Another set of quotes. Sound familiar?
“Fools and rascals will only elect a fool and rascal for their leader, for only a fellow fool and rascal can be expected to appreciate and promote their foolish and rascally agenda.”
“Fools and rascals will never have or follow a wise program; it is their programs, their beliefs that define them. They cannot willingly or deliberately adopt a wise agenda; it is as much against their natures as it is for a fish to breathe air. Whenever they do seem to adopt a wise course, it is because they see a way to bend it to their own desires, or because they do not truly understand it.”
These quotes, by the way, are from an avowed monarchist.
“The difference between a monarchy and a democracy is as follows. To have a perfect Monarchy, you must have a man who is of impeccable moral character; a man who is an authority on all matters both within the nation and without; a man who, whatever his personal desires, does only that which benefits his nation and people. You must have a man who is forthright yet able to yield, strong yet diplomatic, who has unshakable beliefs yet honours the beliefs of others.
To have a perfect Democracy, you must have a nation of such men.(Italics mine)”

I am currently reading John Dean's book Conservatives Without a Conscience. I could almost see myself becoming a Goldwater Conservative when I grow up.

How do the conservatives on B4B feel about Barry Goldwater's writing and philosophy? I suspect he would frown on all the nastiness on this blog and in the political sphere today.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 10:04 AM

Ash, I must admit that I don't know much about it. I do personally remember the ads run against him. The child with the flower and the mushroom cloud. It was seen at the time as the first really nasty TV campaign ad.

I think that politics has always been hardball. Leading up to the civil war, some congressmen were carrying pistols into the chamber. Imagine that now?

If I remeber correctly, Nixon was seen as a moderate compared to Goldwater. His anti-drug program of treatment and education was probably the most successful to date. But no-one continued it (republican or democrat). Did you know that Nixon and JFK were close personal friends - even though they ran against each other in 1960?

“Rummy has just added four additional months of deployment to 2,500 troops.”

Correction: that should have been 3,500 troops.

America is divided into two camps: the "Lets kill everybody" camp represented by bush and his Christian fascist,neo-con,Zionist(warmonger) supporters and the "let's be rational" camp. The Left and other patriotic Americans should stand squarely behind the let's be rationale and sane position. Peace

Ash,

RE: "...all the nastiness on this blog and in the political sphere today."

Liberals [progressives] are the one who started with their incessant 24/7 hate-based propaganda. For the past five years we've heard nothing from the left other than their lies and anti-Bush, anti-America, anti-military, and anti-everything rhetoric. It's part of the liberal-way.

It's past time -- far, far past time -- for Republicans, Conservatives, and non-liberals to take the fight to the liberal left in the exactly the same manner... tit-for-tat! Call liberals, progressives, and Democrats and their propaganda, rhetoric, and agenda what they are... in plain terms they and everyone else can understand. Republicans and Conservatives have sat back and let liberals say what they please and spread their propaganda and agenda of hate in America and around the world much too long. As Mark has said before, America is in a civil war over social issues, religion, and other issues. It's time Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, and Moderates start aggressively and seriously fighting that war and play REAL HARD BALL!

The liberal hate campaign has divided America and damaged America, our image, our security, and our influence around the world. It's not President Bush who is the problem in America -- it's the liberal [progressive] left and their religion of liberalism!

Liberal [progressive] Democrats are the real threat to America. Liberals are more of a threat to America than terrorists. Liberals destroy America from within and then interfere with our efforts to fight the terrorists and enemies who have vowed to destroy us. Liberals are weak willed and weaken anything they touch or influence. If liberals and liberalism aren't stopped, they and it will destroy America and make the U.S. into a third rate nation.

Liberals want to create equality by weakening the strong rather than strengthen the weak. That's the liberal way. There is no way to compromise with a liberal because they are never satisfied until they have imposed their agenda, lifestyle, and [lack of] morals and values on everyone else!!!

I'm curious. What will victory look like in your war on Liberals?

Posted by: extramedium [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 11:26 AM

I guess this did not get posted, so now you understand the need for the correction (above).

