ANNOUNCEMENT: Matt Margolis & Mark Noonan get a book deal!

September 14, 2006
Air America Bankrupt

Entirely unsurprising - and, of course, it doesn't mean that Air America will go away...they'll probably figure some way to convert themselves in to a non-profit, and thus become essentially subsidized by the American taxpayer.

Still: grab a clue, lefties - no one likes your product. Smart people, at this point, would start to rethink their views a bit.

I have been listening to them on XM recently. The good thing about AirAmerica, you are not interrupted by lots of pesky commercials, they just talk and talk. They also get your blood boiling moreso than those preaching to the choir.

"Smart people, at this point, would start to rethink their views a bit."

For someone claiming to advice smart people, that's about the dumbest conclusion one could draw from Air America's bankruptcy filing.

their already is a publicly subsidized liberal radio station, NPR.

I'm thinking it will probably become a Soros subsidized station if it isn't already.

According to Air America, this is just a rumor. This site's been making fun of them since they started and jumping on any chance that they are failing. They are still around though (or so they say), and they still have listeners.

I think the fact that they aren't doing better is not about their "product" or anything like that. It's just a long held front line for Conservatives. Saying Air America is failing because radio listeners don't like their product is like saying Hollywood is so liberal because nobody likes your product, Mark.

Progressive radio is just relativly new and is getting more popular over time. But don't you guys worry too much. You'll still get to hear Rush Windbag spew his hate over the airwaves.

Posted by: Adam at September 14, 2006 10:16 AM

it's not the product, it's the medium. might explain why the left owns the net.

Posted by: orangealert [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2006 10:47 AM

The Right spent millions and many years to build up a radio product - progressive talk is just in its infancy. It is ridiculous to expect that it will become an overnight sensation.

It is also silly to conclude that the financial woes of AirAmerica radio indicate that the progressive format is dead. If you remember, Rush Pig-Boy Limbaugh had a TV show in the early 90's that flopped miserably. That was not the end of Rush (unfortunately).

It is about time progressives finally started using the radio medium - it is by far the best way to reach the "heartland", as we have seen. Not everyone has a computer or internet access, especially in more rural areas. All across middle America, all you hear across the radio dial is almost non-stop wingnut hate propaganda with no balancing point of view - is it any wonder then that folks there have the views that they do? When only one side of the story is told, it leads to some rather warped thinking, as is exhibited on this blog.

So AirAmerica is learning some good lessons here. First, I think they made some bad decisions in hiring celebs who have no experience in radio. Folks like Jeaneanne Garofalo, Jerry Springer, Al Franken. Instead, they should have stuck with expensive and inexperienced Hollywood and TV celebs, but with folks who had already established successful syndicated radio shows - people like Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartman who have been in radio for many years. Unsurprisingly, those two real radio pros regularly kick Limbaugh's ample butt in head to head ratings.

So, but for a few bad management decisions, AirAmerica would probably be doing much much better. In any case, it's going to take a few years to wrest the airwaves back from the wingnuts. But the tide is definitely turning. After 6 straight years of 100% Republican misrule and incompetence in all branches of governemnt, people are looking for a new direction. And you wingnuts know it. So go ahead and gleefully twitter on about AirAmerica's financial woes - it won't hide your political woes come November.

"people like Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartman who have been in radio for many years. Unsurprisingly, those two real radio pros regularly kick Limbaugh's ample butt in head to head ratings".

You're kidding right? Limbaugh draws 22million listeners a week. In New York(which is a huge liberal city) Air America barely registers in the top ten, while Limbaugh is #1 in a liberal market. People tune into these shows for truth and sensibility. Air America(conspiracy radio) doesn't sell because they can't pull the aluminum foil hat wearing crowd away from their computers long enough to listen.

I couldn't have said it better myself, npfl.

The leftist response to the pending bankruptcy of Scare America is really amusing. Like their election losses they look at it as some kind of victory.

Don't the dems claim to have 50% of America in their camp? That must be the 50% that don't listen to the radio.

Fact is, in the marketplace of ideas, Scare America couldn't sell many tinfoil hats. Advertising dollars are what support radio, and its clear that with no marketshare, few advertisers were willing to advertise with these wackos.

Scare America has lasted this long only on the subsidies of Soros and other multi-millionare liberals who desperately want power.

The really amusing part is that Hanoi Jane is now starting a lefty radio station directed at women. This will have the effect of further dividing their listner base and lowering their ratings.

