The Worsening Situation in Israel

The United States government has correctly identified Syria and Iran as the ulimate source of the trouble Israel is having:

ROSTOCK, Germany (Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday demanded the immediate release of two Israeli soldiers captured by Lebanon's Hizbollah guerrillas and blamed Syria and Iran for the attacks.

"We condemn in the strongest terms Hizbollah's unprovoked attack on Israel and the kidnapping of the two Israeli soldiers," said Frederick Jones, spokesman with the White House National Security Council.

"We call for immediate and unconditional release of the two soldiers," Jones told reporters in Germany, hours before President George W. Bush was to arrive for meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"We also hold Syria and Iran, which directly support Hizbollah, responsible for this attack and for the ensuing violence," Jones said.

The United States called the attack "an unprovoked act of terrorism" aimed at exacerbating Middle East tensions.

This isn't a problem which will go away. Israel is fully capable of dealing with the immediate issue - getting back the captured IDF soldiers - but the larger issue requires America to lead the way. After all, the problem we face in Iraq is also largely fueled by Syria and Iran.

In the end, we must have a day of reckoning with both of these horrific regimes - we daren't shrink from this challenge, and challenge to the United States is what this really is. What Syria and Iran are doing in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel is testing our resolve - testing to see if we have the political will to both stick it out in Iraq and take the fight to the source.

It is now July, I suspect that by late August things will have changed greatly - we cannot go on forever like this (ie, allowing Syria and Iran free hand to cause murder and mayhem), and I don't believe that in President Bush we have a man who will allow it to go on forever.

I agree with your assertion that "we must have a day of reckoning with [Syria and Iran]" but I can't see it happening during President Bush's remaining days as President (unless of course, something majorly evil happens and is unarguably pinned on Syria and/or Iran). And if a Democrat wins the Presidency in 2008 then no matter what Iran and Syria does, nothing will be done for at least 4 years. So at the earliest that day of reckoning won't happen until after the 2008 elections.

I agree with Mark. I think we need to cut off all relations with China, since it and Iran are oil bosom buddies. China trades arms to Iran for oil. There's no telling how much Chinese merchandise ends up in our shopping carts.

If we really want to support Israel, we should consider our consumer choices. We need to think about where the things we are buying are made (China?).

That is another way of taking the fight to these regimes. Good story.

I wouldn't bet the ranch on that, Carl. I sense that Israel may FINALLY be reaching the tipping point where they've had enough. I think you may be about to see some serious whup-ass by the IAF, particularly with regard to Syria and Lebanon.

I agree spook, the IDF/IAF probably are about to remind the rest of the world why they are still strong in the middle east. Lets hope that we can support them as they need us to.

Posted by: kjstrouble [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 12, 2006 09:51 PM

Can we take out Syria yet, please? As a side benefit we can get those WMDs before Islamofascists get their grubby hands on them.

If the DemoRATs win in 2008 (yeah, right!) they'll probably start handing out WMDs to all comers so they won't be mad at us anymore. Not to mention cutting and running from the Middle East.

I think World War III has officially begun.

"What Syria and Iran are doing in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel is testing our resolve..."-Mark Noonan

Yes. Syria and Iran must be dealt with soon. America must stand strong with Israel. Colonel Oliver North on FoxNews today, said that Damascus should be very afraid of Israel. I wonder if the IDF will strike Damascus in the next few hours, days, or weeks?

I agree with Retired Spook that Israel has finally had enough. It's high time that Israel defended itself. Israel should attempt to destroy Hamas and Hezbollah. They are terrorist organizations that cannot be bargained with or reasoned with, only destroyed.

"It is now July, I suspect that by late August things will have changed greatly -"-Mark Noonan

Yes, perhaps by August 22.

Destroying the Hamas government won't have your desired effect. The government can't even control its own militias. Winning the hearts and minds is the only way that we can win the WOT.

Posted by: Georgia Frawg [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 13, 2006 12:33 AM

Georgia,

We've been trying that for ten years with the Palestinians.

