Anti-Hezbollah Offensive to Take Weeks

So says Haaretz:

IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz told reporters in Tel Aviv on Friday that any military incursion into Lebanon would be limited in scope.

"We will fight terror wherever it is because if we do not fight it, it will fight us. If we don't reach it, it will reach us," Halutz said in a nationally televised news conference. "We will also conduct limited ground operations as much as needed in order to harm the terror that harms us."

The IDF's operation plan indicated that the operation would likely take weeks.

"It takes time to hit at terror," Halutz said.

"The restraint which we showed over the course of years is interpreted by those among the terrorists as weakness," the chief of staff said. "On this count, they made a horrible mistake by assuming that we would persist in holding back and restraining ourselves. Our duty as an army was - and we did as such - to recommend a halt to this development, which stems from a sense of us not having an answer."

Halutz said that close to 100 Hezbollah gunmen have been killed over the course of the IDF offensive.

So, I don't think we should expect some sudden diplomatic breakthrough. Hezbollah is now fighting for survival - and any survival of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon would eventually be spun in the Islamist world as a victory, so Israel had better be pretty darned thorough in this campaign if they don't want to have to repeat it in five years or so.

It would be great if Israel could go into the Bekka Valley while they are in Lebanon and get saddams wmd. Hopefully the wmd has not been removed by the terrorists.

The longer the Israeli's conduct these operations, the worst will be the result for them.Peace

Hezbollah, I suspect, also has personnel and installations in Syria - possibly in several other Middle East countries.
I wouldn't hold my breath - any fight against idealism/terrorism, even this one, will not be won in weeks.

So much for the breathless reports from the media last week that the US had given Israel one week. What a bunch of clowns.

Rev, here's what the news story was...

"The US is giving Israel a window of a week to inflict maximum damage on Hizbullah before weighing in behind international calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon, according to British, European and Israeli sources."

It was a week before the US would "weigh in" on calls for a cease fire. Low and behold, a week later, Rice went to the Middle East with the US plan to bring about a "lasting peace.":

"Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, soon to leave for the turbulent Middle East, said today that the violence in Lebanon must end in a stable and lasting peace, not just a cease-fire.

A simple cease-fire “would be a false promise” and would “guarantee future violence,” Ms. Rice said as she gave an outline of her trip, which will begin on Sunday and take her to Israel and then to Rome to meet with diplomats of other nations anxious to see an end to the bloodshed."

The news reports were absolutely correct. The US waited a week before it started its own diplomatic efforts to end the fighting.

The news reports were absolutely correct.

So you bit on that head fake by Condi? Doesn't surprise me. If she did anything, she told her friends in the Israeli government, "Kick booty!" She's making sure the worthless UN plays zero role here and that gives Israel the time to do their righteous work in Lebanon. But you are allowed to create your own fantasy if you wish.

Let me know when you hear, "Condi calls for cease fire." I'll wait...

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 09:26 AM

"We believe that a cease-fire is urgent," Rice told reporters on a flight from Washington to a refueling stop in Ireland. "It is important, however, to have conditions that will make it sustainable."

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/24/mideast.diplomacy/index.html

I believe the story about the US waiting a week to "weigh-in" behind calls for a cease-fire came out last Wednesday, so the promise probably came Monday or Tuesday.

Funny how a week after that the US reportedly told Israel that it had a week before US would act diplomatically to bring about a cease-fire, Rice is in Lebanon and Israel to talk about how to bring about a cease fire.

The news media aren't the clowns here, Rev.

The news media aren't the clowns here, Rev.

Nah. They're the truth-sayers, right? The Oracles of Enlightenment, right? Hahaha! The fact is, as I just heard argued on the TV news, Condi did not speak to "all the parties" in her surprise trip (the vaunted media on board her plane didn't even know they were going to Beirut). And because she didn't, there will be no movement toward a cease-fire. Even Hezbollah ain't buying the cease-fire, they're digging in. Sorta like you.

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 10:37 AM

"Nah. They're the truth-sayers, right?"

They report the news the best they can. And in this case, they did a pretty good job it seems.

"And because she didn't, there will be no movement toward a cease-fire. Even Hezbollah ain't buying the cease-fire, they're digging in."

The report from last week didn't say how strongly the US would push for a cease fire, only that they would wait for a week before "weighing-in" behind calls for a cease fire. They did wait a week, they have weighed-in on international calls for a cease fire, and after today will have met with the Lebanese and Israeli governments as to how to best bring about an end to the fighting.

As I said before, the news report from last week looks pretty right on the money.

Posted by: Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 10:52 AM

I think I found the problem:

They report the news the best they can.

