Nick E.,
It's time we DO start playing the blame game and let Americans know where the real problem is and who is responsible for the oil, gasoline, and natural gas shortages, the high gas prices, the high heating oil prices, the high energy costs... and the inflation and higher cost of living, food, and goods because of it!
Because of the liberal Democrats, TRILLIONS of American DOLLARS and MILLIONS of American JOBS will end up overseas -- supporting their economies and jobs and even helping build the economies and military of our enemies like Iran and Venezuela!
Yes, it is the liberal Democrats who are mostly responsible. They have been obstructing and ...blocking access to America's enormous energy reserves for YEARS ...blocking new refineries, ...blocking wind energy (in Ted Kennedy's back yard), ...blocking coastal and off shore drilling, ...blocking ANWR, ...blocking more nuclear power plants, ...blocking, ...blocking, ...blocking ...blocking!
It takes time to bring America's reserves into full production. America doesn't need to wait until the next crisis before we get moving. Hopefully Congress and the American people put the liberals and enviro-wacko's on the sideline and will get on with taping America's oil, coal, and gas reserves... along with nuclear, wind, solar, bio-fuels, geothermal, fuel cells, hydrogen, and others. America should have started doing this years ago -- and would have if liberal Democrats hadn't blocked all of the efforts!
Check the various estimates and articles on the Internet. Estimates vary, but everything I have read says there are still huge oil reserves around the world, including existing and producing fields, deep wells, undersea, oil sands, oil shale, and others.
A recent CNN article -- "Ending the End of Oil" -- provides a good summary.
At the current prices for oil, production from oil sands, oil shale, deep sea wells, and new technologies for recovery from existing fields is economically profitable...
"... the U.S. Geological Survey estimate that the energy sources and technologies ... could produce 4 trillion barrels of oil--more than all the world's proven petroleum reserves right now."
"... nearly 300 billion barrels of oil still rest below the sea worldwide."
"... with an estimated 175 billion barrels of accessible oil buried in the tarlike sands ... Canada sits atop one of the largest known oil reserves in the world, two-thirds the size of Saudi Arabia's estimated 263 billion barrels."
"... Government scientists have estimated that the United States is sitting on 2.6 trillion barrels of reserves in oil shale form, spread across an area of nearly 16,000 square miles of federal and privately owned land. The oil-rich terrain is the single largest untapped petroleum reserve in the world."
"... There are still hundreds of billions of barrels of oil stranded in existing reservoirs ... [potentially] 377 billion barrels of recoverable reserves."
And then there is ANWR with an estimates of 30 billion barrels or more which will help in the short term while the oil sands, oil shale, and other technologies are ramping up production.
In addition to our oil reserves, America has enormous coal reserves which can be burned directly, or converted to a more conventional fuel through gasification and liquification.
America has enough oil, coal, and gas reserves to meet current demands for the next 300 years give or take. Who knows. America might even become an oil exporter again!!!
So what's the big problem? Liberal Democrats and enviro-wacko's. GET them OUT OF THE WAY so we can PRODUCE America's ENERGY needs IN AMERICA!

Death for Somali Muslims who shirk prayers
Somali Muslims who fail to perform daily prayers will be killed in accordance with Qur’anic law under a new edict issued by a leading cleric in the Islamic courts union that controls Mogadishu.
The requirement for Muslims to observe the five-times daily ritual under penalty of death was announced late on Wednesday and appears to confirm the hard-line nature of the increasingly powerful Sharia courts in the capital.
“He who does not perform prayers will be considered as infidel and Sharia law orders that that person be killed,” said Sheikh Abdalla Ali, a founder and high-ranking official in the Supreme Islamic Council of Somalia.
“Sharia law orders the killing of any Muslim person when he fails to perform prayers,” he said in an address at the opening of a new Islamic court in Mogadishu’s southern Gubta neighbourhood.

We are at the doorsteps of a major energy crisis within the next 2-7 years. We are about to experience for the first time ever an average net loss in energy availability per capita. Meanwhile, you are focusing your time on gays, Al Gore and Cindy Sheehan. This blog constantly blasts the MSM for its biases-and rightly so-but look at the keyword search I did today of B4B. Nothing on education, nothing on energy except under global warming, nothing on oil, except about a deal between Chavez and N. Korea.
Only the comments on this blog attract me, the "B4B Team" posts are largely cheerleading, insignificant, trivial and reactive. Reactive. As soon as the oil crisis really gets underway, which Republicans and Democrats both agree is about to happen soon, this blog will react with tons of posts.
I said it is 2006, not 2008 or 2010.

