Independent Reports Have Found No Distortion Of Intelligence

Ever wonder why Democrats want another investigation into prewar intelligence on Iraq? Perhaps because three past independent investigations all concluded the same thing, that there was no manipulation of intelligence, and the Democrats are trying to create one that will say the opposite?

The Robb-Silberman Commission On The Intelligence Capabilities Of The United States Regarding Weapons Of Mass Destruction, pages 50-51: "no evidence of political pressure,":

The Commission found no evidence of political pressure to influence the Intelligence Community's pre-war assessments of Iraq's weapons programs. As we discuss in detail in the body of our report, analysts universally asserted that in no instance did political pressure cause them to skew or alter any of their analytical judgments. We conclude that it was the paucity of intelligence and poor analytical tradecraft, rather than political pressure, that produced the inaccurate pre-war intelligence assessments.

The Bipartisan Senate Select Committee Report On The U.S. Intelligence Community's Prewar Intelligence Assessments On Iraq, pages 284-285, "did not find any evidence,":

Conclusion 83. The Committee did not find any evidence that Administration officials attempted to coerce, influence or pressure analysts to change their judgments related to Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capabilities. … Conclusion 84. The Committee found no evidence that the Vice President's visits to the Central Intelligence Agency were attempts to pressure analysts, were perceived as intended to pressure analysts by those who participated in the briefings on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs, or did pressure analysts to change their assessments.

The British Butler Report, Review Of Intelligence On Weapons Of Mass Destruction, page 110, "found no evidence of deliberate distortion,":

In general, we found that the original intelligence material was correctly reported in [Joint Intelligence Committee] assessments. An exception was the '45 minute' report. But this sort of example was rare in the several hundred JIC assessments we read on Iraq. In general, we also found that the reliability of the original intelligence reports was fairly represented by the use of accompanying quali?cations. We should record in particular that we have found no evidence of deliberate distortion or of culpable negligence. We examined JIC assessments to see whether there was evidence that the judgements inside them were systematically distorted by non-intelligence factors, in particular the in?uence of the policy positions of departments. We found no evidence of JIC assessments and the judgements inside them being pulled in any particular direction to meet the policy concerns of senior officials on the JIC.

Pat Roberts, the chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) says another forthcoming report will conclude the same thing.

Besides, Bush says that God told him to attack Iraq, right? You can't argue with that sort of logic. Arguing that Bush shouldn't have attacked Iraq would be an affront to God himself. Now God has told Bush to whack that Hugo Chavez guy...no, wait a minute, that wasn't God, it was God's earthly emissary Pat Robertson.

By the way, what did God have to say about all you moral majoritarians stoning poor Miss Harriet Miers to death on the White House lawn?

Posted by: phil at November 7, 2005 03:35 PM

Way to change the subject, Phil.

Posted by: Matt M. [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2005 03:58 PM

Very logical argument Phil. I guess facts don't matter at all in your world.

Posted by: Jim at November 7, 2005 04:14 PM

If all else fails, use religion.

It's amazing when liberals do not even bother with the reports. Ever see a poor loser before?

Posted by: mcconnell [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2005 04:20 PM

Phil.....!!! God told me to tell you to shut your trap!!!!

Posted by: Lug at November 7, 2005 04:51 PM

Phil, you have way too much time on your hands to be lurking around on this site so often without ever having anything inteligent to say. When a blog thread is created, people are expected to talk about what the thread is about. We dont go on your blog and interrupt threads devoted to Star Trek by talking about unicorns or whatever else it is you liberals talk about. Please stop wasting everyones time here. If you want to criticise fine, but hijacking threads and idiotic statements like the one above about Miers being stoned makes you look like an idiot.

Posted by: Rich at November 7, 2005 05:15 PM

Phil: Wasn't Miers supported by Dobson of Focus on the Family? Is he no longer part of the moral majoritarians? I also recall a number of other prominant social conservatives supporting Miers?

Posted by: Kyle at November 7, 2005 05:30 PM

Funny how Conservatives are in the wrong when we successfully defeat a bad candidate nominated by our own party, but would've been attacked for blindly following our leader if we'd been silent.

