President Bush Lays Down Some Markers

Some rather interesting statements from yesterdays press conference:

Q...Mr. President, when Secretary Rice goes back to the region, will she have any new instructions, such as meeting with Syrians?

PRESIDENT BUSH: Her instructions are to work with Israel and Lebanon to get a -- to come up with an acceptable U.N. Security Council resolution that we can table next week. And secondly, it's really important for people to understand that terrorists are trying to stop the advance of freedom, and therefore, it's essential that we do what's right and not necessarily what appears to be immediately popular...

...Q Mr. President, you spoke of having a plan to rebuild houses in Lebanon. Wouldn't the people of Lebanon rather know when you're going to tell the Israelis to stop destroying houses?

PRESIDENT BUSH: Look, we care deeply about the people whose lives have been affected in Lebanon, just like we care deeply about the people whose lives have been affected in Israel. There's over a million people in Israel that are -- are threatened by this consistent rocket attack coming out of Lebanon. And, yes, we want to help people rebuild their lives, absolutely. But we also want to address the root causes of the problem. And the root cause of the problem is you've got Hezbollah that is armed and willing to fire rockets into Israel; a Hezbollah, by the way, that I firmly believe is backed by Iran and encouraged by Iran...

...Q What about Hezbollah --

PRESIDENT BUSH: That's a part of the conditions that they'll be discussing. That's what they'll be talking about. The key is to have Lebanon agree with it. And the key is to have Israel agree with it. Those are the two parties. Hezbollah is not a state. They're a supposed political party that happens to be armed. Now, what kind of state is it that has got a political party that has got a militia? It's a state that needs to be helped, is what that is. And we need to help the Siniora government deal with a political party that is armed, that gets its arms and help from other parts of the world -- in order for Lebanon's democracy to succeed...

...Q Thank you. Mr. President, both of you, I'd like to ask you about the big picture that you're discussing. Mr. President, three years ago, you argued that an invasion of Iraq would create a new stage of Arab-Israeli peace. And yet today, there is an Iraqi Prime Minister who has been sharply critical of Israel. Arab governments, despite your arguments, who have criticized Hezbollah, have now changed their tune. Now they're sharply critical of Israel. And despite from both of you, warnings to Syria and Iran to back off support from Hezbollah, effectively, Mr. President, your words are being ignored. So what has happened to America's clout in this region that you've committed yourself to transform?

PRESIDENT BUSH: David, it's an interesting period because instead of having foreign policies based upon trying to create a sense of stability, we have a foreign policy that addresses the root causes of violence and instability.

For a while, American foreign policy was just, let's hope everything is calm, kind of managed calm. But beneath the surface brewed a lot of resentment and anger that was manifested in its -- on September the 11th. And so we've taken a foreign policy that says, on the one hand, we will protect ourselves from further attack in the short-run by being aggressive and chasing down the killers and bringing them to justice...in the long-term, to defeat this ideology, and they're bound by an ideology. You defeat it with a more hopeful ideology called freedom.

And, look, I fully understand some people don't believe it's possible for freedom and democracy to overcome this ideology of hatred. I understand that. I just happen to believe it is possible...so what you're seeing is a clash of governing styles, for example. The notion of democracy beginning to emerge scares the ideologues...

...I hear this amazing kind of editorial thought that says, all of a sudden Hezbollah has become violent because we're promoting democracy. They have been violent for a long period of time. (emphasis added)

There is a lot more in the press conference, including some excellent answers by Prime Minister Blair, but this selection is chose because:

1. President Bush isn't at all concerned with the phony, ginned-up anti-Israel/anti-American sentiment and won't have US policy governed by what ill-informed people see on TV.

2. He knows precisely who is really at fault here: Iran.

3. He knows that the immediate crisis will only be solved with a defeated and disarmed Hizbollah.

4. He knows that the battle really is about whether freedom or tyranny will prevail in the Moslem world - if freedom wins, then terrorism dies; if freedom loses, then terrorism takes over the whole world.

It really is so nice to have a President who both knows what is going on, and has the courage to act upon his convictions. Mark my words, fellow GOPers, we're going to regret not having President Bush after January 20th, 2009.

Spot on, Mark. What frightens me more than any other apsect of the current world situation is that a significant number of people (probably close to half in this country) don't believe this statement is true.

In the new policy of civility and support for the policies of President Bush on BFB, I guess you would want me to say:

Fantastic job Mr. President!! Keep up the great work - GW Bush is the greatest leader the US has ever had. The world is behind you - 100%. Except, of course, for those weak-kneed French & Canadians.

I love how he calmly answers ludicrous questions, like the houses question. Why don't they ask questions about how do we force Syria and Iran to pay for the houses destroyed.

