Watch this space for the live blogging of the confirmation vote of Judge Samuel Alito.
Right now, Senators are still arguing over Alito's confirmation, but frankly, I'm not hearing anything new. Senator Patrick Leahy is accusing President Bush of trying ot pack the Court. Funny, I don't recall Leahy accusing President Clinton of packing the Court with his nominations of Breyer and Ginsburg... Leahy says Bush broke his promise to "be a uniter and not a dvider." Leahy seems to think Bush should nominate judges that meet the approval of Democrats (i.e judicial activists that support abortion on demand and affirmative action legalized discrimination) Never mind the fact that Bush received a majority of the vote in 2004, something President Clinton never achieved, but the Republicans in Congress did not turn the confirmation process into a partisan war, and Clinton's nominees were confirmed easily.
Should a Democrat ever occupy the White House again and have the opportunity to nominate a a liberal to the Supreme Court, I highly doubt we'll hear the same rhetoric then from Democrats about "consensus" nominees, "uniting not dividing," etc. etc.
Based on votes that have already been declared, it doesn't appear Alito will get 60 votes.
10:47 am ET: Reid is playing the Miers card, and sounded like he was reciting some of the GOP's talking points from after she was nominated!
10:56 am ET: Reid: "Blah, blah, blah..."
10:59 am ET: Waiting for the vote to begin... Reid says Bush didn't have to nominate a clone of O'Connor, but that he doesn't hhave a mandate to move the court in a rightward direction... So, did Clinton have a mandate to move the Court leftward?
11:01 am ET: Frist is up. Says there is little left to be said, so he will be brief.
11:05 am ET: The final vote is posted in the extended entry...
11:14 am ET.: still waiting for votes to be cast, but most were previously declared. The only unknown vote we're still wwaiting for is from Senator Rockefeller (D-WV)... Vote is currently 58-41. Alito is in...
11:14 am. ET: Rockefeller votes no. Ayes 58, No 42...
Alito is confirmed!
Thank the GOP! Send them a donation ending in $.58... $10.58, $20.58, $50.58, $100.58, etc. etc.

Confirm him! It's the will of the American people.
I think Reid was sweet on Miers.
Who's taking bets on when the first loon will come out saying the confirmation process was rushed and did not take the "traditional" 48 years to confirm?
Yeehaw! I can just see the Libs. head in hands, or wringing their hands! Oh no, this is the end of the world! Well just one more reason for them to hate America!
Lieberman is a disappointing but not unexpected vote. Guess he is a little worried about that political carrer of his!

So how did Feinstein eventually vote? I wonder if it will appease her potential opposition for re-election, Cindy Sheehan.
Well everything went as I expected. I'm glad he was finally confirmed!
WOOHOO!!! Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was front and center during the President's State of the Union address tonight! YEAH!!!
:)
