Now this, I (and a baby) can live with...

From here:

SAN FRANCISCO — Scientists reported Sunday they had found a plentiful source of stem cells in the fluid that cushions babies in the womb and produced a variety of tissue types from these cells — sidestepping the controversy over destroying embryos for research.

Researchers at Wake Forest University and Harvard University reported the stem cells they drew from amniotic fluid donated by pregnant women hold much the same promise as embryonic stem cells. They reported they were able to extract the stem cells without harm to mother or fetus and turn their discovery into several different tissue cell types, including brain, liver and bone.

"Our hope is that these cells will provide a valuable resource for tissue repair and for engineered organs as well," said Dr. Anthony Atala, head of Wake Forest's regenerative medicine institute and senior researcher on the project.

It took Atala's team some seven years of research to determine the cells they found were truly stem cells that "can be used to produce a broad range of cells that may be valuable for therapy."

However, the scientists noted they still don't know exactly how many different cell types can be made from the stem cells found in amniotic fluid. They also said that even preliminary tests in patients are years away (read the entire story here)

I am for any stem cell or other research that does not harm or destroy life. I hope and pray that something comes of it.

This study does nothing to support the liberal murder...er...I mean 'tissue reclassification' industry so expect the MSM to quash it as quackery.

Remember, in lib-land the only difference between a baby and a lump of stem cell bearing flesh is a single breath.

Leo,

Why don't you even THINK before typing! You are so brainwashed! Ahh, just kidding, I just wanted to say that to get practice.
Stem cell research seems very interesting, and possably very useful. I wish people would take one second to see that (until now) it requires killing a life to harvest them. Then you get people out there criticizing us for not supporting it. I support stem cell research, I don't support getting those stem cells from an innocent life. If we can find a different way to get them, rock on.

How do you feel about invitro fertilization, Leo? That, to me, is the real battleground. If it weren't for the hundreds of thousands of frozen embyros - and the millions more that never made it to the freezer - this issue would never have come up.

Posted by: Ricorun [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2007 05:14 PM

bongos,

you ought take a moment to consider how the miracle of life is brought to bear for so many thousands of couples a year who otherwise might not experience the joy of parenting without the assistance of in vitro fertilization - a process which requires the destruction of a number of embryos (or the more developed blastocysts). spare us your religiously fanatical [and very much hypocritical] moral condescension and think for moment how very much out of mainstream your lot has become.

Conscriptor,

You might want to spare 'us' your own condescension in deciding that other's opinions about this issue are always based upon a religious POV. I re-read my earlier post and found no reference to religion, perhaps you could point out where you found that, or did you just decide to smack that label on me to support your own smug self-righteousness?

What I did say, for those of you who cant seem to read, is that this study does not align well with the liberal belief that a baby is merely a lump of tissue until it takes its first breath. Thats a general viewpoint and of course doesnt go into any great detail about my views on invitro fertilization.

See that, conscriptor? My second post and STILL no religious reference, though I have no doubt youll decide to arbitrarily find one somewhere.

Just for the purpose of clarity...

"Nonetheless, Daley said the discovery shouldn't be used as a replacement for human embryonic stem cell research.

"While they are fascinating subjects of study in their own right, they are not a substitute for human embryonic stem cells, which allow scientists to address a host of other interesting questions in early human development," said Daley, who began work last year to clone human embryos to produce stem cells."

ok bongos - i admittedly read for too much into your comment and, after making false assumptions, unfairly categorized you. your first paragraph, in my view, sounded off a tone (liberal murder) one might expect to hear from those who typically espouse a particularly vehement stance against stem cell research of any kind based on some religious moral foundation.

Gasp!!! Religious moral foundation!!! Oh my!!! Perish the thought!! Why we can't have that, now can we? Before you know it the whole of the United States will be handling snakes!

You Christophobes never cease to amaze me, you know that?

Posted by: Leo Pusateri [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2007 07:22 PM

Look, the libs want to harvest embryos because it keeps the abortonazis happy. These libs have some fetish about killing the unborn, just to defy moralists.

You're right, Leo--they're a bunch of Christophobes...

Bongos,

Actually, I am with conscriptor. I mean... without any real argument, I personally reach for the wookie defence. Or was it the glove defence. If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit. Speaking of wookies, anybody seen the newest star wars? What do you think is better star wars or star track? Bongos reminds me of Darth Vader. You fascist! Bongos is trying to take over the world with his Nazi Christians!!! ahh!

where was I... ohh yeah. I am with conscriptor. How dare you religious fundamental degenerates oppose in vitro! yarg!

Posted by: Calvin [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2007 09:14 PM

btw, Leo, why is it that the left completely ignore the fact that nothing useful or promising has come from embryonic stem cell research? Why do they insist, as in the case of Michael Fox-Sheehan, that embryonic is the way to go? What is wrong with these people?

Posted by: Where's Obama?--CNN [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2007 09:17 PM

As a matter of fact, Obama--embryonic stem cells have been proven to be highly unstable, and very apt to grow irregularly or even turn cancerous. The amneotic stem cells mentioned in this study, however, appear not to be so unstable.

You're right that nothing useful or promising has come from embryonic stem cell research. And I, too, believe that embryonic stem cell research has all along been nothing but a front to sell human embryos as something less than human; and as such, to justify the continued termination of innocent life.

On the bright side, The Most Powerful Woman in America and her posse dont seem likely to include any outside discourse or amendments on any of their bills, so ESSR should be law by about..oh..march of this year.

The lame will walk, the blind will see, the deaf will hear and all who hurt will be made whole again. Try not to notice the sixty million dead babies piled up over by the wall, this is SCIENCE at work!

Posted by: Lose the Bongos [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2007 10:36 PM

Leo, as Rush has stated the reason the dems have turned the adult vs emryonic stem cell research into a pissing contest, is because their real agenda is abortion. All advances in stem cell research have come from adult stem cells and zero progress in emryonic.

I wonder what states like California and Illinois, which have already committed billions of taxpayer dollars into ONLY embryonic stem cell research, are going to do now? Will they take some of it back? Oh, yeah...sure they will, and PO all the activists who've spent considerable money and political capital scaring voters into believing that embryonic stem cell research was the ONLY way that the lame would walk, the dead would rise and Michael J Fox would be cured.

I remember the laetrile (sic?) cancer 'cure'. The politicos rushed to enact laws that mandated insurance companies fund all laetrile treatments, and accept it as a legitimate treatment. Laetrile was touted as an inexpensive treatment, and stories were written about cancer victims who flocked to Mexico for the 'cure', because the nasty old Federal and state governments wouldn't accept laetrile as a legitimate treatment.

The embyronic stem cell issue, is the same as the laetrile issue was, except on a bigger and more expensive scale.

When government seeks to choose 'winners' and 'losers'; or select one procedure or method over another, and commit billions of taxpaer dollars to it, we wind up with not only huge inefficiencies, but with no significant results and wasting of money and lives.

So, the argument seems to be that ESSR has produced no benefits and is just a ruse to kill babies. Maybe someone should tell the medical research facilities that are investing millions of dollars that they are just political pawns.

Bongos, it is already law; the left just wants to expand federal funding. It won't happen--there's this little detail; a president's signature is required. Do you think he's gonna sign this bill, if it passes the Senate?
