I got an e mail from Ted Kennedy today - buried in the lies and half-truths was the essential, defeatist demand of Ted Kennedy and the leftwing Democrats: "Will you join me in the call for a new direction in Iraq?".
The "new direction", of course, is towards surrender - Ted got in the habit of calling for American retreat and defeat in the 1970's, and he never lost the habit. My thinking is that when he drove off that bridge and ruined forever his Presidential prospects, he decided that if he couldn't get the top job, might as well ruin the nation. He's been working diligently on this for the past 35 years.
But while Kennedy can't get the White House, he did like the days of the Democratic Senate majority because this allowed him to be a committee chairman, with all its perks - you know, perhaps they'd keep the bars open late if Kennedy had a hearing to grandstand at for the late news cycle? So, everything he's done - America be damned - has been in the service of getting back that Senate majority...and if he's had to lie about events and slander the Administration and the military, that is a very small price to pay for a return of Democrats to power, right?
As usual, Mary Jo Kopechne could not be reached for comment.

I was pretty young during the Vietnam era, and only vaguely remember the anti-war protests. But looking from a historical perspective it's pretty easy to see what the protestors were really saying, whether they realized it or not: Hand Vietnam to the communists! Sadly, that's exactly what we ended up doing. Now, we have the updated version: Hand Iraq to the terrorists! The great irony of the "Iraq is Bush's Vietnam" canard is that it could turn out to be true - if Bush does what his critics apparently want.
Since you like to mention the still-not-commenting Miss Kopechne, I wonder if you've ever seen TV series "Investigative Reports" episode about the Chappaquidick incident. (Sorry if I got the spelling wrong.) The show's theory was that Kennedy decided that he shouldn't be seen arriving back at Edgartown with this single woman, so he got out of the car and let her drive herself back, while he would walk. Since she would have been far less familiar with the island, she (rather than he) made the wrong turn onto the wooden bridge. He would not have gone to the house near the bridge because he had walked back to Edgartown by the correct route, and would not have known until later that anything had happened to either her or his car.

I've been getting the e-mails from the DNC or whoever as well. I started replying to them, highlighting the hypocrisy in each. I especially enjoyed writing to the windbag Kennedy today, suggesting that the best "new direction" for us would be for the voters of Massachusetts to retire him!
Replying has been very theraputic, and they keep me on the e-mail list anyway!

Republicans in states that matter--stay at home in November at your own peril. For all the dissatisfaction you may have with the party, can you really afford to have the Kennedy's and Pelosi's running the country and emptying you wallets? Harry Reid-tard as majority leader? Pelosi as House Speaker, third in line for the presidency? John Conyers, chairman of the House Judicial Committee? Charlie Rangel chairing the House Ways and Means Committee? Jack Murtha, House Majority Leader?

No matter what the TV show said, Ted admitted being in the water. Remember the entire state of Mass, and certainly the media, was "owned" by Joe Kennedy at the time. Not even Walter Cronkite would have dared to refer to anything the Kennedy Machine said as "spin". Even he would have had a long walk off a short pier.

Clashes erupted in two of Iraq's largest cities on Wednesday and a bomb killed eight in the capital, highlighting the precarious security situation as U.S. and Iraqi forces try to stem sectarian violence.
Armed gangs fought a pitched battle with Iraqi forces for more than an hour in Basra, Iraq's second largest city where Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki declared a state of emergency two months ago.

Xango - I wasn't trying to do any "research", just recalling something off the top of my head. Neck brace? Wouldn't that have come later, after the proper authorities got Teddy some medical attention? Did they determine his neck was injured or did he merely ask for one? Was he wet arriving back in Edgartown? I think it's possible that he arrived back at the hotel, found out she hadn't gotten back, learned where his car was, thought up his story of driving the car himself, and got himself wet to make it appear that he, too, had gone over the bridge. I said the show had a "theory", which I found interesting for a few reasons, but not whether I agreed or disagreed with it. Like the murder of his brother John, the "official" version is not without its own holes (such as how long it takes to swim and the time of his arrival), so we may never know exactly what happened that day. But then, it's always fun to speculate.
Jo - If I recall correctly, the whole Camelot thing was largely made up after JFK's death. Yeah, JFK and Mr. Bill are/were two of a kind. Kind of ironically appropriate for there to be a picture of the two shaking hands.

I find it funny that old Rum runner Joe picked his son Joseph jr. to be the star and he was killed in WWII. Next the mantle fell on the shoulders of war hero and PT-109 skipper Jack, who was a known womanizer, and who was assassinated in office. The next star - closer to the bottom of the Camelot barrel - was Bobby, the attorney general who carried on with Marilyn Monroe before she committed suicide and who was killed by Sirhan Sirhan - an Arab - while campaigning in LA. All that was left was the black sheep of the family, Chappaquiddick Teddy, unfaithful husband, disgraced father, and the man responsible for the death of Mary Jo.
How far Camelot has fallen and how irrelevant has become the Kennedy family. All we have left are a couple of drug-addled offspring who will never amount to anything significant and the door will be closed on this family, mercifully. Good riddance too.

Bigfoot, your naivete is astounding. This television show was clearly designed to appeal to those too young to remember the tragedy in question....and those too dumb to bother to learn the facts.
But Kennedy never denied being in the car, or being the driver. It is pretty stilly to come along so much later with some goofball theory that Mary Jo drove herself into the water and poor Teddy, "found out she hadn't gotten back" and then proceeded to do some seriously deranged things.
If he was afraid to be seen with a single woman, then why go out of his way to set up a scenario which was false: ".....thought up his story of driving the car himself, and got himself wet to make it appear that he, too, had gone over the bridge" to place himself in her company after he was home free?
No, it is NOT "fun to speculate". It is crazy to indulge in such insanity. The man drove the car. He admitted to driving the car. What is more, he got free of the car and swam away and then tried to hide his involvement in the accident, till it became impossible to do so. He did this because he was a married man who was driving drunk in a car with a single woman he had been boinking, and he didn't want this to affect his political future. So he made the decision to let her die.
Or did your fantasy show mention that she had been alive in the car and trying to escape when she drowned? Did they mention that assistance from someone else might have saved her life?
What makes Teddy Kennedy so reprehensible is that when he had to choose between letting a young woman die or being linked with her in an adulterous relationship, he sacrificed her to try to save his already shaky "reputation".
And what is so sad is that in Massachussets, he could have been boinking her on the steps of the state capitol, and he would still have been elected. Those Massholes surely do love their Kennedys. Mary Jo did not have to be sacrificed at all. Teddy's blatant drunkeness, his womanizing, his incoherence, his lack of dignity, none of these has interfered in the slightest with his reelection over and over again.