After the Zarqawi death, there was a lot posted about how the tide had turned in Iraq (see a few select quotes below). We heard the same drivel before ( mission accomplished, Saddam captured and after countless elections) and yes, the tide has turned but into a tsunami. Since June, over 1,000 Iraqis have been killed, and Bush is planning on redeploying 5,000 soldiers to the Baghdad. Rummy has just added four additional months of deployment to 2,500 troops. How would you feel if you were preparing to return home to your wife and kids, who you have not seen in 12 months, and you learn that you got to stay for four more months. What a kick in the teeth.

“Despite the media's presentation of the war in Iraq, our successes there are undeniable, and 20-40 years in the future history will paint a different picture of George W. Bush's presidency than what many so-called "experts" today say about it.” Matt at June 12

“I have to say, I believe we are starting to see what could be a major turning on the home front over the Iraq War. The death of Zarqawi,…”

“While we've been winning the war in Iraq, we've been losing here at home. But, I strongly believe things are about to change soon.” Matt at June 15,

A quick word about gun control...

A couple days ago, a woman and mother of three was beaten to death while biking on a metro-Atlanta trail. The trail makes its users refrain from carrying a firearm on the trail.

Would this have happened if she had been packing?

I think not.

Posted by: Georgia Frawg [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 12:40 PM

Would this have happened if she had been packing?

No one can say for sure, but I ask the additional question, if the policy to ban carrying firearms was reversed, and the perps knew that bikers might be packing would probably be almost as effective.

These criminals always prey on the weak and shy away from someone who even might be able to defend themselves.

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 01:49 PM

Would this have happened if she had been packing?

One more thing...would you rather be facing a fine - or even jail time - for illegally carrying a gun to defend yourself or be dead? Just a thought.

WASHINGTON - Sweeping reforms to the nation's intelligence system after the 9/11 attacks have done little to improve information-sharing or generate a greater sense of urgency among U.S. intelligence agencies, a House report concluded Thursday.

When will the republican party get off their fat asses and stop wasting time on gay marriage and flag burning amendments and get back to the business of making us safe?

Posted by: Barneyg2000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 02:15 PM

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/28/world/middleeast/28abuse.html?_r=2&pagewanted=1&oref=slogin

The longer this war continues the more we will hear about stories like this:

“In a lengthy sworn statement, he said he had witnessed a deliberate plot by his fellow soldiers to kill the three handcuffed Iraqis and a cover-up in which one soldier cut another to bolster their story. The squad leader threatened to kill anyone who talked. Later, one guilt-stricken soldier complained of nightmares and “couldn’t stop talking” about what happened, Sergeant Lemus said.”

“Just before leaving, the soldiers had been given an order to “kill all military-age men” at the site by a colonel and a captain, said Paul Bergrin and Michael Waddington, the lawyers who are disputing Sergeant Lemus’s account. Military officials in Baghdad have declined to comment on whether such an order, which would have been a violation of the law of war, might have been given.”

Just as Murtha had predicted, the military is broken due to over and misuse by the Bush administration.

Posted by: Barneyg2000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 02:49 PM

Barneyg2000,

When will the Republican party stop working to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gay marriage and flag burning?

As soon as those amendments are approved and ratified by 38 states to put an end to that portion of your liberal left social engineering and anti-America agenda! These are important amendments that should have already been approved and ratified!

When will Republicans get back to the business of making us safe?

They are trying, but unfortunately your liberal [progressive] traitors are doing all they can to prevent it. The liberal traitors -- who should already have been jailed for life -- publish our secrets to the New York Times who publish them terrorists and our enemies around the world. The rest of you liberals [progressives] condone and encourage it! Yep, we do need some more and stronger laws there too! Do you think you could ask your liberal Democrats to support those laws?

RE: "Sweeping reforms to the nation's intelligence system after the 9/11 attacks have done little to improve information-sharing..."

You're partially right on that one. It hasn't stopped the liberal traitors from "sharing our defense information and secrets" with the New York Times, terrorists, and our enemies! (See above!)

C'mon steve, "Christian fascist"? Take a good look at the fascists of history. You'll find they didn't like Christianity too much.

"Kill everybody"? While certainly the Bush camp has the radical idea that we have the right to fight against those who would kill us, this hardly means they (or myself, too) want to kill everybody.

“You've now seen the emergence of death squads and armed groups on right and left, and they're doing great damage to the civilian population. That's really what is new. It's something that we've seen occur since February, and it is a new challenge. This isn't about insurgency, this isn't about terror, this is about sectarian violence.” Press Briefing by National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley 7/25/06

So there you have it right from the horses mouth, we are not fighting terrorism in Iraq, we trying to stop a civil war. I do not recall Bush ever telling the American people that our goal in Iraq was to stop a civil war? Do you?

