What We've All Been Waiting For: Mark Steyn on the ISG

Giving the ISG the treatment it deserves:

...and let's not forget:

". . . the Support Group should call on the participation of the United Nations Secretary-General in its work. The United Nations Secretary-General should designate a Special Envoy as his representative . . ."

Indeed. But it needs to be someone with real clout, like Benon Sevan, the former head of the Oil for Food Program, who recently, ah, stepped down; or Maurice Strong, the Under-Secretary-General for U.N. Reform and godfather of Kyoto, who for one reason or another is presently on a, shall we say, leave of absence; or Alexander Yakovlev, the senior procurement officer for U.N. peacekeeping, who also finds himself under indictment -- er, I mean under-employed. There's no end of top-class talent at the U.N., now that John Bolton's been expelled from its precincts.

So there you have it: an Iraq "Support Group" that brings together the Arab League, the European Union, Iran, Russia, China and the U.N. And with support like that who needs lack of support? It worked in Darfur, where the international community reached unanimous agreement on the urgent need to rent a zeppelin to fly over the beleaguered region trailing a big banner emblazoned "YOU'RE SCREWED." For Dar4.1, they can just divert it to Baghdad.

If so many lives weren't at stake, the ISG report would be the biggest joke in human history - it is as if Chamberlain had decided to bring in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia to be a support group for the Polish problem.

I think we'll get, at most, a polite mention of this in Bush's upcoming speech, and then we'll, thank God, never hear about it again.

During the worst years of the Cold War, we taled to the Soviets all the time. They wanted our destruction. Your hero Reagan understood the power of diplomacy. As wrong as he was on many things domestically with regards to AIDS, race and human rights, he was on point with diplomacy.

We can't just bomb the poop out of everyone we don't like. That's not the real world solution. Neither is the ISG, btw. But it's Bush's legacy now, and it's not a good one. History won't be kid to our Decider in Cheif.

Your hero Reagan understood the power of diplomacy.

Diplomacy, vis-a-vis cruise missiles in Europe, SDI, Star Wars.

Great diplomacy, eh, GravelMeathead?

BTW Mark, have you picked up on the DemocRAT's new talking point? I've heard it constantly, ever since the Iraq Surrender Group report came out. It's "we talked to the Soviet Union for 40 years."

Even Gravel used the talking point in his post, although he substituted "taled" for "talked." Must be too lazy to proofread his writing. Maybe he ought to get mommy to do it for him.

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 10, 2006 08:37 PM

Thanks for the edit, Keefer.

GravelMeathead...well, you're trying, aren't you little fella?

Anyway, SDI and Star Wars were one in the same and they do not exist today. We can't shoot down missiles. It's bogus.

Yeah, we put some nukes in Europe. But that WASN'T ALL WE DID.

And that is my point. We have to use muscle with Iran. If they start building a nuke, we take them out with airstrikes. No Democrat would oppose that, regardless of what your Kool Aid has convinced you of. But we can't just bomb them. It takes more than that.

In a couple of years when your boys are on their ranches, nursing their twins after rehab or rocking their newly married lesbian daughters' kids to sleep, you'll see what real governmental leadership looks like.

Posted by: GavinMeachem [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 10, 2006 08:41 PM

GravelMeathead, you are so full of sheist, your eyes are brown. No Democrat since Johnson was willing to use any muscle with anyone. Clinton and his symbolic airstrikes just didn't cut it, son.

You come here with your talking-point (expletive deleted), trying to impress us? You're just another (incorrect person of the liberal/left ideology). And don't tell me about leadership in the DemocRAT party--I saw none when I was in the military, from 1976-1996. Where did you serve, in the Cub Scouts?

You're a joke, Meathead, and I'm lol. Now run along, boy; head on over to AmericaBlog where you belong...

So what is the fix Keefer? How do we achieve our objectives in Iraq?

Posted by: Thrower [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 10, 2006 09:39 PM

Yes, Keefer, how do you clean up the mess? How do you repair the damage done to Iraq and her people, and how do you leave in good conscience after a mistaken invasion & occupation of a nation that did no harm to you?

Posted by: Canadian Observer [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 10, 2006 09:52 PM

Boys boys, stop bombarding the Reefer with such penetrating questions. He does not compute logic. he does not acknowledge reason. He is the classic knuckledragging boneheaded Republican right wingnut.

Gavin,

The leaders of the USSR weren't suicidal, and that is the big difference...the leaders of the USSR were willing to use force and subversion to gain their ends, but they were entirely unwilling to risk their lives or their privileged position by actually trying conclusions with the United States. The mullahs of Iran, and all of those terrorists, are more than willing to do any imaginable form of crime, and they don't worry about a counter-response from us because they are convinced that God is on their side in their muderous plans.

There's nothing to talk to them about - they want us destroyed, we don't want to be destroyed: war is inevitible unless we wish to surrender, or they entirely change their worldview.

Gravel..
You know we have had some really vile trolls on this blog, but you are heading for the top of this dubious list.
The comments re the twins in rehab and lesbian grandchildren are indicative of everything you stand for.
If I were you, I wouldn't open that Pandora's Box. How about the pix of Chelsea being poured out of every club in London (and a few other cities and countries)...And libs love lesbians..and gays except when they are Pubbies and then they are thrown under the bus!!!!
Now fess up..aren't you really Rahm Emanuel????

Posted by: Xango Annie at December 11, 2006 01:04 AM

Thower,

By keeping on with what we're doing - it is only a mess in the mind of the MSM, the left and anyone who wishes to subscribe to their worldview.

So what is the fix Keefer? How do we achieve our objectives in Iraq?

I don't know why I even bother with you loons, but here goes. I echo Mark's comments, and I must add that war, unlike leftist "diplomacy," is difficult. There's no script, no guarantees. I was all for this invasion of Iraq, having been in England during Desert Storm. However, having been aware of the powder keg called the Middle East, I was never overly optimistic about the outcome. These people, at least the radicals, want to live in the eighth century, and they want Islam to be the sole religion in the world. In the world. There are many of us who, despite our beliefs, or lack therof, don't want that.

I have no solution, boys, but cutting and running, as suggested by all you kooks, ain't a solution either.

Wow, CO and Canuckgay here together. That leaves axass alone in bed. Get back to him, boys--he doesn't like taking matters into his own hands...

Good post, Xango Annie--these guys like to criticize those associated with our side for the very behaviours they celebrate. I believe Gravel may like the fellas himself. Doesn't bother me in the least, just as long as they're above the age of consent...

Incoming House intelligence chief botches easy intel quiz

What do you expect, AFWIFE? These clowns have no intention to fight the war on terror, so why know who the enemy is?
