Really Stupid MSM Reporting

I'm guessing that this just slipped past the editor - because the editor is a dunce, too:

The package falls short of American and Israeli demands in that it calls for an immediate cease-fire before working out details of a force and includes other conditions.

But European Union officials said Friday the proposals form a basis for an agreement, increasing the pressure on the United States to call for a cease-fire.

Israel is fighting Hizbollah terrorists, but it is up to the United States to call for a cease fire? Shouldn't that be something only Hizbollah or Isreal can do?

When we are faced with obtuse reporting like this, the task before us becomes very much harder. There is probably, among the American people, at least a segment of the population which believes that if the US snaps its fingers, Isreal will stop shooting at Hizbollah. The longer this goes on, in such a view, the more responsible the US will become for the death and destruction...and meanwhile, the chorus of demands for a "save Hizbollah's sorry butt" cease fire will grow louder. Right now, we've got a horrific terrorist group boxed in - they either have to stay where they are and be destroyed in place, or withdraw and acknowledge defeat; a crushing blow to terrorism no matter which way it comes out. But because of the stupid and inaccurate reporting on the battle, there is still a chance that Hizbollah will escape its fate - that in some manner they will not be entirely destroyed nor entirely driven away, and thus able to spin the events in to a victory as the years go by. This, in turn, means that Israel might as well start digging some graves, because they're going to need the things when the battle resumes after Hizbollah reconstitutes its forces.

This is a "one plus one equals two" sort of thing, and yet the critics of Israel just don't get it: this is war, and it will be fought to a finish, either now or in the future. It cannot end any other way.

Mark-

I don't really see why a writer writing that European officials said something is particularly obtuse.

The reporter didn't write that he, or the Associated Press, wanted to add pressure for the US to call for a cease fire; he wrote that European Union officials said that.

You should just call this post "Really Stupid European Union Officials."

Then again, we probably have the most inflience over Israeli policy out of all of the major western powers. But these people are still just advocating a temporary end to hostilities rather than a lasting peace with a disarmed or destroyed Hizbullah.

Eh, let me retract my statement, I read the quote wrong...

Still the last paragraph still applies...

Do they want us, The US, involved in the world matters, or not?

They just can not make up their mind.

Mark,

There is nothing wrong with the reporting, If the US called for Israel to seek an immediate cease-fire, then they would, y'know why? Because we are the only friend that Israel has left, not because there is someone world-wide anti-semetic sentiment, but because for all the hemmin' and hawin' that we do regarding nations who don't follow the UN resolutions, we still stand by Israel, who has ignored the world-wise calls for withdrawl from occupied territories for 40 years now.

TEO,
Israel has left the territories they had agreed to with Lebanon. The point you continue to refuse to address, is that the Arab Nations will not rest until the country of Israel does not exist. In what way does this NOT demonstrate antisemitism, in what way does the lack of support from other member countries of the UN not demonstrate antisemitism. As for the US calling for an immediate cease fire that would be disastorous for the Israelis. They should be allowed to continue until hezbollah is defeated. Remember what started this, remember who kidnapped their soldiers and transported them to Iran, remember who flew the first missle...Try again.

Yes, Mark, if we snapped our fingers Israel would stop bombing the sh*t out of Lebanon. (And as Georgia said, it is not biased reporting. It is reporting on what someone said)

We are the principle supporters of Israel. The country would have very little in the way of security without our aid. And it is clear that we are delaying a call for a cease-fire until Hezbollah is much weakened. In fact, we are supplying bombs to Israel. Our actions are pretty transparent.

Posted by: winnowhead [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2006 07:04 PM

Yeah...

Heaven forbid we let Israel tryto destroy a terrorist organization...

If the UN would enforce its own resolutions (say... disarming Hizbollah), then this war wouldn't have to happen.

Mary,

The Israelis still occupy Palestinian/Syrian lands, including the Golan Heights. Don't forget that they have occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank for 40 years. Period.

The Palestinian people have consistently been polled that they wish for a two state/unity state solution, which is about the same number as exist in Israel...so they want a peace just as much as the jews do.

Secondly, you need to update your linguistic toolbox, Syrians, Palestinians, Lebanese, Israelis are all Semetic people, they can't be anti-Semetic while advocating for their own people.

Blame rests with both sides here, Hezbollah is just as much at fault for stupid decisions as is the IDF for theirs. Stopping the bombing would only lead to less civilian deaths.

Mary,

It is best not to be seen communicating with trolls.
