ANNOUNCEMENT: Matt Margolis & Mark Noonan get a book deal!

November 11, 2006
Veteran's Day

It started out, of course, as Armistice Day; the remembrance of the end of the First World War on November 11, 1918. Over the years it changed and evolved and it was only in 1954 that an act of Congress made it official - a day we set aside each year to remember those who have served our country in uniform.

Here in 2006, it is especially important that we remember. Right now, gi\ven the result of the week and some of the political rhetoric which lead up to it, the troops are looking over their shoulder, wondering if we here at home are going to back them to victory, or not. Our very best and bravest are giving their all for the cause of liberty and the United States of America - it is altogether right and fitting that we should carry those brave men and women in our hearts today But, more than that, we should re-assure them at every turn that we won't let them down - that we won't let their sacrifices be in vain.

Words can never describe just what it means to be in the service of one's country, and no benefit of a grateful people can ever repay the debt owed to those who serve - but each of us, as best we can, must do what we can to let those who serve know that we remember them, that we support them, that we pray for them and wish their efforts to be crowned by victory.

Take a little time today to remember them all - past and present. Perhaps go here and see if you can do something to help out; but, mostly, just remember - never break faith with those who have put on your country's uniform.

We should ALL take the time to remember our vets without taking swipes at the other party! This isn't a political issue, this is an American issue!

It just shows how angry, bitter, and petty you are that you need to attack the democratic process this week because you don't agree with the results. . .

God Bless our veterans, keep them safe, and bring them home safely as soon as possible!

God bless our brave men and women, both past and present and to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to defend freedom and allow others to have the freedoms so many Americans take for granted. A special thank you to my father, who served his country for 24 years in the AF. You're the best, dad!

Just like to say thankyou to all my fellow veterans, especially the crews I served with on the USS Flint, USS Vincennes and USS Tarawa, the Marines I served with from the Tarawa during 'Just Cause', all my vet relatives and my Marine old man of course.

A special rememberance for my grandfather Albert (Andy) and my great uncle Alfred (Tony) who fought in World War I in Company M, 348th Infantry.

"If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in English, thank a soldier."

I am lucky to be with my family this week, taking my son to visit his great-grandfather, who he is named after. Grandaddy was stationed on the island of Eniwetok in the Navy during the War. Thanks to him and all the other brave men and women, they laid the foundation for us to stand alone as the leader of the free world after the fall of the Soviet Union.

And much gratitude, love and prayers to our men and women who are serving as we speak, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. We all love and support you and can never repay your debt to our nation.

I too add my thanks to all my fellow Veterans. As a way of saying thank you, I have posted a personal dedication too all Veterans on my blog, Right in a Left World: Brave Men, Dedicated to My Fellow Veterans.

Additionally, under that post is a link to a very moving and inspiring song dedicated to Canadian Veterans, A Pittance of Time.

If you have never seen it or desire to see it again, please visit, have kleenex handy. It moves me to tears each time I see it.

Thank you, LTB, for your service!

coulterfan,

Supporting the troops means supporting them to absolute victory. Period. End of story.

No, you can't have it any other way - it is work for victory, or be a traitor.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 11, 2006 12:55 PM

I posted my thanks on the link Mark gave above, but I will recap here as well. Thank you to every soldier who ever has or is serving the cause of keeping America free and safe(r). I write this as I watch renewed training at Offutt, with the runway now re-opened. I wish God's blessing on all of our troops and their families, without them, we would live in a very different world.

"Supporting the troops means supporting them to absolute victory. Period. End of story.

Thankfully for America, we know that just because a Radical Rightwing hatemonger says something doesn't make it true.

The late, great brave Pat Tillman and his brother did not support the war in Iraq, but they were great soldiers and patriots, and Pat gave his life in Afghanistan.

It's completely possible to support and love the brave American troops while acknowledging that their leadership has failed them at almost every turn. No body armor, no up armored Humvees, cuts in pay, cuts in benefits, poor strategy, not enough troops.

Victory cannot be one by an outside party in a civil war. That's a simple fact. Either we stay there and send more troops to pacify the country, or we let the Shias and the Sunnis fight it out. The Sadr army will not follow us to America, no matter how many times Cheney says so.

And we need to redeploy our troops, not to Okinawa, but back to Afghanistan so that we can take the Taliban out for good this time.

Mark, you do not have the monopoly on truth, but you're as hateful as any person I've ever encountered. I feel truly sorry for you that you hate your fellow Americans so deeply. I ask all of you here one question:

If you had the chance to put a bullet in the head of a liberal American or an Al Qaeda terrorist, which would you choose?

Posted by: DougW [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 11, 2006 05:11 PM

Your question of choosing a terrorist over a liberal American is ... well, plain ignorant. Of course, we would choose the liberal, silly.

Just kidding.

I don't believe you're joking, and that's sad for America, Kimberly.

Posted by: DougW [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 11, 2006 05:51 PM

There you go assuming again, Dougie. Tsk. Tsk.

You have to admit, that was a pretty dumb question to ask.

Posted by: kimberly4bush [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 11, 2006 05:59 PM

“Mark, you do not have the monopoly on truth, but you're as hateful as any person I've ever encountered.”

You do not need a monopoly on the truth to profess it, it is for all to see, have and hold.

Doug, you’ve actually encountered some people far more hateful than you believe Mark to be, you just don’t recognize them. It could be that you are just like them but I doubt it. What I really suspect is that they’ve confused you, blinded you to a lie and portrayed it as the truth. People buy it every day unfortunately. Only when they are far down the wrong road do they even realize it.

