And yet we still get some people on the left wondering why we on the right don't trust the UN:
When Chris Charlier arrived in Iran in April of this year, he was received the same way as had always been the case in each of over 20 visits to the Islamic Republic of Iran."Wherever we went, whatever we did, they always followed us, monitoring us with video cameras and capturing every single one of our conversations. Never letting us out of their sight for a second, watching everything over our shoulder."
"How the devil were we supposed to rationally do our work" comments the 64-year old Belgian.
Chris Charlier, who heads a team of 15 Atomic Energy inspectors of the IAEA have been inspecting the Islamic Republic's nuclear program since 2003.
For the first time a Viennese based inspector speaks openly and under his own name about the conditions under which UN inspectors try to bring to light the darkness surrounding the Iranian nuclear program.
The reason for his outspoken comments is because since April of this year he is for all practical purposes unemployed. Responsible for this is his Vienna based direct superior, Mohammad El-Baradei.
When Baradei went to Tehran in April for consultations, the chief negotiator of the Shiite theocracy, Ali Larijani gave him an ultimatum to fire Chris Charlier.
Mohammad El-Baradei acted swiftly in accepting the demand.
Chris Charlier had made himself highly unpopular in Tehran since 2003. "I am not a politician, I am a technician and as such the only thing which interests me is whether Iran's nuclear program is a civil or military one", Charlier states. "The inspections have to reach an unambiguous conclusion".
Now, why would the IAEA kowtow to Iranian demands? Oil for food ring a bell? Saddam wasn't hte only dictator with a large checkbook with which to blind the hopelessly corrupt UN. Of course, I don't know if el-Baradei is bribed, stupid or an Iranian agent, but in any case, his actions as head of the IAEA show that the UN is entirely unreliable as a monitor of WMD proliferation.
Also, for the zillionth time we have proof-positive of the uselessness of negotiations with closed, totalitarian societies. As long as the Iranian regime is as it is, we simply will not know what they are up to, and we can place no reliance on agreements they make with us. Corrupt, power mad and entirely unresponsive to the will of the people, the only thing we can be sure of is that Iranian government actions will be done with a mind to whatever most benefits the tyrants to run Iran.
The whole Iran nuclear dance has so far been a farce - but there is reality, and President Bush lives in it. The dance, I'll be bound, is soon to come to an end.

Didn't we agree to furnish Iran with "single purpose" nuclear reactors?
Georgia,
It's all sabre-rattling at this point. We have absolutely no clue what is or isn't going on over there, we can't even pin-point which of the thousands of "targets" actually are doing any of the research.
This is a case of positioning ourselves to justify a "limited" role of instigating dissident groups within the country, and if that fails, having rapid reaction forces to "help our allies" overthrow the theocrats.
It's going to be sticky, it really depends on how they frame the issue, that is why they are trying so hard to give the iranian president enough rope to run with. IMO, they don't have nukes, and are probably years from weaponizing the stuff, rather than months, but we have vindicated their rhetoric by putting it on the world stage--Zarqawi-like--and having him play into our trap of blustering to make political hay back home. These guys aren't very popular, but one thing that despots can always count on is the fervor of nationalism, and that is what they are trying to cultivate right now, unfortunately, we aren't doing a good job of stopping it.
"UN's Nuclear Watchdog" should be "UN's Nuclear Chihuahua"...
...all bark, no bite.
Mark,
I'd be interested to know what you think about the following article. Scary. (scroll up)
LGF-"An interesting speculation on the date chosen by Iranian designated madman Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to respond to the latest EU-US proposals:" Why August 22?
