Matt, thanks for reminding me about the time change. Indiana finally got with most of the rest of the country (all but Arizona and Hawaii, I think) last fall and decided to observe DLST. For the last 30+ years we had simply been on EST all year around, which I had always kind of liked. I must admit, however, that it was nice being able to walk the dogs this summer at 9 or 9:30 in the evening and still have daylight.

Now I remember switching the clocks in the spring and fall when I was a kid. My folks had an alarm clock in their bedroom; we had a wall clock in the kitchen, maybe one on the stove, one in the car and they each had a wristwatch -- probably a total of 5 or 6. Today my wife and I each have 2 wristwatches (dress and sports), a clock radio and separate alarm clock in our bedroom, a digital clock in the family room, a clock on the DVD recorder, a digital alarm clock or clock radio in each of our other 3 bedrooms, stove and microwave clocks in the kitchen, a wall clock and clock radio in my office and clocks in both cars, clocks in both our cell phones plus the clock in my computer for a total of 18 clocks. The clock in the computer is the only one that's self-adjusting for DLST. What a royal pain in the A$$.

Two Public Buses Torched in Paris Suburb

(AP) CLICHY-SOUS-BOIS, France - Police deployed 4,000 reinforcements as marauding youths torched at least two public buses Friday, the anniversary of the deaths of two teenagers that ignited weeks of riots in largely immigrant housing projects across France.

After the buses were burned, Paris’ transport authority curtailed bus service in the Seine-Saint-Denis region north of the capital, which is home to thousands of immigrants and their French-born children.

Thierre Ange, a 19-year-old witness, said four men attacked the bus, “made everyone get off, then they hit a woman and dragged out the bus driver by his tie” and torched the bus with a gasoline bomb in a bottle. The blackened carcass of another bus that was burned earlier stood across town in Le Blanc Mesnil.

Ongoing 'Intifada' in France has Injured 2,500 Police in 2006

Worldtribune.com: (10/27/2006) This might have dropped below the radar, but Al Qaida and its allies are literally battling the Crusaders every day in Europe. And so far, Europe isn't doing so well. "We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists," said Michel Thoomis, secretary general of the Action Police trade union. "This is not a question of urban violence any more. It is an intifada, with stones and firebombs."

The French Interior Ministry has acknowledged the Muslim uprising. The ministry said more than 2,500 police officers have been injured in 2006. This amounts to at least 14 officers each day. The battles have been under-reported but alarming to French authorities. Muslim street commanders, who run lucrative drug networks, have organized youngsters in housing projects to ambush police and confront security forces. The response time allows hundreds of Muslims to storm police cars and patrols within minutes.

"You no longer see two or three youths confronting police," Thoomis said. "You see whole tower blocks emptying into the streets to set their comrades free when they are arrested."

France's huge Muslim minority community has come under the influence of agents often influenced and financed by Al Qaida. These agents have recruited Muslim youngsters for urban warfare in which police and government representatives are injured daily.

Not surprisingly, Muslim neighborhoods are becoming autonomous zones, with police and government workers too scared to enter. The police union is demanding the Interior Ministry supply officers with armored cars.

European law enforcement sources say France could be a model for other countries. The most worried are Britain and the Netherlands.

I used to know this guy who refused to observe DST. He would never change his watch, he said it was just plain wrong. Not sure how he got where he was supposed to be on time, though. He had other odd behavior, and unfortunately for him, he took a lot of ribbing. I imagine his six month nightmare is coming to an end this Sunday.

French Intifada II: Woman Severely Burned in Bus Attack

PARIS (Reuters) - A woman in the southern city of Marseille suffered severe burns when vandals set fire to a bus she was traveling on, a police source said on Saturday.

The attack occurred as France marked the first anniversary of riots that scarred the country’s poor suburbs, inhabited largely by immigrants. Vandals have set at least six buses on fire in suburbs around Paris this week in an upsurge of violence ahead of the anniversary, but there have been no injuries.

The police source said an unknown number of people forced their way on to the bus in Marseille at about 9.00 p.m. (1900 GMT) and set fire to it before a 26-year-old woman could escape. “The woman’s life is in danger,” the source said.

Three other people needed treatment for smoke inhalation.

Al Qaeda Threatens Canada: Quit Afghan mission or endure attack like 9/11, threat says

National Post: OTTAWA - An al-Qaeda strategist has warned Canada to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan or face terrorist attacks similar to 9/11, Madrid and the London transit bombings.

The threat, attributed to a member of the al-Qaeda information and strategy committee, condemns Prime Minister Stephen Harper for refusing to pull out of Afghanistan. It also refers to Canada’s “fanatic adherence to Christianity” as well as its purported attempts to “damage the Muslims” and its support for the “Christian Crusade” against al-Qaeda.

“Despite the strong, increasing opposition to spread its forces in the fire of South Afghanistan, it seems that they will not learn the lesson easily,” Hossam Abdul Raouf writes. “They will either be forced to withdraw their forces or face an operation similar to New York, Madrid, London and their sisters, with the help of Allah.”

The document, written in July, was obtained and translated by the SITE Institute, a U.S. non-profit group that monitors terrorist Web sites for clients, many of them in government. It is the second reference in recent weeks to al-Qaeda singling out Canada because of its role in Afghanistan.

Youths Burn HUNDREDS of Cars in FRANCE

Six police were injured and 47 people were arrested, ministry officials said. Still the Interior Ministry described the night as "relative calm," noting that up to 100 cars are torched by youths in troubled neighborhoods on an average night.

Police had braced for a bigger replay of violence in the poor suburbs predominantly made up of Muslims from former French colonies in Africa. Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the deaths of two teens that ignited three weeks of riots in 2005.

The rioting was fueled by anger at France's failure to offer equal opportunities to many minorities — especially Arabs and blacks — and France's 5 million-strong Muslim population.
