I just received one of those mass-mailed e-mails which said, tongue in cheek,that the best thing to do with young males picked up crossing into the country illegally is to put them in the Army and let them fight for the country.

It's an acceptable path to citizenship, and better than taking care of them in some kind of confinement for a significant length of time.

But more seriously, mere confinement is not enough. It's a break, with food and a bed. True, they can't work during this time, but they weren't working back home, either. I think there has to be an additional layer of something more punitive---a work gang, perhaps. Maybe they could be drafted to work on the new walls.

But I would do retinal scans of all illegal crossing attempters, and then make a second attempt a felony, with a severe prison sentence attached as well as a proviso that this person can NEVER legally enter the country. Why waste time with gradually increasing penalties?

Merely stopping people is not enough. We have to have a penalty for getting caught that is so severe it really dilutes any possible advantage of trying in the first place. If the penalty is so trifling that a person can look at it and shrug and say "I can live with that" then it is not much of a deterrent.

Almiranta, I don't know if being severe the first time is the right thing to do to Mexicans crossing over. But I will agree that anyone caught attempting to cross illegally a second time be barred from ever coming back legally. If convicting them of a felony is what it takes, so be it, but remember - if we charge them with a felony, they get a lawyer and a day in court. And there is always the chance some bleeding heart liberal on a jury will want to aquit to prove they are "humane".

I have no problems with immigrants who come legally. Back when my great-grandparents came they had to pass inspection before being allowed to continue. What is wrong with following the rules and coming over legally? Maybe a guest worker program would be good, but real enforcement would be better.

I won't even waste the time listing the involvement I, my wife, my family, my church, my children, my friends etc. have in helping the poor(local & abroad), we support orphans, missionaries(with much more than just $), we help local homeless as well as monetary help to many third world countries. Me? I think we should do everything practical to enforce our borders. Those we do capture, put them to work paying for the cost of imprisonment and then send them back. Though if we could just turn them back at the border and not even capture them it'd be best.

If we really have a need for a migrant worker program then set one up that makes sense to all parties invovled. We need to revamp not only our hiring enforcement system (to make sure people are hiring elligable persons) but our immigration and alien worker programs. Both sides of the equation, both border protection and naturalization systems need to be fixed. Doing one or the other will not solve the problem.

Long term something needs to be done about Mexico. Either the people need to have some sort of political revolution (voting out those in power) or a more physical and bloody revolution. The whole system from top to bottom is messed up and will not stand if they are prevented from coming north. Running from the problem isn't the solution and in the long run this will have to happen.

Will we stand by and watch? I'm not sure. But I am sure that we'll help the people any way we can to help them rebuild after things calm down a bit.
