Matt has some comments over at GOP Bloggers, and then there's this from Real Clear Politics:
Joe Lieberman's world is imploding in slow motion right in front of him and he and his campaign clearly have no clue what to do. Yesterday's Quinnipiac poll confirms private polling and shows Lamont surging ahead of the three-term incumbent, 51% - 47%, a 19-point swing from Quinnipiac's last poll only six weeks ago showing Lieberman with a 55% - 40% lead. To make matters worse, Quinnipiac's numbers have been running considerably more favorable towards Lieberman, as Rasmussen Reports' June survey had Lieberman ahead only 46% - 40% and was taken around the same time Quinnipiac pegged Lieberman's lead at 15.
It's clear Lamont has the momentum. The polls look to be playing catch-up to the anecdotal evidence that all of the energy is on the side of the challenger. Lieberman's other problem is that he is utterly unprepared to execute the organizational ground game needed to get his voters to the polls on a Tuesday in early August. Cake walk wins in 1994 and 2000, coupled with solid job approval numbers which mirror the state's other Democratic Senator Chris Dodd have bred an arrogance and complacency that is catching up with the Lieberman campaign big time. Suddenly, they are finding themselves in a battle for their political lives and they are nowhere near fighting shape.
I don't know if this is the end of Lieberman - Bill Clinton is said to be coming to town to campaign for Lieberman, and that might give him a big boost as Slick still wows the Democrats. Be that as it may, this is a signpost on the road to Democratic perdition - they are destroying themselves. It is really no surprise - hatred rules their world, and people who hate tend to lash out at one another. For our Democrats, and especially our leftwing Democrats, hatred of President Bush trumps all - quite honestly, I don't think there is a candidate they'd vote against if that candidate could show strong hatred of President Bush. Hate President Bush, and you'll be excused anything on the left - don't hate him, and you'll be condemned no matter how leftwing you otherwise are.
It is tinged with sadness, the destruction of this once-great political Party. It should always be kept in mind that my family is ancestrally Democrat. My grandfather cast only one GOP vote in his entire life - for Ronald Reagan in 1980. My recently deceased Godfather stayed loyal to the Democrats to the end, even as he was dismayed by the candidates they put forward (he was an early supporter of Gephardt in 2004...but I don't know if he bothered to vote that November). My father is to this day a registered Democrat. I was the first person in my family - as far as we can tell - to actually register as a Republican. The Party lost all of its connection to the bedrock American conservatism, and now like all things disconnected from the past, it is going insane.

The salient point that you make is that Joe Lieberman's voting record shows that he's a hard over liberal and yet that was not enough to save him. The fact he supported the war (in radical Democrat circles that equals supporting Bush) was enough to sink him - or at least to hurt him severely. Therefore it is easy to see that the party is tearing itself apart on one single issue - hatred for George Bush - even as a recent poll showed that 63 percent of voters (from both parties) say Bush will not influence their vote in either direction.
This is a major miscalculation on the part of the liberals who have gained influence in the party beyond their numbers via fundraising on the Internet and organizations like Moveon.org. They may well gain a death grip on the levers of power in the Democrat party but in so doing they will alienate the vast majority of the voting public. Non-radical Democrats will likely stay home on election day, and moderates will be pushed into awaiting Republican arms.
But this may not come to pass. People like Lieberman and Hillary and some others who don't sign up to the far-left nuttiness are very powerful in their own right. Hillary, for example, has over $50 million in the bank right now - far more than she needs to defeat hear unheard of opponents in New York for the 2006 senate race. By the 2008 time frame, she'll have much much more than that. But the radicals have drawn the lines and there will be a fight for the soul of the party. An old saying goes something like this, "old age and treachery will defeat youth and exuberance every time." But the damage to the party, which will seem like anything but united at election time, will be severe. I would not be surprised to see a faction (call it the Kos faction) of radical, anti-war Bush haters spin off from the party into some single issue group called the Peace Party, thereby destroy any hope of gaining any power, and at the same time hurting the Democrats who stay with the old party and they too will be standing on the outside looking in.
Only AFTER 2008 when they lose another White House bid, will the real fighting and purges start. And it won't be pretty.