Bwahahahahahahahaha!!!!

Infancy? Alan Dershowitz and Mario Cuomo had left-of-center radio talk shows more than 10 years ago; no-one listened. (sc)Air Amirica was just the latest incarnation of dismal depressing idea that "we are what's wrong with America; that our national, cultural, and personal woes stem from taxes too low, affirmative action too meek, defense too strong, and illegal aliens too few." (Jay Severin, 3/30/2004)

This is simple market economics.

Liberals have CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, the NY Times, LA Times. the Washington Compost, etc to get their news from liberal sources.

There are so many liberal sources of news that Air America is just one more entry in the market.

This is also why FOX and conservative radio does so well...because they offer a different perspective to the mainstream media.

So many of us predicted this and said the very same thing when Air America launched and of course liberals screamed that the MSM wasn't liberal....wrong again kids.

I listen to AA...along w rush, oreilly, rome, etc.

I want alot of perspective & sources.

I still don't trust govt.

Just because Gore invented the Internet doesn't mean the left owns it. Silly boy!

Posted by: kimberly4bush [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2006 05:11 PM

"The Right spent millions and many years to build up a radio product" Oh so wrong.

The public spent millions buying the products advertised on talk radio. That led to more talk radio. The conservatives haven't spent a dime propping up an artificial grass movement like Scare America.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2006 05:38 PM

Air America has no audience because they usually do what most liberals do not do. They speak truthfully about their liberal beliefs that are cowardly (cut & run out of Iraq), they want everyone to vote including convicts and illegal aliens and they have so many anti-American beleifs that when they speak their liberal truth they so annoy the listener they get no significant ratings. The successful lib politicians only get elected when they hide their liberal beleifs. Air America and the Jeaneane Garafolo's of the world need to stay on the left coast and preach to their own anti-American left choir. I predict this November conservatives like Bush who stick to their core values will do better at the polls then the drive by media keeps predicting. If your a conservative this November go out and get a friend to vote. If your a lib go somewhere and protest rhe war that day or whatever you all do.

I went and read the comments over at Think Progress--the moonbats over there are better writers and more intelligent than the trolls who infest this blog.

Hell, my miniature schnauzers are more intelligent than the trolls who infest this blog...

Miniature schnauzers? I resemble that...

keefer, don't insult the schnauzers by comparing them to the leftist trolls on this blog. Those dogs started out smarter than any of the trolls could ever hope to become.

joysey, you nailed it. Air America is upfront and unapologetic about their hatred of America, their hatred of Bush, their hatred of Cheney and Rove and all conservatives, and their dependence on hatred. I listen every now and then, because I think it's important to know what is going on on the Dark Side, and it is excruciating. It makes me want to boil my radio.

Once upon a time, after extensive knee surgery and being on too many drugs to be able to read, I tried to watch soap operas on TV. I learned that I could not watch a specific show for six months and when I tuned in, Marie was still trying to figure out who was the father of her sister's baby, which would evidently not be born for at least another year.

I find listening to Airhead America to be much the same. I can be gone for weeks and when I tune in Ranty Rhodes she is still whining the same adenoidal singsong mantra. It never changes. There are slight differences in content---she has been preaching the Dem response to their expected losses in November, by explaining to her mouth-breathing groupies that "you know, like, exit polls are like 99.9% accurate" so their big plan is to saturate the polling places with exit pollers who will get the, like, you know, nearly 100% accurate reports of how people REALLY voted to PROVE that the voting machiness are rigged because, you know, like Diebold is like, you know, right in Bush's POCKET and the machines are all rigged to shift honest Democratic votes over to the wicked Republican side and they have the plan to prove this, la da di da di da di da di da.

To show you what it takes to be a true Airhead, these fellow travelers seem to truly believe that it is more impossible to tamper with the results of a bunch of check marks on a Big Chief tablet, entered by ardent radical activists, than it is to determine whether or not software is written to cheat voters. I recently had one agree that yes, it is very possible to enter and reprogram the mainframe from a touch screen in a voting booth. Of course, he heard this on Ranty Rhodes.

And Alf Ranken is still backing up every goofball invention of his with the same refrain ---- "it's all right there in the Deulfer Report". As if....

When you have an entire network that simply cannot attract advertisers and which depends on a lethal combination of gullibility and simple stupidity to keep its limited audience, which you feed nothing but lies and hatred, you can't be surprised to see them flushed. Relieved, but not surprised.