Now, I personally believe that Joe Average Palestinian doesn't want war to the death with Israel...but Joe Average Palestinian doesn't dare say anything like that or else Joe Murdering Terrorist Palestinian kills him, and his whole family.

Its a nasty situation, I pray for a peaceful solution, but I'm not hopeful one is forthcoming evil men are in charge of the Palestinians, and evil some times has to be confronted with force.

(via LGF)-Lebanon's US Ambassador Supports Hizballah

The Jerusalem Post: Lebanon’s Ambassador to the US Farid Abboud was summoned back to Beirut on Wednesday night after expressing his support for Hizbullah in the US media.

Abboud was reported as saying that Israel was the only one who could bring about the release of the kidnapped IDF soldiers by agreeing to negotiate with the movement via mediators.

Officials in Beirut stressed that Abboud’s view did not represent that of Lebanon, which is vehemently opposed to Hizbullah’s actions on Israel’s northern border.

Israeli aircraft rocket Beirut airport runways
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Israeli aircraft attacked two runways at Beirut international airport on Thursday, dramatically widening an assault against Lebanon a day after Hizbollah seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight.

Jeremiah,

Yeah, LGF is a very informative site. Also, you're right. We all better get right with God!

I disagree that this is a terrorist act. I think it is an act of war. Isreal can not continue to allow the world to pretend that these actions are not government sanctioned.

If the New York based National Guard units invaded Toronto, we couldn't just say "well, yah those crazy New Yorkers - what ya gonna do?" Would Canada really stand for that?

An attack by Hamas (which IS the Palestinian government) is an attack by Palestine. An attack across the border from Lebanon is an attack by the nation of Lebanon. What the world should be afraid of - is that Isreal will supply Syria and Iran with nuclear weapons - air express delivery.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 13, 2006 01:44 AM

Kahn, I agree; and Israeli PM Olmert has stated the Hezbollah attack was an "act of war" by Lebanon.

Go Israel! God bless and protect Israel!

I posted a variation of this several hours ago, however, it seems to have been lost.

From the tone of this article, it seems that maybe just maybe the Bush administration finally gets this. I hope and pray they do. I think this phase of the Arab war of aggression against Israel has been going on for about two weeks. In the past, we would have had Bush administration officials and probably President Bush himself running to podiums everywhere by this time imploring Israel to "show restraint" or they would have been declaring Israeli actions as "unhelpful." Many intellegent people would disagree but I think we made a mistake when we pushed for a "Palestinian" state. We should have known that this state would be a terrorist supporting state and that it would be a danger to Israel, our most important ally, and probably a danger to US troops in Iraq and to the US itself. "Palestine" has become a terrorist state. We now have a chance to get this right and to stand with Israel, as they defeat this enenmy. I hope and pray we do get this right. It is vitally important to stand with Israel right now.

On 9/11 we lost about 3,000 people. As a percentage, Israel has lost far more people than we have. If the US lost the same percentage of people that Israel has, our losses would likely be somewhere around 50,000. If we lost 50,000 people, we would not be showing restraint and we would not be sending our military to liberate. We would be sending it to desroy. Yet in the past, we implored Israel to show restraint. Some Israeli officials have complained bitterly at the double standard that has been shown to them. Now we have a chance to get this right. I pray we do.

Hey, wasn't it the Beach Boys who sang:

♫ Bomb bomb bomb... bomb bomb Iran ♫
♫ Bomb bomb bomb... bomb bomb Iran ♫

Come on, now Republicans only!

♫ Bomb bomb bomb... bomb bomb Iran ♫
♫ Bomb bomb bomb... bomb bomb Iran ♫

It's not only the solution to an unhealthy backup of male agression, but it could work wonders for the stock market!

Ever since the Vincennes accidentally shot down that civilian airliner Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf, and then awarded combat-action ribbons to the entire crew, those darned Iranins have been so ungrateful for our facilitating their "suicide mission" as Thatcher described it.

Even after having found out it was faulty tracking equipment that caused the deaths of 290 Iranian civilians, "then-Vice President George H. W. Bush declared a month later, 'I will never apologise for the United States of America, ever. I don't care what it has done. I don't care what the facts are." - Nice one, George!

