Well Said, Senator Cornyn

Senator John Cornyn gave a great speech on the floor of the Senate today, explaining why he'll vote for Judge Alito's confirmation... Here's a small portion:

It is clear to me, though, during the course of the confirmation process, that the reason I support Judge Alito – his philosophy of judicial restraint – is exactly the reason his detractors oppose his nomination. The sad fact is that there are some in this country who don't want judges who respect the legislative choices made by the American people. Rather, they want judges who will substitute their own personal ideological or political agenda for those choices made in the Halls of Congress by the elected representatives of the American people.

There are some in this country who have views that are so out of the mainstream that they don't have any chance to persuade the American people to accept them. For example, there are some who want to end traditional marriage between one man and one woman. There are some who want to continue the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion. Some even want to abolish the Pledge of Allegiance. But they know if they brought some of those issues to the floor of the Senate and to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, these are not the views that would be expressed through the elected representatives of the American people because the American people themselves don't agree with these far left, out-of-the-mainstream views.

For these advocates of these out-of-the-mainstream views, the only way they will ever see their views enacted into law is to circumvent the American people and pack the courts with judges who will impose their agenda on the American people. They believe in judicial activism because judicial activism is all they have.

Confirm Alito!

Awesome. Thank God for the internet, I don't anticipate hearing that on CBS or CNN. That is the message needed for future elections. Over and over again.

What if our only news was the daily rag, CBS, NBC and ABC. Horror.

Bravo Senator Cornyn!

Posted by: hammerhead at January 25, 2006 04:53 PM

I think Sen. Cornyn hit it right on the nose. I hope his poignant speench resonates with those moderate Dems from red states...like LOUISIANA! Let's get this guy confirmed already!

Posted by: Louise at January 25, 2006 05:18 PM

If the American People didn't support their "out of the mainstream views," then why did they elect these people??

Posted by: Georgia Frawg [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 25, 2006 05:38 PM

Looks like "the times they are changing" on Drudge Report.

ONLY 16% FIRM ON HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT

That means committed anti-Hillary voters outnumber pro-Hillary voters by 3-1.

Georgia, you are right those people made a mistake and elected the wrong people. Now they will also vote to fix it.

Posted by: Georgia Frawg at January 25, 2006 05:38 PM

Well, easy answer Frawg. They live in some of the out of the main stream cities in the U.S.A. They do exist!

Amen Cornyn, about time some leaders shouted it from the rooftops instead of leaving it to us little mainstream folk!

Posted by: bearmanUSMC [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 25, 2006 06:06 PM

Ahh... I think the 2000 & 2004 election of G. W. Bush and currently, the Republican controlled House and Senate of the United States of America demonstrates inarguably the far left's “out of the main stream” agenda(s) are not supported by the American people.

Elections have consequences and Justus Alito is one of them. Justus Roberts, accompanied by lower taxes, a strong national defense/security, a booming economy, and morality – after an eight year hiatus during the Clinton Administration - residing in the White House for a change are some others. Now, if only Dyba could replace Brier or Ginsberg or better yet Brier and Ginsberg before 2008, legislating through judicial fiat would be a thing of the past.

Posted by: mark at January 25, 2006 06:07 PM

Amen!

Cornyn is a better propagandist than is Rove. No content just emotional button mashing. Peace

Posted by: steve at January 25, 2006 07:49 PM

That was quite well said by the Senator. He hits mainy of the topcs dead on. Too bad my Senators aren't that good. (Razzle frazzle California grr...)

Anyway here's to Alito's Confirmation!

Posted by: Gozer [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 25, 2006 07:56 PM

congratulations on your eloquent refutation of all those awful straw men, sen cornyn

Posted by: dave richardson at January 25, 2006 08:42 PM

I believe Senator Cornyn is a former judge. If Bush gets a chance to replace another Supreme Court Justice, he could do a lot worse than nominating Cornyn.

Posted by: Retired Spook [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 25, 2006 08:53 PM

Senator John Cornyn is right. America has come to a crossroads. The far left has pushed the nation about as far left as it can go. The American people are choosing to abandon the hold the left has had on the country for the last 30 years and return to the strong moral foundations of this great nation. Elections do have consequences. The American people have spoken-they elected President G.W. Bush in part because he promised to nominate judges who adhere to a philosophy of judicial restraint, like Alito. The confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito is absolutely crucial to the defense of the American Way of life.

Posted by: Freedom1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 25, 2006 09:01 PM

Here, here! Bush won the election, Judge Alito is his choice, so to the victor the spoils. Polls say Americans want this judge on the SCOTUS and he is qualified to be there. Confirm him!

Posted by: Burky at January 25, 2006 10:54 PM

Personally, I like the suggestion that Bush's next nominee be Ann Coulter---she would never be confirmed, but you could sell tickets to those hearings!

I loved her suggestion that, when asked by Kennedy how a prospective justice would vote on a certain issue, the best response would be "Well, Senator, I thought I'd just drive off that bridge when I come to it".

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 26, 2006 12:00 AM

I hope every decent person out there remembers the way Judge Alito was treated during this confirmation process by the dems. Judge Alito AND his family. Thats what the libs and lib MSM think of conservatives. I hope this gives every decent person an incentive to go to the polls in November 2006 and vote republican, to send them a message.

Posted by: james allegro at January 26, 2006 12:13 AM

You people are really a bunch of fanatics. Alito will NOT be confirmed. Its gonna be a showdown and its gonna embarrass Alito and the Republican party for decades to come.

Posted by: Pastor Colon at January 26, 2006 04:18 AM

Slip, Ship, Steve, Frawg, and moonbats

A record 64 million Americans voted for President Bush. We expected him to appoint conservative judges who would interpret the constitution, not re-write it. The will of the American people is on the way to the Supreme Court.

The progressive dem party in the Senate can only bloviate for the cameras and pretend they are accomplishing something. They are only prolonging your pain because the vote to confirm Alito to the SCOTUS will happen. No amount of pouting will stop it.

Please keep up the delaying tactics. America is watching and the judgement of your actions will be felt in November.

The issue here with the "other side", is that they actually do not like democracy. They do not believe that the "mass of men" are intellignet enough to decide these weighty issues and thus should all sit back and let Hillary and Al Gore decide for us what should be done. They believe that the 64 million patriots who voted for President Bush were duped and are too stupid to know better. And sometimes our side can be just as condescending. The American people are smarter than most of us give them credit for and they see through the left. Let's not let them down, boys and girls.

Posted by: hammerhead at January 26, 2006 08:52 AM

amen...makes me proud to be from Texas, maybe we can get cornyn in the white house..wishful thinking

Posted by: bob p at January 26, 2006 08:53 AM

The present Democrat party have become "the Knights who say Nyet" (to paraphrase Monty P.)

They have no plan for moving America forward. Their only agenda is to oppose everything put forth by the Republicans. They are have lost power and are now loosing credibility. They are rapidly becoming "sound and fury signifying nothing".

Please keep it up moonbats, you are doing us a major favor.