Some people call this the information age. I call it the disinformation age. For most every piece of information you put forth with a certain point of view, others can show 2 with an opposing point of view. Things are not what they seem. Evil knows VERY well how to manipulate your thoughts and emotions. Those with evil intent know the play book and push every trigger button they need to accomplish their goals.

If you really believe Mark is hateful, then you are spiritually blind. The only question I would have if I were allowed to ban someone like you from this blog is whether I thought you were just a blind person with a chance to see your mistakes or if you were a person so filled with hate that evil deeds are your only intent.

I thank the Lord for people like Mark, because Mark lives his Christian life with a devotion to God. God will use his good deeds to open the eyes of the blinded an light the way to truth. Perhaps you will see one day.

Is it?

OK then.

For whom do you hold the most hate in your heart, liberals or terrorists? Would you weep if terrorists blew up the ACLU headquarters?

Posted by: DougW [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 11, 2006 06:33 PM

OI OI... and the thread started off so well. What to do, what to do, reply to Doug who ignores my answers anyway or be nice and celebrate the veterans? Hmm....

I'd like to thank all of the men and women currently serving in the US military, the Japanese SDF, the Brittish Military, the Canadian Military, the French Foreign Legion, the Tiawaneese Army, the South Korean military, The Iraqi Military, The Israeli Military, and others. Your current efforts are not in vain and I for one appreciate your work.

I'd especially like to express my gratitude to my Grandfather (God Rest his Soul) who was a Sea Bee in WWII, my uncle Peter who was in the Air Force, and my brother who is currently serving as a Navy Corpsman. Add to that list I thank all of the fine men and women I've met out here at Fort Irwin, especially those who work in the Medical and Fire services since I have a special affection for those brave souls.

To you, I salute you!

*Salute!*

Gotta Vent. I don't know where else to turn, but this football stuff is just eatin' me up.

To all of you Charlie Brown conservatives, here goes:

First -- Cowboys on Sunday have to find a unique way to grab defeat from the jaws of victory by way of the "Oh it wasn't really a 15-yard face mask penalty but we'll call it that way" call.

OK. I'm a man. I realize human beings make bad calls during the 4th-quarter-heat-of-battle-but-let's-let-Cowboys-earn-this-one mentaility.

Second -- And then today, when my Aggies have it won...like in "just-lay-down-and-don't-do-anything" won, one of our guys jumps up and bumps into the passer.

Arrrrrgggghhhhh

They take 2 plays to turn a 6-point deficit into a 1-point win. And all we had to do was lay down.

Arrrrrgggghhhh. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Just like the Senate Republicans.

Your a fu..ing idiot then Doug(and I don't use words like that lightly)!

God bless the faithful and those filled with FAITH for this country! They fight and defend what was entrusted to us even when we don't!
God help America & God bless America!

"For whom do you hold the most hate in your heart, liberals or terrorists? Would you weep if terrorists blew up the ACLU headquarters?"

DougW--

This is the basic problem with liberals. You want to interject "feelings" into every situation.

To answer your question, it's not a matter of "hatred". It's a matter of defending this country from the attack of terrorists who would just as soon behead you as not. Those people in the ACLU are Americans and should be protected from terrorist attack, PERIOD. Liberals would want this treated as a "law-enforcment" issue, but those of us who have taken an oath to defend this country and it's Constitution would rather hunt them down and destroy them. Hate is not even an issue...protecting this country is.

I don't personally know you DougW, but rest assured I don't hate you nor those in the ACLU. While we may not agree on political issues, you are my fellow American and I will protect you at the cost of my life if necessary. This is the oath I swore before God.

Would you ever consider remembering a veteran if he were a liberal?

Posted by: Lomstradamus at November 12, 2006 09:16 PM

DM,

Thanks for the vote of confidence - please pray for me that Our Lord will show me every day how to write better...meaning, how to write with more charity and love in my heart. I err often - often I am too harsh, too ungenerous.

Texas,

That is something I think they just refuse to understand - they feel that our opposition to them must be motivated by hatred, because their opposition to us is so motivated. They just don't want to understand that our opposition to them is rooted in our desire for what is best for them, for us, for everyone.

Sorry, I wanted to post this earlier but I was out of town. I teach at a private high school in Wisconsin. On Thursday, our student body planned a Veteran's Day service and invited vets for breakfast and recognition. The theme of the service was "Welcome Home". Our student body president acknowledged the fact that some of our vets had not been properly welcomed home. At the end the vets had their own"ticker tape" parade around the gym lead by an honor guard. I wish everyone had been able to see the looks on the faces of the vets. There were a thousand screaming teenagers and faculty, waving flags and throwing confetii. A band was playing. Some of the vets were in tears, some looked stunned...there were a lot of smiles and waves as they moved around the gym. There was a "shortcut" for those vets in wheelchairs and walkers. Not a single vet took the shortcut...they all made the trip around the gym. It was one of the most moving experiences I have had in my life. This was all planned and executed by our students, so there is hope for the next generation. God bless you vets and welcome home.

Regarding Lew Waters link to the video "A Pittance of Time", I don't know if anybody else had the same problem, but clicking on the link 'A Pittance of Time' did not work for me. Neither following the route of clicking on his name got the video to play.

However if you click on the Typekey icon, it gets you to his blog, just scroll down a bit and you will see the posting with the video. It is worthwhile to do it.