Barneyg2000,

If there is a civil war in Iraq it will have been caused in large part by the liberal Democrats and their incessant anti-Bush, anti-American rhetoric and propaganda which has encouraged and emboldened the terrorists and lead to more terrorism -- much of which is intended and designed to increase the chances of a civil war between Sunnis and Shiites!

Wrong. The civil war was created by your idol, George Bush, when he invaded Iraq. He broke it --- now it is his to fix.

Come to think of it --- what have we actually gained in Iraq by spending our treasure in both American lives (not to mention 40,000 Iraqi civilian lives) and money? Not much, if you ask most Americans.

In fact, I would argue that we have gone backwards. Terrorists were not allowed to roam free in Saddam's Iraq. Granted, Saddam was a murderous dictator, but he was no immediate threat to us (as the complete lack of WMDs to surface there has proven), and his version of Iraq was (relative to Bush's Iraq) free of terrorists eager to attack American interests. Now? Not so much.

Oh well, I guess it is one more big mess created but Bush that Gore/Feingold and the Democrats will have to clean up. Surprise, surprise.

A Plan: Get out of Iraq now and it will immediately calm down. We are the cause and the excuse for most of the violence. But, the Republicans, like the extremists on top of Massada, it's a fight to the death even if that means by their own hand. That ain't rational or sane. Peace

Posted by: steve at July 28, 2006 07:28 PM

maf53,

As I have said before, you liberals are incapable of understanding the results of your actions. You are "trained" (not educated) by your handlers, professors, and instructors you admire and idolize like Ward Churchill, Kevin Barrett, and others!

Liberals can also prepare themselves to take responsibility for the next nuclear bomb or missile attack that wipes out a city and all of it's inhabitants -- probably directly or indirectly from North Korea or Iran! It is you liberals who have weakened the president's and America's ability to deal effectively with those threats and others like Syria!!!

Goldwater is very much like Reagan in my opinion. Reagan was why I became a conservative and not a Republican.

Reagan is also why I can never support liberals again, even though I used to be one.

Having said all that...be very wary of John Dean. This guy is no conservative IMO.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 07:54 PM

Steve if your hyperbole (which it clearly is) was true (two camps) then why haven't we gone into N. Korea, Syria and Iran?

Why didn't we just carpet bomb Iraq?

Seriously, your hyperbolic diatribes daily have long ago been unworthy of response so I think this just may be my last to you.

You can think that conservatives and Bush (not the same) want nothing but war and to kill everyone, but the facts speak for themselves.

Posted by: Barneyg2000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 08:10 PM

Are there any ills in todays world are not the fault of liberals? Would everything be just rosy if we stepped aside and let you cons run things?

Oops that would be like a dictatorship or something wouldn't it? No dissention allowed?

That would be a truly ugly world.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 08:21 PM

Barneyg2000,

NO ONE announced plans to shut down NORAD!

Only a true left wing liberal can twist a story about M-O-V-I-N-G NORAD's headquarters into an anti-Bush comment!

I know you and your libbie friends aren't really concerned about America's defense, but get your facts straight -- oh, I forgot, that isn't possible for a left wing libbie!

"The Denver Post reported late Thursday that the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) operations center will be moved to Peterson Air Force Base, home to the U.S. Northern Command created after the Sept. 11 attacks."

"The emergence of varied terrorist threats such as suicide bombers 'is what recommends to us that we don't need to maintain Cheyenne Mountain in a 24/7 status. We can put it on 'warm standby,' Keating said."

"Officials with the North American Aerospace Defense Command will keep the facility on 'warm standby,' said Lt. Cmdr. Sean Kelly, a NORAD spokesman, but the day-to-day work carried out there now will shift over the next two years to NORAD’s headquarters at Peterson."

"Adm. Tim Keating, who commands NORAD and NorthCom, told the Denver Post that current intelligence 'leads us to believe a missile attack from China or Russia is very unlikely.'”

"Keating told the Post that he wants the complex to remain usable — ideally being able to get it up and running within one hour."

I'm sure some members of Congress will check into this before it is finalized. Barneyg, contact your members of Congress and tell them you want NORAD operations to remain in Cheyenne Mountain. Perhaps their headquarters can be moved there also.