Liberals just don't understand how democracy works. That's why they seem to suck so bad in our current system.

Phil . . . did you take your meds today?

Posted by: Rplat at November 7, 2005 06:14 PM

I'm just not sure why the administration isn't going on the offensive with all of this. Perhaps waiting for the release of Phase II of the SSCI report? It's seems fairly easy to discredit the "lied and manipulated" argument that the Dems are making with this evidence you've presented and also the declassified portions of the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate and the hundreds of statements made by the Dems and Clinton administration in favor of removing Husein.

Posted by: brah at November 7, 2005 06:33 PM

Matt,

Excellent post. This should be a permanent part of the site for all to see.

Seems the donks use the same methods for these hearings as they do for elections, like the one in Washington State. They just keep doing "do-overs" until they get the answer they want.

Posted by: Big Dog [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2005 07:35 PM

I think the Downing St. Memo's pretty much answered any questions whether the Bush administration manipulated intelligence or not. http://www.downingstreetmemo.com//
They were going to war with Iraq no matter what.

Posted by: Chris at November 7, 2005 10:04 PM

Quick question for you Chris, why did former President Clinton attack Iraq in 1998? Was he lying on his intelligence and was going to attack no matter what? Please remember, back in 1998 your party was the one that argued for this same conflict. Funny how in 2003, when the votes were asked, not many Democrats voted No for this conflict.

Posted by: weatherbee at November 7, 2005 11:45 PM

Yah, so what if they were Chris, like I've said a thousand times, even if we had found WMD's, you libs. would be harping on something else. that's what you guys were born to do. the WMD's go alot deeper than just having nukes, but you guys can't see that! Why? cause you don't want too. What really chaps your hide though is that there is a large population in this country that was ready to go to war with So dam insane long before your sorry asses could be convinced, oh wait not convinced, that's right drowned out would be the proper response.

Its not a Democrat / Republican battle issue like you want it to be. If a Democrat or Republican President misleads he misleads ALL Americans. This isn't about Clinton so please so please quit beating that old dead horse.
It isn't so much the intelligence that was the issue, it was the way the administration used the intelligence to sell the war.
Did any of you actually take the time to read what the Downing Street Minutes (memo's) say?
I would recommend that you put your partisan protect the President at all cost mentality on the back burner and look at this issue as concerned American citizens.
You assume I am a liberal because I demand accountability.

Posted by: chris at November 8, 2005 12:37 AM

Chris,

The intel used to justify the liberation of Iraq in 2003 was the same intel used to justify Clinton's bombing of Iraq in 1998...and used to justify the Iraq Liberation Act of that same year. It was the intel - and the intel was good; only revisionist lefties are saying that it wasn't good.

As for the Downing Street Memos, we did read them...heck, if you check back into our archives, you'll find them linked to and quoted from...they don't say what leftwing, paranoid conspiracy-theorists think they say. You have to approach them with an ignorance and a blinding hatred of President Bush to think that they say any derogatory about President Bush.

Matt,

I think it's paramount that you permanently post these 3 (soon to be 4) independent reports at the top of B4B. Repete the truth. Repete the truth. Repete the truth. Eventually, the truth will sink in and take hold.

Posted by: Freedom1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 8, 2005 05:51 AM

"repeat" not "repete" PIMF argh!

Posted by: Freedom1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 8, 2005 05:54 AM

Its not a Democrat / Republican battle issue like you want it to be.

Your right, it's a liberal- conservative battle issue, and it shouldn't be. I abbhor the fact that you libs. don't respect where your freedoms come from. We even give you the opportunity not to have to go out there and fight yourselves, but no that's not enough. You want to take invalid, unfounded monkey wrenches and throw them in the mix, and without a second thought about the extra lives it may cost. I WOULD LIKE TO SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS and have the msm pay attention to me like they do liberal talking points, IT'S YOUR FAULT AS MANY MEN HAVE DIED TO DATE. If there was the unity of voice and country like there was after 9/11 we would have finished this war already. But know everywhere we turn is a dam liberal spouting off about WMD's, or Torture or Troop strenght, or Oil, or Misleading or whatever!
