"Articulate" as an Insult?

Oh, for Pete's sake:

SENATOR JOSEPH R. BIDEN’S characterization of his fellow Democratic presidential contender Senator Barack Obama as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy” was so painfully clumsy that it nearly warranted pity.

There are not enough column inches on this page to parse interpretations of each of Mr. Biden’s chosen adjectives. But among his string of loaded words, one is so pervasive — and is generally used and viewed so differently by blacks and whites — that it calls out for a national chat, perhaps a national therapy session.

It is amazing that this still requires clarification, but here it is. Black people get a little testy when white people call them “articulate.”

Though it was little noted, on Wednesday President Bush on the Fox News Channel also described Mr. Obama as “articulate.” On any given day, in any number of settings, it is likely to be one of the first things white people warmly remark about Oprah Winfrey; Richard Parsons, chief executive of Time Warner; Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Deval Patrick, the newly elected governor of Massachusetts; or a recently promoted black colleague at work.

A series of conversations about the word with a number of black public figures last week elicited the kind of frustrated responses often uttered between blacks, but seldom shared with whites.

“You hear it and you just think, ‘Damn, this again?’ ” said Michael Eric Dyson, a professor of humanities at the University of Pennsylvania.

Later in the article, the use of the word "articulate" to describe the communication ability of a black person is called one of the last vestiges of racism.

Ok, so, let me just say this:

If you are a black American and you are offended when a non-black American calls you articulate, then you're being one of the most oversensitive crybabies in human history.

For crying out loud, get over this nonsense, ok?

the "rules" (4 those who care):

1) Whites cannot say or imply anything perceived as negative by blacks about blacks. Ditto for Asians especially koreans.

2) Hispanics can be explicitly or implicitly negative about blacks, like Mencia on comedy channel.

3) Everyone can say anything overtly negative about whites especially white males.

4) White males can only dump on other white males.

Well, at least Biden didn't comment on Obama's ears.

Posted by: Retired Spook [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 6, 2007 07:41 AM

This has passed the point of absurdity.
The only reason this has gotten any attention is because President Bush called him articulate. I'll bet you that most Democrats have used the same word to describe Obama and no one has said a thing. Why, I'll bet some black Americans have used the word. And by the way, white people get called articulate all the time! It's a compliment!

Ohio,

And Rule 5:

With racism fading fast, race-hustlers are to be allowed to just make up sh** whenever they need to pretend that racism is still a problem.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 6, 2007 11:01 AM

Two things:

Interesting how your evil left-wing MSM made a big deal about Biden saying it and not Bush, don't you think?

To give you a sense of how many of us see it, it is akin to someone complimenting a priest for not being a pedophile.

I'm sure some people may find it offensive that others would assume the lack of some stereotyped vice is a virtue, agreed?

Oh, and come down to Texas and I'll show you how fast racism is fading.

Posted by: Anillo at February 6, 2007 11:05 AM

I think people are more pissed about the "first mainstream" part of the quote.Ironic, He said it right before black history month?
Perhaps this is but an evil plot by the NAACP to display a fool whom they can refute during black history month? Kinda like the guy in the video who asks a stupid question so the good guy can tell him the answer and inform us all.
There's that theory, and there's the probable truth that Biden is just an idiot. Although I'm still going with my conspiracy theory. It's cooler.

Posted by: Intellectual at February 6, 2007 11:17 AM

Anallo,

Where did the left-wing, biased MSM make a fuss over Biden the Idiot's comments about Barack the Big-Eared? What are you, the world's foremost moron or something?

Posted by: God is Great--Libs I Hate... [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 6, 2007 11:37 AM

Are you kidding me? It was all over the news. I thought it was blown way out of proportion. Joe Biden called Obama and apologized and clearified himself for it. Hell, even John Stewart was poking fun at him for it. I personally dont see why the word "articulate" is such a bad word. I thought it was a compliment. Although, i still think Biden is an Idiot.

Racism isn't fading fast. Hard for some to see it unless they themselves are minorities.

Biden was basically saying this is the first mainstream black man running for president that white Americans aren't scared of.

But he should be more careful with his wording especially now since he's running for president.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Interesting. I have a number of black friends and they all claim they have NEVER once faced anyone being rasist against them.

Hm.

Posted by: AFWIFE [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 6, 2007 01:54 PM

AFWIFE,

That's interesting. I myself am not a minority. But I too have many African American friends.

Quick Story:
I live in Jersey. We went down the shore one year and there aren't many minorities there. Around the 2nd day one of my friends said he felt very uncomfortable there. I didn't notice anything abnormal and figured he was just being paranoid. Then about an hour later we went to the grocery store. I went straight to the clerk and he couldn't stop looking at the back of the store where my friends were. I couldn't even get his attention to pay because he thought he was going to get robbed and couldn't take his eyes of them. Now my friends are a lot more successful than I am. As the weekend progressed and I started paying more attention I realized they got a lot of stares and looks that I wasn't recieving. If my friend didn't say anything I would probably never noticed.

Also depends on what part of the country you're from.

I AM awaiting the "race baitor", Charles Rangle to weigh in on this one. For goodness sake, what the hell can anyone say, other than this is just another swipe at Bush, as he is damned if he does,
and damned if he doesn't. That this, could be twisted around to mean something other than the compliment as it was intended, is truly looking for something to bitch about-and of course, it just happened to be BUSH who said it. Anyone else
would have been given "A Pass". Talk about being hyper-sensitive, to a compliment no less. Wow...

