John Kerry's failure to convince his fellow Democrats to filibuster the nomination of Samuel Alito proves once and for all his irrelevency politics. It wasn't too long ago when he was his party's presidential nominee, and now he doesn't have the clout to get 40 of his colleagues to join him in a filibuster, which, if you believed his rhetoric, would have prevented return of segregation, slavery, and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of women.
No, it didn't happen. A mere 25 voted to sustain a filibuster. Just like Ohio in November 2004, Kerry didn't have the votes. The moment Kerry's filibuster failed so handily was the moment his political career got flushed down the toilet. John Kerry may not be ruling out another presidential run in 2008, but his party certainly ruled it out for him.
UPDATE: I will be live-blogging the confirmation vote... Stay tuned..

If the party of Democrats don't soon unload Kennedy, Kerry, and the rest of the wild eyed crazy moonbats that have taken over their party, they'll soon fade into oblivion.

Swift Boat Johnny made a serious blunder with this stunt. I'm guessing many of his dem colleagues would have rather just let this nomination go through without the useless filibuster attempt. So much publicity about another dem failure will not attract voters come election time.
JFnnK has no idea how much damage he has caused to any chance of running again in 2008... then again maybe he knows he will never be nominated again.
Thanks, Karl

In entertainment, bad press is better than no press at all. In politics, those out of power believe obstruction is better than consensus.
The obstructionists have a single purpose - divide the country and gin up support for some future election. When they lack the facts and ideas, they build a straw man, attribute abuse to it, and then attack their fabrication.
At some point, you would think the public will see through this charade, but don't hold your breath.

i have to give Mark Noonan grief for the 70% chance he gave the Dems of succeeding in this lame brain attempt. Otherwise, you guys are rocking! Keep it up.

After hearing the Kerry/Kennedy just before the vote, I was amazed at how much the supreme court does. Sounds like we can dump the legislative and executive branches altogether. Only the supreme court has brought us advances in this country, and Alito is going to trash them all by himself. I'm ready for the 'next appointment' to come up this year, wonder if Kennedy and Kerry can muster 15 votes next time.
Nebraska Militia - Karl's policy of letting them hang themselves works wonders. I can see Hillary walking up to the gallows now, while Bill watches and catches the eye of a cutie in the crowds. Reality TV doesn't have any programming/writers like this.

That number has to be utterly stupifying to the PFAWs to say nothing of the Movies and Kossacks. They must, at this point, wage primary challenges to each of these Democrats who voted for cloture if they are to even appear to believe their own rhetoric. The CW has been, and well founded in history, that the Reps will lose some in the midterms even if not their majority. If less than half the Dem caucus went with the Hard Lefties you can be sure they think the issue is a loser. It divides the sort of folks who turn up for off-year elections and turns off the wider electorate. I think I see yet another spankin' in train for our friends but we'll see in a few months. The one bit of good news for the Dems in this is that this event could POSSIBLY keep Kerry from running again. Kerry is as unmoored from reality as any DUer but displaces much more water. He is a menace to Dem navigation (yodeling it in from Davos! PRICELESS!) and, for their sakes, must be scuttled long before the electoral season. Of course for the sake of our funnybones; Long May He Sail.

I've heard some say he was pandering to get a leg up in the 2008 primaries. That may have been his intent. But I agree with you, he is now irrelevant. When you go against the will of the American people, you have isolated yourself politically. I hope even more Sneators than we expect vote for confirmation today to prove this point. Judge Alito is someone we can trust in.

I agree Kerry's sense of timing and venue are priceless
He'll probably next berate the President about the homeless from the steps of one of his mansions...or talk about world hunger from Spago.
We couldn't have two better unwitting allies the the distinguished senators from MA.

If he is a Rovian plant we must double... nay triple his compensation. I assume it is in euros.
