This is, after all, why we elect Republican governments. You see, even if a particular Republican government starts to do some things we don't like, they will actually listen to the people and act accordingly. A lot of GOPers were upset over the border security issue, feeling that President Bush's heart wasn't in it. Be that as it may, he has got the message, and the security of the border is being improved:
The Bush administration said yesterday it has nearly ended catch-and-release on the southern border in the past few weeks, has almost tripled the number of criminal arrests this year of employers who hire illegal aliens, and will gain operational control of the border by 2008, two years earlier than expected.
"With respect to every population, except for one, we have achieved essentially 100 percent catch-and-remove," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told a House appropriations panel yesterday.
The policy of releasing non-Mexican illegal aliens and hoping they return to be deported, known as "catch-and-release," had become a symbol of how dysfunctional the immigration-enforcement system is. About 85 percent of non-Mexican illegal aliens used to be released, and few ever showed up for deportation.
But Mr. Chertoff said a recent infusion of money, President Bush's decision to have the National Guard aid the U.S. Border Patrol and a commitment to better turnaround times for deporting illegal aliens has allowed the department to detain almost all non-Mexican illegal aliens they catch. He also said it has deterred some illegal aliens from trying to cross. Catch-and-release doesn't apply to Mexican aliens, who are routinely sent back across the border.
It is that last part there where, in my view, we'll find the real solution to the border security problem - sending Mexicans back home doesn't do too much. Joe Mexican just goes home, has some dinner, gets some sleep and then tries again the next day. What we need to do is impose a high cost for illegally crossing our borders - detention is the best means of doing this. What we should be doing is holding a captive Mexican illegal for 24 hours for the first offense, 48 for the second, a week for the third, a month for the fourth, and six months for every subsequent detention. They are coming here to work, and sitting in detention for days, weeks or months will hurt severely - and discourage illegal crossing. Coupled with a guest worker program, and I think it'd willy-nilly solve the whole problem...with the added benefit that sanctions against illegal crossers will make passage of a guest worker program that much easier as the average American sees we're serious about the problem.

Your plan sounds good in theory, but where do you suppose we detain our them, our prison system is dangerously over crowded as it is... How many violent criminals are going to have to be released to make room for these aliens?

that last sentence should be a question...

Ever been to the southwest? there's PLENTY of room for tent cities. Get Sheriff Joe to set a few up.

Last October, Chertoff announce that within 12-months that DHS would end the practice of catch and release for non Mexican illegal aliens. It looks like (if the report is true) DHS met their obligation. To bad they did not meet their obligation regarding boarder security (Nat’l Guard).

Ever hear of The Posse Comitatus Act? Unless the President federalizes the National Guard, he and the DHS have no control over the National Guard:
It generally prohibits Federal military personnel and units of the United States National Guard under Federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress. The Posse Comitatus Act and the Insurrection Act substantially limit the powers of the Federal government to use the military for law enforcement.
Even the governor of California has refused to commit the troops to the effort that DHS requested and they can't do anything about it.
Congress is still fighting over the border security issue - especially the border enforcement part. Republicans in the house insist on it being done first - Democrats don't. They want citizenship for all at the same time. Republicans will eventually win this, but it is a tough fight. Democrats will fade because the people want it. It polls into the high 80 percentile when the public is asked. To be painted as an obstructionist on this issue, which most people put near the top of their priority list, is to find re-election impossible.

Yes I have, but apparently Bush hadn’t or he didn’t bother to get the commitments he needed from the Governors. Kind of in the same way the Bush administration announced that we were going to invade Iraq from Turkey (Northern front) before getting approval from Turkey. Remember that?

I didn't realize that the Nat'l Guard was required to protect boarders. But then again, you can find some seedy characters staying in boarding houses. I've never stayed in one, although I did stay in some B&B's in England. No locks on the bedroom doors. In America, if I couldn't lock my bedroom door at a boarding house, I'd want the Nat'l Guard protecting me...

You're kind of wrong, as usual, Barn. When we were building up a coalition to invade Iraq, Turkey declined to support us, so we didn't use the "Northern Front."
At least your post was readable...

You got me on that one keef. It's nice to know that you have one talent (certainly not cryptology (inside joke)) . By the way, “No locks on the bedroom doors.” Is an incomplete sentence, and you may want to modify your propensity on using “But” to start a sentence.

Keef, the news account below was from 3/5/03. The invasion of Iraq began on 3/20/03. I would say that Bush counted his chickens before they hatched.
Officials said the Defense Department has ordered U.S. Central Command to begin preparations to execute a contingency plan for a one-front war against Iraq. That front would be Kuwait and Central Command has been informed to prepare for the arrival of at least two additional divisions meant for deployment in Turkey.
"The Pentagon has written off Turkey as a second front," an official said. "There is the prospect that U.S. special forces could eventually enter Iraq from Turkish territory. But this will not comprise the second front that we had been planning."
The White House said a contingency plan that would exclude Turkey would be a viable military option. But White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said the plan, termed "Plan B," has not yet been implemented. He termed "Plan A" as that which would use Turkey as a second front.

Now there's an indictment if I ever saw one. And right on the topic of this thread too.

Keep hammering away at "Joe Mexican" you maroons. The smokescreen to sway the public's attention from other real important issues is still going to bite you in the rump. The hispanic vote will slowly but surely rise, when the sleeping giant awakens, look out you rednecks. So play it gentle like, let Ernest and Edna White keep mouthing off about them "mexicans running rampant" and absolutely ruining our american whiteness (from their trailer park). So go ahead, do something really dramatic before the elections. Poke a big stick in the hispanic eye.
They won't march. They won't protest. Or will they?

Georgia,
Tents behind razor-wire, initially...we're not talking about substantial prisons...just places we can hold people for a maximum of six months.
During WWII we set up wooden barracks and quonset huts by the tens of thousands in a pretty short amount of time - if we could stick the greatest generation in such accomodations for months on end, we can stick illegals in there as well.
