.
If this research continues on a successful course, it could just make the whole embryonic stem cell/adult stem cell argument moot. Then we'd find out conclusively what motivates the Left to support ESCR.
