Americans to be Evacuated From Lebanon

Given what happened in the 80's, I admit to being a little surprised that there are this many Americans in Lebanon:

U.S. security teams landed at the American embassy just outside Beirut on Sunday to plan the evacuation of some of the estimated 25,000 U.S. citizens living in war-torn Lebanon.

Witnesses said two helicopters flew in from over the Mediterranean and landed on the embassy grounds, located on a fortified hilltop in the north Beirut suburb of Aukar.

"The arrival of the teams is an important first step in facilitating the safe departure of Americans who want to leave Lebanon," the embassy said in a statement.

Clearing the decks, as it were - we don't know what sort of action is coming on our part, but better to have these 25,000 Americans out of harms way before we do it.

Meanwhile, Hizbollah remains suicidal:

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hizbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said on Sunday confrontation with Israel was just beginning after the bombardment of the Israeli city of Haifa.

"We will continue. We still have a lot more and we are just at the beginning," he said in a taped televised address. "We promise them surprises in (any) confrontation."

I think this is going to get a lot worse before it starts getting better.

UPDATE: Hizbollah's order of battle:

By The Associated Press

A look at some of Hezbollah's missiles:

_ Fajr-5: the biggest, with a range of 45 miles and a 440-pound payload.

_ Fajr-3: range of 22 miles and a 200-pound payload.

_ Katyushas: range of 12 miles, and the most numerous missile in the Hezbollah arsenal - about 10,000.

Numbers:

_ Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah has repeatedly said his group has more than 12,000 rockets.

_ Israel's head of military intelligence, Brig. Gen. Yuval Halmish, says Hezbollah has placed at least 10,000 rockets in southern Lebanon.

Quesion: Who in heck provided 10,000 Katyushas' to Hizbollah?

WIkpedia says Hizbollah has modified some of the Katyushas to have a range of 60-70 miles.

Yeah, and if you listen to a-holes such as Joe Biden and Jane Harman, it's all our fault. It's all our fault because we didn't do what Jimmuh and Slicky Blue Dress did--we didn't kiss the terrorist's asses...

Nasrallah will soon be shaking hands with Yassin, Arafat, Rantisi, and Zarqawi. And he'll be wondering why Paradise is so hot.

we didn't kiss the terrorist's asses.

We chose option 2, K-I-C-K terrorist's ases. A far better choice, except for libs who seem to like the feel of ass hair on their lips and the smell of Arab butts.

Rev,

I do wonder when these men are killed if, in that last moment they are alive, they understand just how badly duped they have been?

To think that these Hizbollah people are putting themselves in to the meat grinder just so corrupt and worldly mullahs in Iran can cling on to power a little longer...

Unfortunately I feel that is an understatement!!! I just hope WMD's aren't involved(saddaams maybe?) Yes, I think it'll get much much worse before it gets any better! I don't think they would tell us they have suprises for us unless they did, they a re a proud group!

*Sighs*

I agree, this is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. My only question is, how much worse is it going to get?

For five years now Bush has been preoccupied with Iraq and has forgotten about Iran, N. Korea and the Middle East. You know, the kinds of things that really matter.

But Bush says "trust me"! "Ther either wit us or agan us!"

Iran and N. Korea just told us to F-off (inspections/missle tests) and Syria is saying "you looking at me?"

Now the cowboy and Condi are shrugging their shoulders, wondering what went wrong, and who will fix it.

You "true believers" are brilliant!

Years ago, I was working in Germany. One of my colleagues (who was from Bangladesh) used to give me a hard time because I had to file American taxes as well as German. I remember telling him:

“Well, at least I know that if stuff goes to sh*t here, there’ll be Marines landing a helicopter on the roof trying to get me out of here. And there aren’t any Bangladeshi Marines coming to save your ass.”

It rang true then, and it rings true now. I hope all the tourists and business people get out before it gets worse.

BG2K - Thanks for your brilliant insight. Because Iraq and Syria are not in the mid-east. Oh wait, they are. Israel backed out of these territories, just like you libbies wanted. Here are the results. You have only invective and nothing constructive to add do you?

What are YOUR suggestions barney? How would you have done it differently? Let the grown ups talk and go back to your X-box. Oh, and take a bath.

You mean you aren't are Marvel Comics fan??? X-Men and Spider-Man are great!

Does anyone think this war will end up with nuclear weapons being fired, or do you think it will stay conventional?