Posted by: Barneyg2000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 08:55 PM

barney---here's a for instance for you.

Barney lives at 1080 Elm Street, with his wife or partner or whoever. One morning they are awakened by lots of police activity at the house next door, 1060 Elm Street. The police have trapped some murderers in the house, sadly only after they have slaughtered Barney's neighbors---husband, wife, four kids, dog, and hamster, all infidels.

It turns out that these killers started at 900 Elm Street and moved up the street, killing everyone in each house along the way. They just happened to be stopped one house short of Barney's house, so the sign-painting party (for the pro-gay-marriage march the next day) was not interrupted.

Messages left in the houses of the butchered were all the same: "We will kill everyone on this side of Elm Street and then we will come back down the other side and kill everyone on that side. Then we will go over to Walnut Street and kill everyone who lives there. We will not stop until every person in this town is dead."

Now we get to the interesting part. The Chief of Police gets on his bullhorn and announces:

"HEY YOU MURDERERS!! We are out here and we are not going to let you escape! We have guns and knives and dogs and tear gas and we plan to stop you from going on to 1080 Elm Street and killing Barney and his family and friends, and from then going on to kill everyone in this town.

However, we have some people on the town council who don't like standoffs because they think it makes the town look bad. And the mayor's son is a cop coming on duty next shift and she doesn't want him to get hurt. And we worry about how much money this might cost us. So we will stand out here for another two hours, and then we will all go home.

So you had better come out right now, with your hands up, because we mean business---until 10:00, anyway."

How safe would you feel, Barney? How confident would you feel in having those bad men come out and surrender, knowing that they know they just have to wait till the pressures of town politics make the police go away?

Or would you figure yeah, we don't need to spend all this time and money, and get all the bad publicity, so let the cops go home, and we'll just sit here and hope the bad guys forget about 1080?

I'm guessing you would prefer that the cops keep that neighbor house surrounded until the bad guys are caught. And I'm betting that you would feel that the safety of you, and your family, and all the remaining people in your town, is more important than money or the publicity from having been in this position in the first place.

I'll go a step further----I'll bet that you would feel that those on the street urging the police to go home are not your friends, and do not have the best interests of you, or your town, at heart.

But there is no way you can believe that an ultimatum like the police chief's is going to do anything but encourage the killers next door. On the contrary, you would be on the phone to the mayor and the paper and anyone you could reach, yelling that this was the stupidest idea you ever heard, that they need to make it clear they will NOT leave till the killers come out and surrender, that telling them they just have to wait out an impatient and unmotivated police force is just silly.

However, you do think that the terrorists in Iraq will stop killing people if they know we are undermined from within and being pressured to leave before the job is done? They won't just wait us out?

Barneyg2000,

And your point is...?

We are talking about the decision to move NORAD operations and co-locate it with it's headquarters. NORAD operations will still be operating and tracking missiles or whatever. If they keep Cheyenne Mountain in a "warm standby" mode, operations would be moved back underground if it looks like we are about to take an all out attack from Russia or China. What does that have to do with North Korea?

North Korea won't be aiming for NORAD operations or headquarters. They aim for a city like Honolulu, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., Tokyo, or Seoul if they fire off a few nuclear missiles themselves. If they do it indirectly, they will give or sell a nuclear bomb, with or without the missile, to terrorists or possibly Iran if Iran wants to "speed up" their acquisition.

"North Korea won't be aiming for NORAD operations or headquarters. " posted by AAR

How do you know? Why would N. Korea's attack plan be any differnt than the Russia's?

NK would want to eliminate our capacity to retaliate to a nuclear attack. The whole idea of NORAD was to prevent a sneak attack (missile or suitcase nuke) from taking out our strategic command. Obviously, Bush does not take NK seriously as a threat.

"John Lennon and FDR are my heroes."

I like em both also.

FDR made Teddy Kennedy's dad quit as ambassador to England under threat of criminal charges.

FDR skirted the law with arms shipments and other covert aid to Britain before the war.

FDR brilliantly turned around the economy - by selling food and oil to war ravaged Europe.

FDR started the OSS, which became the CIA.

FDR started the Manhatten Project, which got us our nukes. Not only was it a secret from Congress, he didn't even tell his Vice-President.