Of course, later the United States agreed to pay Iran $61.8 million in compensation for the lives and plane, but that wasn't an apology...

So what if we gave WMDs to Saddam to kill Iranians in the Iran-Iraq war? It's just business, right? Nothing personal, right?

The Iranian people, I mean government, I mean clerics better wise up. Just because we booted Saddam so the Shi'ites could seize power in Iraq doesn't mean we won't bomb their butts back into the stone age... ok, so they're already in the stone age. But can we try to NOT hit the 1.3 million Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Baha'i and just bomb the Muslims, ok?

Congressive

The largest supporter of Saddam was Russia, not the US. Everyone now knows any support for Iraq under Huessein was a mistake. There is not a day that goes by that we are not remined of that. 61.80 million dollars is alot of money. It is more than they would have paid us, if they made such a mistake. Except it would not be a mistake. They would do it deliberately.

The only path to peace will be a change of the Iranian regime. Right now there is no partner for peace. There is no one we can negotiate with to address prior grievenaces. Hopefully at some point there will be. Right now tIran is closely allied with Russia and China and it has massive oil reserves. As such, Iran is in a superior position right now with regards to the US. They need to take the initiative to find a peaceful solution. Besides if they did not pose a threat to us it seems unlikely we would have made teh mistake of giving any support to Saddam Huessein. Again that was a mistake. We get reminded of it every day.

Posted by: B.Poster [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 13, 2006 09:41 AM

Yes cong- the Vincennes accidentally shot down an airliner. That airliner was heading right for them while they were under attack from Iranian surface vessels firing small arms, anti-tank rockets, and heavy machine-guns. Be aware that I personally have seen Iranian military aircraft transmit civilian transponder signals when they would make provocative sprints toward our ships. And, I think you’ll agree now that civilian airlines can make effective weapons when in the hands of wacko pilots?

But. I wasn't making a judgment about who was right or whether we should be involved. My points are:
1. Attacks against armed and uniformed military people are hard to call terrorism.
2. That these actions are thinly veiled acts of war by the host nation-states were the attacks originate.
3. The continuous rocket attacks from Gaza and Lebanon certainly appear to be coordinated military action.
4. It is well known that Iran is a heavy sponsor of these organizations providing them money, training, and weapons.
5. It is well known that Syria has ENORMOUS influence in Lebanon which has effectively been under their occupation for decades. And that they also support these organizations.
6. That this is the way Israel views the acts whatever our views.
7. Expect them to act with massive force and extreme prejudice in defending their nation and peoples. With the possibility (whether true or not) that Syria received Iraq's WMD program and that Iran is developing WMD, it is conceivable that Israel may choose to destroy their military bases and even their major population centers with nuclear weapons.
These views have nothing to do with George W. Bush or the United States. This is a conflict between Israel and the surrounding states. Being blind to it, and engaging in the kind of childish chanting you prefer is irresponsible. When the balloon goes up, we’ll have to decide what we’ll do. Support Israel? Support the Arabs and Persians? Or, just stand by and watch? Which do you think we should do?

Well, I guess it is better to see what the President does and just criticize it. Way better than thinking for yourself. Thanks for your input liberals.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 13, 2006 11:25 AM

Kahn

Thanks for the additional info about the Vincennes and the airliner. I heard about this but it was a long time ago. The standard rendition of the story seems to be the one that Congressive gave. The fact that the other side which is the side that supports the American position gets reported much less frequently than the anti-American position is very frustrating.

I say we support Israel in this situation. The terrorists who are currently targeting Israel have stated repeatedly that they are part of a world wide movement. Their goal is to raise the banner of Islam over the entire world. If they were to succeed in defeating Israel, the terrorists weapons currently deployed against Israel would be deployed elsewhere. probably against the United States. As such, Israel is the primary buffer between the US and Islamic Extremists. Even if this were not the case, supporting the greatest and most free country in the middle east is simply the right thing to do.
