Now this is interesting, Reuters reports that the case of a New York attorney Lynne Stewart, who was convicted of aiding terrorism "has prompted debate among U.S. lawyers about whether the Bush administration wants to scare them away from representing terrorist defendants."
Lynne Stewart was convicted in February 2005 of helping a client smuggle messages to militant followers and is to be sentenced on Monday. She faces more than 15 years in prison.
"Her case is an example of the way in which the government is equating individuals who represent terrorists with terrorists themselves -- that language of 'if you're not with us you're against us'," said Rachel Meeropol of the Center for Constitutional Rights.
"It's a scare tactic," she said. "It is worrisome that attorneys might become less able to represent out of fear of being prosecuted."
But Fordham University Law Professor James Cohen says Stewart "unquestionably broke the law" and the case would not deter other lawyers representing terrorism-related suspects.
I'm sorry, but since when does representing suspected terrorists equal helping them commit acts of terror? The conviction ought to a signal not to aid terrorists, yet somehow people can put an anti-Bush spin on it.
Never mind the fact that justice was served.

Lynne Stewart got a 28-month wrist slap for aiding a terrorist. She should have received years not months in prison for aiding and abetting a terrorist. However, justice was done to one of Stewart’s co-conspirators. He-a Muslim- got sentenced to 24 years in prison.

It is clearly targeting Muslim students and treating them to a higher level of suspicion and scrutiny. It sounds like you’re guilty until you’re proven innocent,” Wakkas Khan, president of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, told The Guardian.

Independent Online Edition-Europe: Police had to use their firearms to escape from a gang of youths who allegedly ambushed and stoned a police car in a suburb north of Paris at the weekend - the fourth incident of its kind in recent weeks. One policeman was seriously injured by stones hurled by youths. His two colleagues fired their weapons over the heads of gang members in a housing estate in the normally calm suburb of Epinay-sur-Seine. Their patrol car was trapped when a driverless vehicle was rolled behind it by a group of up to 50 youths, according to police.
The incident is one of several serious clashes between police and youth gangs across Paris suburbs in recent weeks as the anniversary of last year’s riots approaches. Previous incidents, described as “ambushes” by the police, have later proved to be more confused and unplanned. Right-wing politicians claimed yesterday that there was a co-ordinated campaign to provoke an incident and raise tensions.
In the most recent incident, on Friday night, a police car was sent to investigate reports of muggings in the Ogrement district of Epinay, a poor area haunted by drugs gangs and sporadic violence. It wasn't moveon.org. The Open Society Institute made a donation in 2002 to the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee. The grant was made before Stewart's misconduct was revealed at her 2005 trial

Her acts were criminal, and she got off because she was one of the liberal elite who no doubt, rubs elbows with the judge at various left-wing events and fundraisers.
How many other guilty people got harsher sentences from this judge, for far lesser crimes?
This is the reason that terrorists will continue to operate; because soft-headed judges like this will dominate the bench and issue rulings like this.

Stewart was NOT convicted of "defending a terrorist". She was convicted of helping him continue his terrorist activities while he was in custody for other terrorist acts. She was a willing accomplice to terrorist planning, acting as a conduit between her client and his terrorist cell.
And I do not believe that anyone who defends her is really unclear on this. The determination to simply misrepresent the truth in hopes of fooling a few people and scoring a few anti-government points should be a huge red flag to anyone who cares about truth, on either side of the aisle. These people know they are lying.