Another thought I just had was, whose houses were they anyway? The terrorists live in these community's, so maybe...

Posted by: Porter Jervis [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 10:44 AM

What the libs do not understand is that W KNOWS what is going on. His sweeping changes in our intelligence gathering organizations have provided the basis for understanding and attacking "the root causes of violence and instability".

The libs don't understand that Hezbollah is Iran and Iran is Hezbollah. A root. We have our gardener digging up that root now.

What really frosts my grapes is that people DON'T understand that terrorists are trying hard to stop our advance of freedom's. He is going to change that. Those people must understand.

What I really like is W understands that most people share a popular point of view. Not him. He is going his own route. Not the popular one. He is going digging for those roots of instability. Like suppling Pakistan with nuculer technology and F-16's. The Pakistani leadership does not follow popular ideology either.

May God bless W's wisdom and leadership.

Porter Jervis,
I too am appalled at the idea of rebuilding these houses. As you point out, aren't the missles that hezbollah is so indiscriminately launching coming from those "homes". They wouldn't be in the Israeli's crosshairs otherwise. The Arab nations are fully and completely financially able and responsible for the "reconstruction" but one may not see that. As the palestinian says in "Munich" they (the Arab Nations ) hate us too, they just hate the Israelis more. As for Raker13, are your posts ever germaine to the threads?

Posted by: mary s [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 11:45 AM

Mary,
Why are you attacking me? Don't shoot the messenger. I was agreeing with you. Read my post again. I do not express one point of view different that what was written to start the thread. I find my post germane, both fitting and pertinent.

Posted by: raker13 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 12:14 PM

Mr. President, you spoke of having a plan to rebuild houses in Lebanon.

Is that a Haliburton contract I smell above the dead bodies and smoking homes?

Raker13,
I am sorry, I did interpret your post incorrectly! I obviously have not had enough coffee yet!! My time zone is different than the time reflected on my post.My apologies!! Mary

Opus,
How exactly does offering God's blessings on someone indicate they are a brainwashed twit? Does that insult you in some way?

Posted by: mary s [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 12:54 PM

See what you get, Raker, when you pretend to be someone you're not. Talk about eating your own. ROTFLMAO!!!!!

Raker13,
I am sorry, I did interpret your post incorrectly!

Ouch...spook, we're even.

Posted by: raker13 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 01:10 PM

Raker13,
Please translate ROTFLMAO-I don't know that one. And my apology was sincere...sorry if I caused offense.Mary

Posted by: mary s [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 01:18 PM

Mary,

I can't. I really don't know. I will be honest. I am sincerly sorry for using you to amuse myself. You seem nice and you did not offend me. You have your opinion and I have mine. I admire your interest in participating in blogs. I look forward to our coming duels. Please do what it takes to thicken your skin. Sometimes you will find others opinion and comments extremely irritating. But, I must battle for what I believe is right, and take on some of the others who post here. I do not compose or express myself anywhere near as well as most of the people here, but I do not want to give up. So, in writing that, in the words of boxing ring announcer Michael Buffer..."let's get ready to rumble......"

Posted by: raker13 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 01:31 PM

Raker13,
I'll admit(before we get ready to rumble)thatI've been told before to get thicker skin. I spent sometime reviewing some of the other threads and think I'm getting it now. So prepare for battle!LOL.Thanks for the reply. Mary

"if freedom wins, then terrorism dies; if freedom loses, then terrorism takes over the whole world."

you can't win a war with biumper sticker slogans. It takes educated, common sense thinking. All leaders should read sociology books in order to deal with terrorism. The main cause is usually poverty. If you bomb civilian infrastructure, it destoys thier economy, and then that creates more terrorists. You don't strap on a bomb and kill yourself when you have to go to work in the morning!

Posted by: Reason at July 29, 2006 01:50 PM

One question. One comment.
1) How did we get from "useless lib-dominated UN" to "Her instructions are to work with Israel and Lebanon to get a -- to come up with an acceptable U.N. Security Council resolution that we can table next week."?
2) "if freedom loses, then terrorism takes over the whole world." Mark, Terrorists CANNOT take over the world because they do not have a ruling agenda. They are AGAINST things, not FOR them. They hide in shadows and destroy things they don't like - that's all they do.
They may have the illusion of making people obey them, just like the Mafia, or any other criminal organization. They may appear to make rules and enforce them - but they do not RULE.
Every person in the world would have to bow their heads to these people before they would win. That will never happen.

Mary S ROTFLMAO = Rolling on the floor laughing my a** off! There are a lot of these on the net and are typically used to shorten an expression. LOL = laughing out loud... and so on.

Posted by: DM at July 29, 2006 02:06 PM

Opus-

Please stop posting the same thing in every blog post. It's quite annoying, and has nothing to do with the topic.

