Today, The New York Times published an editorial attacking the Bush administration for touting welfare reform, harshly stating that "[a]n anniversary like this should be a time of reflection, of building on what has worked and fixing what hasn’t. A 'mission accomplished' attitude pre-empts any meaningful attempts to do just that."
Yet, just two days ago, The New York Times published an op-ed by former President Clinton touting the success of welfare reform.
The last 10 years have shown that we did in fact end welfare as we knew it, creating a new beginning for millions of Americans. … Welfare reform has proved a great success, and I am grateful to the Democrats and Republicans who had the courage to work together to take bold action. ... While we compromised to reach an agreement, we never betrayed our principles and we passed a bill that worked and stood the test of time.
Clinton highlighed various successs of welfare reform, including the fact that welfare rolls have dropped from 12.2 million in 1996 to 4.5 million today, and how caseloads have declined 54%. Welfare reform has even exceeded the expectations of experts, with 60% of mothers who left welfare finding work.

Who can be surprised at the NYT, once a newspaper but now a progaganda organ for the Left, trying to put a negative spin on one of the most productive legislations in our history?
And who can be surprised that they don't even care about consistency? They are so caught up in their new role as radical Left mouthpiece, they have fallen into the trap that all others like it have, and don't think that people are smart enough to remember what they say from one day to another. This cynical dependence on ignorance is a cornerstone of Leftist propaganda. America's neoradial Left has proven this to be an accurate assessment of either their intelligence or their concern with fact, so the NYT can hardly be faulted for going with what has been working so well.
But the truly amazing chutzpah of the article is the blatant spin put out by ol' Slick Willy:
"...I am grateful to the Democrats and Republicans who had the courage to work together to take bold action. "
Now THAT is an interesting historical perspective on what was really a severe thumping taken by the Dems as the Republicans shoved welfare reform down their throats. Clinton had no choice but to sign off on it. And now he's taking credit for it, and reformatting the whole battle as a cozy group-hug cooperative example of bipartisan cooperation. Nice spin, Bill.

The NYT hands out assignments to 2 reporters saying, "Reporter 'A', you find the angle that helps Democrats, Reporter 'B', you find the angle of this story that hurts Republicans."

one thing you'll find me in staunch agreement with - welfare reform. it was a great reform package then and i'd come out in support of additional reform now.

You have to give some credit to Mr. Bill. He voted for welfare reform after twice voting against it. (Well, actually vetoing it twice, but you get the idea.)
Anyone remember those leftwing predictions about how the reform would plunge 1,000,000 more kids into poverty? (Setting aside the question of how welfare reform would make non-poor kids poor, when you must ALREADY be poor to receive welfare, and thus affected by any reform thereto.) Do we hear any apologies from those who made that incorrect prediction? Even any admission that they were wrong?
Yeah, I know, rightwingers too have make incorrect predictions, but those are beside the point.

I give Clinton huge thumbs up for this...perhaps the best thing he did in his presidency.
The NY Times approach, however, despicable as usual.

Slicky Blue-Dress was dragged kicking and screaming to sign welfare reform, once Congress had a veto-proof majority.
Bill Clinton's a bald-faced liar, and he's still very good at it.
To support Jack-off Murtha's cut-and-run philosophy is unpatriotic. Jack-off Murtha is an old coot who should be swinging from a gallows...

Let's face it, if it wasn't for free trade and the growth of the American way of life and empire, then vast numbers of people around the world would have died or never would have been born owing to a lack of resources, technological advances, medicines and wealth resulting from our success. These impacts would dwarf any welfare reform benefits.
But you'll never hear about it from the media or the left because that would destroy their platform of lies that America and it's "capilistic pigs" are the evil ones responsible for all of the world's ills. No longer do the left's under-achievers want a share of the pie that would sustain them, but they want a bigger share without earning it. Agitate, whine, protest, and harrass is their modus operandi. But the steadfast conservative people here and in Washington won't give in. Makes me proud.