Navy and Army code-breakers were not afraid to crack enemy codes and press the information home to advantage against our enemies.

When FDR didn't like the way the Supreme Court was trashing his new deal agencies, he inreased the size of the court and tried to pack it with cronies.

FDR sat with Churchill and Stalin and carved up post war Europe. That saved all those people in Eastern Europe all those pesky problems that crop up when you try to govern yourselves.

And after he left, we had to change the Constitution to limit the number of terms you could serve as President.

And, he sure did kick ass (after a slow start) on Germany, Italy, and Japan!

I like Lennons pre-OKO music with that band he was part of...

Barney, is closing Cheyenne Mountain really an issue? The place is cramped and full of ‘50’s and ‘60’s technology. It is a pain in the butt to work there and difficult to upgrade and maintain systems there. Back in the day, it made sense to put this communications center under a mountain. Since then, the military thought had moved to what they call “Network Centric Warfare.” For this function, that means a large number of hardened sites with secure and robust network access.

I mean, NORAD was/is just to warn us about an incoming strike so we could launch our counter-strike before we die. The new Missile Defense Agency is all about shooting down the attack BEFORE it gets here so we don’t die. I like that part – the not dieing part. So – the military wants to move some functionality… is this really an issue with you? Because I just don’t get your point.

I know we beat this to death, but it’s not all about Bush you know. Explain your views on attack detection and missile defense. I’d like to hear them.

To add my two cents worth!!

To point out that the left will NOT support drilling in the U.S. of A, Now just think about this for a minute folks!,........Yet they will send billions of dollars to Iran, Iraz, Syria, and all the terror network countries over there for their oil? What is it? could they be supporting the terrorists?

WHY CAN'T WE DRILL IN AMERICA, FOR PETES SAKE?

Jeremiah:

Why couldn't we accept oil from Venezuala when they offered to sell it to us for $50 a barrel?

Kahn-

What do you think about electing presidents say for one 6 year term? It seems to me presidents begin campaigning almost immediately for their second term .

FDR wire tapped homes in 1936 under his authorization because of possible German spying.

FDR also sold weapons to Great Britain in 1939 and 1940 by declaring them "surplus" and then sold to US Steel who in turn sold them to Great Britain. He found this loophole because it was illegal to sell them directly to the British as they were in a war and we were not.

If Bush did either of those things Ash, you would scream for impeachment...oh wait...Bush did one of those things and Reagan the other.

Oh the irony!

A coupla things to iron out the wrinkles in your accusation.

FDR's wire tapping was pre-1978, therefore pre- Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which was designed to protect Americans from illegal eavesdropping. I decry King Georges use of wiretaps as illegal.

FDR was a good and honorable man who went on to create the New Deal. King George continues to favor the wealthy (aka his base). FDR was a great president despite having a serious physical disbility. King George is a bad president despite being a former alcoholic and drug user.

Sorry, try again later.

Walmart got it's butt kicked in Germany and after 8 1/2 years of losing money there has sold all its stores there and is withdrawing. WOO HOO!

Germany already has cutthroat competition and a cultural distaste for buying fresh vegetables 2 aisles over from lawn mowers and fertilizer.

Good for them. May the trend spread.

Walmart concedes defeat

Barmy, if you want to respond to something I say, try saying something relevant that actually means something. This:

"Al, how about this, you live next door to me and I leave town for the weekend while you hope that Bush (I mean the police) protects you. "

is simply a way to put some words on the screen so you can pretend you didn't get skunked. Because you have no response. You know, and you always HAVE known, that announcing a withdrawal date would be stupid. You promoted it because you knew Bush was too smart to do it, and you thought you could create a straw man that would make him look bad. But when the reality was laid out for you, you had nothing. NOTHING.

And, BTW, I would much prefer Bush to protect me than a bunch of lily-livered whining appeasers who think the way to avoid death and destruction is just to beg harder. So far, he's protected all of us a lot more than anyone thought we could be protected, in spite of the sniping and undermining from the fellow travellers you have signed on with.

Welcome, Mary---it's good to have another female voice here. Keep posting common sense and you, too, will be targeted by the neorad Air America disciples. Not to worry---it's validation for the rightness of your position, and kind of like walking through a swarm of gnats. Annoying as all get out, but basically toothless.

Just remember: If You're Not Right, You're Wrong.