You actually believe that. You mean like Dan Rather? You mean like that? Like the NY Times? That kind of dedication? Yup. Found it.

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 11:47 AM

Yes, I do believe that. I'm under no assumptions they get it right 100% of the time, but they come pretty close.

As I said before, this time they got it right despite your attempts to claim otherwise.

Rev.,

As I pointed out, the reported didn't say there would be a cease-fire in 1 week's time, only that the US would wait a week before engaging in the international effort to bring about a cease fire.

The report was correct.

Posted by: Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 12:26 PM

...only that the US would wait a week before engaging...

Engaging? Hahahaha! They're stalling. And I take my hat off to them for it. Engaging indeed.

Even that zero Annan said that Hezbollah has to disarm first. Do you really think that is going to happen? I mean without the Israelis forcibly disarming them? Like I said, its a ploy.

Just heard Israeli UN Ambassador on the news say they're all for an international, non-UN force, only after Hezbollah has been disarmed. Heh.

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 01:10 PM

I really used to like blue....

Meanwhile, in Iran, Hezbollah says:

Hezbollah's representative in Iran struck a defiant tone Monday, warning that his Islamic militant group plans to widen its attacks on Israel until "no place" is safe for Israelis.

Hossein Safiadeen also reinforced earlier threats by Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah to widen the scope of attacks, which have included unprecedented missile strikes deep into northern Israel.

Yup. Cease fire right around the corner. Hahaha!

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 01:14 PM

Reverend,

Again, as I said before, the news reports did not say to what degree the US would engage in bringing about a cease fire. Nor did it say there would be a cease fire in a week. But as reported, a week later, the US has indeed engaged parties in this conflict with the aim of bringing about a peaceful resolution. Is it just lip service? Maybe. But they are now engaged.

But, in terms of talking about whether what was reported was correct or not, it was. The US waited a week before weighing in on international calls for a cease fire.

Posted by: Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 01:28 PM

...the news reports did not say to what degree the US would engage in bringing about a cease fire

Ah. So it was more like wudda, cudda, shudda, maybe and sorta. No wonder you put so much faith in their reporting. Please cite where the US is calling for a cease-fire. I seem to have missed that. Or are they just "weighing in?" How exactly does one "weigh in?"

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 01:44 PM

"How exactly does one 'weigh in?'"

WASHINGTON: The US remained opposed to an immediate Middle East ceasefire because it would not end the threat posed by Hezbollah militants, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said as she prepared for a trip to the region.

Rice said on Friday that it remained "urgent" that the violence be halted but added that Hezbollah cannot be left in a position to carry out attacks against Israel in future and provoke a crisis like the one that erupted last week.

"A ceasefire would be a false promise if it simply returns us to the status quo," Rice told reporters. "That would be a guarantee of future violence."

"We do seek an end to the current violence, and we seek it urgently," Rice said. "More than that, we also seek to address the root causes of that violence so that a real and endurable peace can be established."

The story a week ago was that the US would not be proactively seeking a diplomatic solution to the fighting for another week. A week passed and now they have started diplomatic efforts.

Posted by: Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 03:03 PM

Fox news reports that on her visit to Beirut, Condi Rice told the Lebanexe leader "the US will not call for a cease fire."

Saniora and other Lebanese officials have been pushing Rice to call for an immediate cease-fire, something the Bush administration has resisted on grounds that it would not address the root causes of hostilities - Hezbollah's domination of south Lebanon.

"We all want to urgently end the fighting. We have absolutely the same goal," Rice told reporters traveling with her.

Rice and Bush have resisted pressure for an immediate cease-fire, saying that any peace agreement must come with right conditions to ensure that it is sustainable. They particularly want to see an agreement that would help Lebanon control its entire territory, including the southern third that is dominated by Hezbollah.

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 03:16 PM

That, BTW, is what is known in diplomatic circles as an "impasse."

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 03:17 PM

Are those crickets I hear?

Posted by: Reverend Scaramonga [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 24, 2006 10:44 PM

I imagine you hear those everywhere you go.

I've quoted Rice saying she isn't calling for an immediate peace fire. I've also explained how the report you ridicule the media about didn't say there would be a cease fire in a week, or say that the US would call for an immediate cease fire in a week. Just that they'd start their own diplomatic actions. This is the third time I've explained this. If you're too dense to pick it up, I can't help you.

Posted by: Tom Shipley [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 25, 2006 08:38 AM

This is the third time I've explained this.

Just as wrong the third time as the first - will be the fourth too. Goebbels was wrong about that repetition thing - give up.