Mark, I also grew up in a democratic household in NJ. I was a democratic and my first vote was for mondale/ferraro. This was so even though I was always pro life. Now, I am a conservative, as are half of my immediate family. I voted twice for President George W. Bush, the proudest votes I ever cast. For the rest of my life I will always identify myself as a Bush conservative.

Being a native Connecticut Yankee (I was born there, lived there for 24 years, and still have some family and friends there), I've kept up with the Lieberman race to a certain extent. When Lamont first appeared on the scene I didn't think he had a chance. But almost from the very start Lieberman has been shooting himself in the foot. If he loses, the the libby netroots contingent are probably going to take credit, but they probably shouldn't. Lieberman has been his own worst enemy -- his own personal arrogance has become the overriding issue. And his recent decision to file to run as an independent just in case he loses the primary really pissed people off. Not just libbies and not just Democrats, either.
Lamont put in a fairly strong showing in their recent debate, but I think the thing that allowed him to pull ahead in the recent Quinnipiac poll had a lot to do with Lieberman's filing. People were really annoyed with that. I suspect they'll calm down by primary time -- assuming Lieberman doesn't shoot himself in the foot yet again.
In the mean time the GOP candidate, a guy named Alan Schlesinger, is taking a nose dive as a result of not one but TWO different scandals involving problems with gambling. Apparently CT's GOP governor urged him to step aside and let someone else run, but Schlesinger refused. That, in turn, prompted speculation that maybe Lieberman will be drafted to run on the GOP ticket. But apparently {a href="http://www.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2006/jul/19/ct_sen_its_official_lieberman_rules_out_any_run_on_gop_line">he's declined. His campaign says, "Joe Lieberman will never run as a Republican. Never."
Yeah, well we'll see after the primary I guess -- assuming it's even a possibility at that point. Anyway, it's been an interesting campaign.

LIEberman is thge worst kind of political scum, one that hides behind a political umbrella, yet does not support any of their ideals.
People see LIEberman for the scum he is, not to mention he has not returned there since voters sent him to Washington
Hes out and he knows it, which is why he announced that he will run as independant if turfed out in the Primaries.
Take a long hard look at Ned Lamont, he is the next senator of Connecticut. LIEberman will simply fade into political obscurity and get a well paying job at some Republican owned firm.

You can't wait for the ripping of Alaska for the six-months worth of 'terror-free' oil??? No problem with the spying either --cuz you Believe he's "not" spying on Americans --right??? Say, I've got a neato-keeno bridge, going cheap --interested?

The Demorats are destroying each other and Lieberman issue is just one of many indications. They have gotten no traction in the last three months, the generic (and meaningless) head to head numbers showing a double digit Demorat lead in the Congressional ballot are now down to low, single digits.

When you play both ends against the middle like Lieberman and his Zionist friends have done, time will eventually run out. It has for Joe and it has for the Democratic Party. We will have a Peace Party and a War Party and Lieberman belongs to the warmongers. Peace

Slick Willie has announced that he will honor the Lieberman campaign with his presence and support.
So the lefty idol will put his God-like aura behind Lieberman. This will have two effects:
1. Joe will win.
2. The Lefties will freak out
Will they trash Ol' Slick for his treachery? They've already started on his homely wife and anybody who supports Lieberman. But Willie? I don't think they can bring themselves to do it. I could be wrong. They are cannibals.

I am a native CT Yankee as well and have lived there for 17 of my 24 years. Basically Lieberman is being ridiculed because of one stance --- one very, very important stance --- which is of course Iraq. And I don't necessarily agree with him.
But at least he holds true to his convictions, and if you can't respect that about him, then that's too bad. Lieberman is is a Democrat, and I am proud to have him on our side.

As a native CT Yank,(now residing uncomfortably in the People's Republic of California) I was always proud of Joe Lieberman, and always will be. A great man, great Senator, and unfortunately, the target of the Far Left.

How dare Lieberman got against the party dialectic!
Obviously the party does not believe in personal convictions of what is right and wrong. The only important thing is what the party believes in and what they say is important, at this nanosecond!!!
He deserves what he gets!
