When liberals go on their usual anti-Bush rants, a common claim they make is that GOP candidates this year are distancing themselves from President Bush because of his low approval ratings, or this, that, or whatever reason. Well, as usual, they're wrong... President Bush was stumping for Ohio gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell yesterday, helping the black conservative raise $1.5 million.
I can imagine some on the left will say "Well, that's only one candidate." But let's consider the situation further. Bush stumping for a gubernatorial candidate in Ohio is nothing to shrug off as insignificant. Ohio was the final battleground of the 2004 elections. It's a swing state. If Bush truly were a political liability for candidates this year, he wouldn't be coming to Ohio, let alone be invited to stump for a candidate in a tough race. Blackwell is also polling behind his Democrat opponent right now, if Bush were a liability he wouldn't be out there campaign for him. Period.
Whichever party wins the governor's seat in Ohio will be considered by many to have momentum to win the state for 2008. Certainly, that's how either side will spin it. Bush's ability to help Blackwell raise $1.5 million for his campaign is also something Democrats can't write off. It means that candidates can still ride Bush's coattails and reap the benefits. If he can do that in Ohio, a state some Democrats ridiculously claim was stolen from them in 2004, then he certainly can work the same magic elsewhere.
