College Grads Stuck In The Nest?

I discovered this story this morning, which reports that experts claim "between 48 and 66 percent of 2006 college grads are planning to shoot back home this year."

Reading a story like this would make someone believe that kids returning to the nest post-graduation is some new epidemic which naturally could be blamed on Bush. But, don't believe it.

I don't know what kind of "experts" were used for this story, but there's plenty of reason to be suspicious of the story since its claims contradict reports from earlier this year that said U.S. college graduates "are facing the best job market since 2001."

So, we're expected to believe that despite the best job market for graduates since 2001, as many as 2/3 of graduates are forced to live back at home due to bad job prospects?

My son, who just graduated this year from Kettering University (used to be called General Motors Institute) with an Electrical Engineering degree, had several job offers and took one he liked working for an engineering firm that is doing the engineering work for remodeling all Wal-Mart stores nationwide. He just moved into his own townhouse across town (a brand new building) with all new furniture, and he just bought a brand new car.

He's making a lot of money and travels around the country about 50 percent of the time. After he graduated this spring, he did stay with us until he settled on a job and found a place to live on his own. He's just one college grad, but all his buddies (who are all engineering grads) were scooped up even before they got out of school.

I don't see this "issue" as anything more than wishful thinking and scare-mongering by the left who are trying to convince everyone we're all poor.

I moved back home for a couple years (late 1980s) after college so I could save money on rent - although I did pay some - and buy a place. It was annoying at times, but worth it.

Mark, the Sun-Sentinel story profiled a couple of kids that HAD jobs, and the point of the article was that even given that they found jobs they were starting out in a hole due to college loans and credit card debt and having to deal with starting salaries that haven't kept pace.

Then of course there is also the panty-waist wussy factor: the little darlings can't wrap their sweet, swaddling-wrapped heads around the fact that they're going to take a life-style hit when (or if) they move out. Awww, poor things.

Get the impression I have issues? LOL!

*Chuckles*

Well back in my college years I went in and out of home once because of money issues, but I quickly moved right back out. But I don't think my situation is what they're alluding to in the article. I think they're talking about "Tweeners." (I hate that term) People who are in their twenties who are still living at home with Mom and Dad, even if they have good jobs.

There was some article on it in I think Newsweek a few months back. Weird stuff.

I don't think there is really much a president can do to control the economy.

Congratulations, you have mastered the slight of hand and can turn any issue into the fault of lefties. Come to think of it my pool guy put way to much chlorine in my pool last time, and he did have a nose ring and pony tail,,,,,,,,,damn liberals.

Hell, I gruduated from college, landed a job 23 days later at 45K a year and still lived at home for 11 months. Going from college to the real world is a huge adjustment and living at home is the best option for many.

Wow Mark, your eternal hatred for the evil left has yet again surprised me.

The article was about graduates choosing to live with their parents, despite a comfortable salaried job.

Do you see every issue through a partisan lens? Trying to come up with a way to disparage your "enemies"?

Get a frickin life...

Yeah, there's a great job market out there. There's no shortage of jobs in America. Heck, a lot of people where I live have two or three jobs! Don't buy into this false "left vs right" paradigm. Democrats and Republicans are both in the pocket of the New World Order.

Oh, they get to go home. When I finished my 4 year stint in college Uncle Sam gave me a nice warm bunk at Fort Polk, courtesy of the draft. Guess these poor kids could have it worse......