Posted by: RushBaby [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 02:33 PM

Mary, it stands for "rolling on the floor, laughing my a$$ off. The things you learn on blogs, heh.

You are a breath of fresh air, I must say. Interesting that you should show up at a time when a couple of the fringe Lefties decide to engage in some well disguised satire.

Posted by: Retired Spook [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 03:10 PM

RS,
Your assistance has been greatly appreciated. As for some of the disquised satire, I will be more careful in my identification of such...you know when I was posting my apology I kept thinking about what Raker13 has posted on the thread regarding Mark's statements regarding blog ettiquette and it threw me off a little, but I hope I'm a little wiser now! And hope you don't mind if I think of you as my B4B mentor! Mary

Posted by: mary s [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 04:43 PM

hey raker13:

the libs do not understand is that W KNOWS what is going on.

Raker, did you not know. Bush is the decider, he's the knower, koo koo ka choo.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 04:45 PM

RushBaby,
You said it! I am too growing weary of Opus'repetitive statement.

Posted by: mary s [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 04:46 PM

And hope you don't mind if I think of you as my B4B mentor!

I'm flattered. When I first discovered B4B about 2-1/2 years ago, Rev, Scaramonga was my mentor. So, in a sense, you're learning from someone who learned from the Master, heh.

"Terrorists CANNOT take over the world because they do not have a ruling agenda.:

You are technically correct, but I think you've forgotten an important element. The terrorist attacks in Israel are being supported by STATES like Iran and Syria.

Here's how they could gain control of the world: the terrorists could severly damage the US with a series of attacks that bring about an economic collapse and severely damage the infrastructure. Sound far fetched? I don't think so. If the terrorists ever figured out a way to attack the computer systems in this country, the US would fall from the super-power ranks pretty quickly. And if that ever happened, then these states that support the terrorists could make a move for domination without having to worry about much resistance (the UK and Australia would put a fight but without the US they wouldn't last long). Granted, all this would have to be a co-ordinted attack but it is possible.

Therefore, I am grateful we have a President who understands this.

RS,
Alright! got my thinking cap on. I have also enjoyed Rev's post very much, he does have a way of putting things! I know this can't happen on a blog site, but both your names suggest a very interesting past and your input suggests a great deal of understanding of the present, past and future world affairs. So since it wouldn't be "safe" to share personal info on a blog I will settle for learning from your posts.
Freedom1-whoa, went to that web site, had no idea there were so many!!Will probably have to refer to it for a while until some of them stick-thanks for the lead!

Mary,

I don't mind sharing semi-personal information. The Rev. and I are both around 60; he lives in Missouri and I live in Indiana. We both served in the Navy in the 60's and 70's. I stayed in the Navy Reserves until I retired in 1989. My designator was signals intelligence, his was Nuclear Power. If you want to learn something about computers, he is your guy.

The biggest things Rev. Scaramonga and I share in common is that we're both news and political junkies and we're on the same page politically and philisophically about 99% of the time. He's retired so he gets to spend more time on it than I do. I still have a day job for a few more years.

Hope that gives you a little insight.

mary s,

In case you didn't know it, you can stop by my blog if you'd like. RS has posted there and leaves comments too.

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 30, 2006 12:58 PM

Rev and Rs,
That is very interesting. I too will share a little. I am a 39 year old RN, now with hospice. I enjoy my patients very much, and have developed some of my best relationships with the WWII vets I have cared for, one recently told me in detail of his mission in the Phillipines, can't repeat on the blog what he said about the "japs" as he called them. Some of their stories have brought me to tears. I can only hope I am offering them some comfort and solice in their last days. I live in Oklahoma with my husband and 2 kids, 3 dogs and 3 cats!! I knew I was a true Reagan Republican when my parents went to his innauguration in 1980, I was crushed because I couldn't go with them. President Reagan sent me back a note that was so kind and eloquent, I developed a little crush on him, I was 13! I've raised my kids so far, to think for themselves, and much to my delight they are very conservative and good kids. So much for my story! Will visit your sites to continue my education!!

Posted by: mary s [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 30, 2006 01:42 PM

I live in Oklahoma

Small world. I lived in the OKC (worked at the FAA Aeronautical Center) area from 1982 until 1991 and then again from 1994 until 2001 when I moved to Michigan. After 4 years in the Great White North, we now live in Missouri, which I am really starting to love.

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 30, 2006 02:22 PM

Rev,
No kidding! I'm in the second largest city in OK-trying to be discreet, for those in RIO LINDO.
My husbands training is in avionics and aeronautical engineering. Just an interesting tidbit Tinker AFB is named after his great uncle! Missouri is beautiful, I really enjoy the foliage there in the fall.
