The Democrats Second Insult

It is all said and done, now - and after all is said and done, only four Democrats could find it in themselve to vote for a extraordinarily well qualified judicial nominee who just happens to be of a conservative, Catholic bent. The only Democrats who voted in favor, Byrd, Conrad, Johnson and Nelson are red State Democrats who didn't dare cross their electorate on this matter.

For crying out loud, liberal Republicans like Specter, Snowe and Collins didn't think that Alito represented the end to all freedom in America - why in heck couldn't at least a few liberal Democrats figure that, hey, the Republicans won the 2004 election and thus justices of a conservative mindset are going to be nominated? Is it really so hard, liberals, to accept defeat with good grace? Do you have to show your meaness, your spitefulness and your hatred at every opportunity? You're acting as if a conservative Catholic cannot support the concept of individual freedom and justice...I'm really trying to control my anger here, but some bridges are really being burned here.

When the Democrats were going through their spiel at the Hearings, I heard one phrase over and over again in response to speaking for minutes on end without asking a question or waiting for a response: "I want to get it on the record". So, I apply it here too. The know this guy is the most qualified justice in just about forever. They know that he's not the "critical swing vote" for Roe v Wade (The next one will be... Watch out!!). But, they just want... "to get it on the record". So sad.

You sound like a sore-winner. You got your nominee. President Bush's ever-expanding powers won't be checked. Congrats and suck-it-up! You won! Now do something, besides this decisive rhetoric.

Slipgrid: Yes, we did win. That's what happens when you win elections. Filibuster a judicial nominee = nuclear option = a move to the right. No filibuster = a move to the right. Suck it up. Get used to it.

I just do not believe it is good for the republic to pack the court with 5 Opus Dei, Catholic, men. Peace

Dude, you need to calm down... Eat some chocolate; maybe have a beer or two.

I think you are personalizing this too much. There are Catholics in the Democratic Party, and there are Democrats that don't support abortion "on demand."

I don't think that you should take everything that Democrats do to be a personal insult... that would just be silly...

Without sounding like a wise arse, really...what DID you expect from them? This ain't my daddy's Democratic party....

Posted by: John at January 31, 2006 03:05 PM

Yeah, I'm not sure why this is remarkable. Okay, it's something of a departure from the past... at least the idealized past, but just as we operate under many Clinton Precedents we now have a raft of Alito precedents. It is now Schumer's World where ideology is fair game for Advice and Consent. Sweet, I say. Bader-Ginsberg certainly would not have been confirmed if such sentiments obtained way back when, which means ANOTHER B-G is much less likely and that is a VERY good thing. The Dems are transmogrifying into a smoking ruin before our eyes. Enjoy it.

I do not agree with Alito’s views (unlimited executive power without oversight) but Bush did win the election, so we have to live with it. I would have voted against Alito, so I am glad that most of the Democrats did. What did you expect?

Posted by: Barneyg2000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 31, 2006 03:59 PM

My thoughts on abortion: I think that we have wasted 30 years (both sides) on this argument. I do not believe that anyone thinks that abortion is a good method of birth control. Yet, instead of eliminating the need for abortion (birth control, universal health care for pregnant teenagers, tax credits for adoption…) we just scream at each other.

What a waste of time. Now I will shut-up

and another bridge goes up in smoke.

Posted by: slaw at January 31, 2006 04:41 PM

This battle over Justice Alito was based on the struggle between advocates of unrestrained judicial activism who want to use the courts to impose policy agendas against defenders of the Constituion and judicial restraint. Sadly, most of these votes by the Dems disregarded Judge Alito's qualifications and credentials and decided to oppose this nominee long before the the hearing process began. They had the right to cast a vote, but shouldn't their constituents at least expect them to research the facts on this man and not assume how he will vote based on "personal" not professional factors? I expect that of mine regardless of my party affiliation...

Slip

you crack me up, just like the rest of the liberals with their Bush's executive powers unchecked. You all act like Bush is the President for life just like someone on the SCOTUS. Get over it Bush put people on the court who wont let you liberals legislate from the Bench since you cant get anything through the people because you are so out of touch with reality

Posted by: Jodi at January 31, 2006 05:29 PM

I agree with Mega on this one. Precident has now been set and when the tables are turned we'll deffinetly be raising all sorts of noise when another liberal justice is nominated.

Though I do wish it didn't come to this. *Sigh* Oh well.

"Is it really so hard, liberals, to accept defeat with good grace?"

Republicans are such sore winners. They have both houses of congress, the white house, 2/3 of the federal judiary and 7/9ths of the supreme court.

Now do something, besides this decisive rhetoric.

Look folks, Slippy finally posted something that made sense. Too bad it took a typo.

Mark, keep it up with your "decisive" rhetoric. Slippy, you may want to preview your posts before you hit "post." What are ya, 13 or somethin'?

Read this SLAW and then come again with the bridges, you pompous fools. Why don't you direct your anger where it belongs, at your traitorous parties doorstep.

shortz,

You can call it what you want...but it is becoming ever more clear to Catholics and other believers that you just don't want us...you hate and fear us.

Well, we neither hate nor fear you, but we are learning precisely where we stand with you, and are starting to act accordingly.