Posted by: Jo at February 6, 2007 06:22 PM

AFWIFE,
Living in the rural deep south I am ashamed to admit, that racism is alive and well.
The level of racism is dependent on the race you are and where you live.
Send some of your black friends down to Lovingston, VA and ask them the same question at a later date.
:(

I'd like to hear Priscilla's viewpoint on this statement.
Was she being an oversensitive crybaby?

Priscilla, I live in the deep south.....you and both know what 'articulate' means when uttered by certain people. As much as I hate to admit it, I used to be one those people.

Purple Nation, you need to understand that even black people are aware of the simple statistical fact that more crimes are committed by blacks than by whites.

Even the "Reverend" Jesseh Jackson once talked about the relief he felt when the footsteps coming up behind him on a dark and deserted street belonged to a white man instead of a black man.

It is hard to tell the difference between true racism, which is (to me) the assignment of certain characteristics based on race, and a pragmatic evaluation of the facts, such as the fact that a convenience store is more likely to be robbed by a black robber than a white one. If all other things were equal, I would call the clerk's concern racist---but given the simple facts of life today, he may have been acting out of racisms or simply out of awareness of the statistics. There is no way to know without knowing more about how the clerk really feels about race.

The black crime rate is not racist---as a matter of fact, it is most often directed against other black people. But assuming that race is the reason the black person commits his crimes IS. It may be cultural, it may be sociological, but it is not due to race. That same person, brought up differently, would be no more likely to become a criminal than one of any other race. It is the assumption that the racial heritage is the reason for an action, or a characteristic, that defines true racism.

Many examples of culturism are misstated as racism. For example, as a middle-aged white woman from the West, I would be very uncomfortable living next to a black household which spoke ghetto English and played hip-hop all day. But I would be equally uncomfortable living next to ANY household which had the same characteristics, and I would prefer to live next to a black family which shared my own social and cultural values than to anyone of any race which did not. On the surface, my aversion to the music and other elements might be considered racism, but further examination would show it to be culturism---I prefer some cultural affinities to others.

One might argue that Biden was expressing an opinion of black culture, as a culture that does not usually produce people who speak as educated Americans speak. But he might also have been showing a glimpse of true racism, a belief that black people are usually incapable of speaking well.

But the real meaning of Biden's comment is that he is simply a poor choice to be the leader of the country, as he seems to lack common sense. Even if he was referring to a belief that black culture tends to produce people who speak badly and are not "clean" he was showing a tendency to blurt out comments that are poorly thought out even if not meant to be offensive.

I think Hillary's snide comment about Ghandi running a filling station is in the same category.

"the simple statistical fact that more crimes are committed by blacks than by whites."

Almiranta,
You really need to check your facts before making statements such this.

Please provide the Justice Department report supporting this claim.

I've already done the research, but I am curious where you are pulling your facts from.

After you post your supporting links I will post the BJS report.

Back in the days when I used to be a bigot, I used to make statements like that. However after doing a bit of research myself, plus other life altering experiences I changed my ways.

Posted by: IT for life [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 7, 2007 11:03 PM

I'd be curious to see your statistics. We know that in the cases of violent crime, like murder ~ blacks are 6 times more likely to be the victim, and 7 times more likely to be the offender. Can you put raw numbers to these statistics? That is; given the population in prisons is 39% African-American and 34% white, how many white perpetrators of violent crime have gotten off without punishment?

Posted by: Dasein Libsbane [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 8, 2007 05:14 PM

IT, you simply cannot just call me a bigot and make my assertion go away. If you have statistics that bely my comment, produce them---but don't issue some lame "challenge" linked to an accusation of me being a bigot.

I made it very clear that I see a huge difference between culturism and racism. And I made it very clear that I do not assign characteristics due to skin color or racial heritage. Did you bother to read what I wrote" I said ".....assuming that race is the reason the black person commits his crimes IS (racism). It may be cultural, it may be sociological, but it is not due to race."

But I freely admit to a type of bigotry. I am severely bigoted against people who fly off in knee-jerk spasms of name-calling when they simply do not know what they are talking about.

But it's lovely to learn that you USED to be a bigot, and got over it. I assume you mean a racial bigot. Good for you. Personally, I never WAS a racial bigot. I grew up with Hispanics and lived in a black section of San Francisco and when I dated a jazz guitarist all our musical friends were black and we hung out in black clubs. It never occurred to me to assign characteristics to anyone based on skin color. My friends of different races and ethnic and religious backgrounds have all been equally unbigoted.

But now that you have overcome, according to you, your own character defect, and lost your racial bigotry, that doesn't mean you are qualified to toss that word around at others---particularly when the post did not call for it.

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 8, 2007 08:17 PM

Almiranta,

I never called you a bigot.
Please read my post very carefully. I said I used to be a bigot and I used to make statements like:
"the simple statistical fact that more crimes are committed by blacks than by whites."

I never once called you a bigot, nor did I imply you were one. You just assumed I thought you were a bigot.

I did not even say your statement of facts(which is false)was bigoted.

Dasein Libsbane,

Your figures are patently false.
There are two documents that all publications base their statistics on:
1) National Prisoner Statistics counts
2) Census of Jail Inmates

This is published mid-year (typically May-June)
The latest publication was authored by Paige Harrison and Allen Beck, BJS Statisticians.

This is the only publication that takes into account: Federal, State and privately run incarceration facilities.

Once you read the latest report "Prison & Jail Inmates at Midyear 2005" NJC#213133
You will see the # of blacks incarcerated has decreased, while the # of whites incarcerated has increased.

The fastest growing population group? Women.

Always read the source of statistics.