Get back on your meds immediately, before that big green monster comes out of your closet again and starts sucking what little brain you have left out through your ears.

*Chuckles*

Trolling aside, what is the "solution" from our friend on the other side? Hmm? Anything? You can point fingers all day long but actually coming up with some solutions? How about it?

Posted by: Gozer [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 16, 2006 11:27 PM

Mark asks: "Who in heck provided 10,000 katyushas to Hizbollah?" I think Iran supplied them. Iran and Syria are the primary supporters of Hizbollah and Hamas. The primary supporter of Iran is Russia. As a result of the instability in the middle east, Russia gets high oil prices. Russia is sitting on vast oil supplies, therefore Russia who sits on the largest arsenal of WMD in the world is awash in petro dollars. In order to achieve a long range solution, we will need to find some way to get Russia to stop supporting the terrorist supporting states.

Once again Barney, you dazzle us with your complete ignorance to diplomacy & (God forbid) actually defending freedom and democracy!

Gozer, I have my suspicions in the nuclear realm! The sad thing is, if they use nukes, George Bush & the U.S. will be to blame! Thank you, Ash, Barney, TEO, Leftorium, etc. etc. We can never do enough, but if we do anything, we are just cowboyin it! Pathetic lefty losers with no hope of power in this world or any world to come! I actually do feel sorry for you(about three seconds out of every day)!

You ask: "Does anyone think this war will end up with nuclear weapons being fired, or do you think it will stay conventional?" The only way Israel would use nuclear weapons is if the survival of the country were threatened. If they used them it would be as a last gasp effort to stay alive. Also, they might use them if Hizbollah, Hamas, Syria, or Iran use WMD first. A true wild card here are Saddam's missing WMD. As you probably know, some reports indicate they were moved to Lebanon's Bekaa Valley.

Obviously our intellegence was wrong. The WMD wer not "there." At least they were not where we thought they would be. As everyone knows, the conventional wisdom is they did not exist. Given the situation we are currently in, I hope and pray the conventional wisdom on Saddam's WMD stockpiles is correct!!

"Meanwhile, Hizbollah remains suicidal:"-MN

Heh. That's a bit redundant, huh? These Shiite Muslim terrorists crave death. I wonder if they want the female virgins...or the male virgins? Sick. Sick. Sick.

Qu'ran 52:24: Round about them will serve, (devoted) to them, young male servants (handsome) as Pearls well-guarded.

Qur'an 56.17: Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness), Qur'an 56.18: With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains

Qur'an 76:19: “And round them shall serve immortal boys of perpetual freshness, never altering in age. If you saw them, you would think they were scattered pearls.”

Qur'an 76:19: And round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness): If thou seest them, thou wouldst think them scattered Pearls.

Freedom 1,

I believe that nuclear weapons are far more likely to be used if Iran steps in more overtly. Or if any of the captured IDF soldiers end up in Iran or Syria. I don't think Isreal will dismiss the threats Iran is making, simply because they watched both Iran and Iraq willingly sacrifice a generation in a war neither could win.

You're right about that wild card.

"I believe that nuclear weapons are far more likely to be used if Iran steps in more overtly." Posted by: kjstrouble

Y'know, I guess that is what I'm really pondering. What's the likelihood that Iran and Israel will end up in open warfare (versus the Iranian proxy warfare vis a vis Hezbollah that's raging now)?

I found it! Matt posted the following article at GOPbloggers on June 28, 2006-

Gaza Militants Claim To Have fired WMD into Israel

Via Reuters... A spokesman for gunmen in the Gaza Strip said they had fired a rocket tipped with a chemical warhead at Israel early on Thursday.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment on the claim by the spokesman from the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement.

The group had recently claimed to possess about 20 biological warheads for the makeshift rockets commonly fired from Gaza at Israeli towns. This was the first time the group had claimed firing such a rocket.

"The al-Aqsa Brigades have fired one rocket with a chemical warhead" at southern Israel, Abu Qusai, a spokesman for the group, said in Gaza.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said the army had not detected that any such rocket was fired, nor was there any report of such a weapon hitting Israel.

B.Poster,

Still, that is a lot of ordnance - 10,000 missiles! You don't just go to the corner store to get those...

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2006 12:52 AM

Perhaps WMDs, in the form of chmical weapons, are what Nasrallah is alluding to when he talks of 'surprises'. If so, Israel is likely to retaliate against Syria for sure, and perhaps Iran as well.