I guess you missed it. We have talked about energy and oil several times.
I blame the liberal Democrats for much of America's dependence on foreign oil, high gas prices, high heating oil prices, high energy costs, and trillions of dollars that have and will go to foreign nations which supply our oil -- money that could have and should have gone to American petroleum suppliers, American businesses, American workers, American families, and American taxes -- taxes that could have gone to America's education system and to increase American's incomes!
Liberals Democrats are largely responsible for high gasoline prices. Liberal Democrats and environmentalists have blocked the efforts to drill for more of America's oil, to build more American refineries, to produce the gasoline in America, coal liquification and gasification, oil shale development, more natural gas, drilling off our coasts, and drilling in ANWR. Ted Kennedy even opposes wind power off the shores of his "sailing resort".
Liberal [progressive] Democrats have and continue to block drilling in ANWR and near our coast lines. Estimates vary, but ANWR alone has the potential to produce billions of barrels of oil. Some estimates say as much as 30 billion barrels. That's oil that could have been ready to satisfy our needs during emergencies and shortages -- like Katrina, Gulf hurricanes, Iran's threats, and others.
At the current price of oil, that's trillions of dollars that have gone or will go overseas -- even to our enemies -- and that worsens our balance of payments. If it had not been for liberal Democrats blocking attempts to produce American oil, those dollars and jobs would have remained in America!
Do the math, 30 billion barrels from ANWR at $75 per barrel is 2.25 TRILLION DOLLARS. Even if it produces only 15 billion barrels, that's still MORE THAN ONE TRILLION DOLLARS that could and should remain in America. And there are potentially many more tens of billions of barrels available in other areas within the United States. That's EVEN MORE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS that could have and should have remained in America -- BLOCKED BY DEMOCRATS!
And then there are all of the jobs associated with American oil and gas. Some projections estimate ANWR alone could produce as many as 735,000 jobs and billions and billions of dollars in revenue to the state and federal government. A study from by National Defense Council Foundation projects that ANWR could produce 1,000,000 new jobs for Americans in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
And where are these jobs going -- along with the TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS in oil revenue, salaries, taxes, and American dollars? To Iran, Venezuela, and other nations to develop their economies, provide them with jobs, and develop their military!
It takes time to locate, drill, produce, refine (to include building new refineries), and distribute oil and gasoline. Even if we start now, it will take years to bring production up to its full potential. We could have had that oil, gas, gasoline now -- IF liberal Democrats had not blocked the efforts in the past. We could have kept many of those trillions of dollars in America and held down our balance of payments -- IF liberal Democrats had not blocked the efforts in the past.
You want to help America's balance of payments, jobs, and tax revenues, then start drilling in ANWR and start producing America's oil! And, drill for oil all along our coastlines, not 50 miles out as the liberal Democrats want!
Republicans should start a 24/7 campaign to educate the American voters about the real villains -- the Democrats -- who are driving up our gas, heating oil, energy prices, adding to inflation, and increasing our balance of payments by trillions of dollars!

AAR,
Let’s not play the blame game. It doesn’t solve anything. Our dependence on foreign oil is because 1) our domestic production peaked 35 years ago and 2) demand grows as the economy grows. It’s correct that drilling in ANWR and off-shore derricks would be a short-term solution (they would prolong the plateau of domestic oil supply to retrofit our economy), but that ignore the problem. Our economy is currently in an impossible situation, although it is running well now, it is based on an every-increasing supply of cheap and available oil. ANWR won’t provide a long-term solution, but it will help us in the short term.
President Bush confirms what I am saying. He says we are addicted to oil. I interpret that as an admonition to cut the addiction, not feed it. Dick Cheney backs up my argument, and he doesn’t blame the liberals for the problem that is really going to begin opening up around 2010. That is when there will be a 3% decline annually in oil and a 2% increase in demand. The 3% is a conservative analysis, that may be underestimated. He mentions the Middle East as the prime area to invest in oil, not North America.
I think we as a nation are so energy illiterate, that we are throwing our hopes into anything to get us through the coming energy collapse. We offer all these emotional arguments, but that solves nothing. It produces nothing. As James Howard Kunstler said, we are sleepwalking into the future.
So, you are right about ANWR, there’s a lot of oil there and maybe it should be looked into. But, that only prolongs an inevitable peak. I’m talking about the point at which oil supply can no longer meet demand. At that point, oil-dependent economies crumble and you know in your gut what that means.
Ash,
I've heard the statement made "wisdom comes with age"!!

Here's a terrific heart-warming story from Iraq:
Father Who Sought Revenge in Iraq Is Back Home
'I Believe the Lord Changed My Heart,' He Says After Ceremony for Son
By KATE BRUMBAC, AP
ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. (July 7) - National Guard member Joe Johnson volunteered to go to Iraq to avenge his son's death. But what he saw there caused a change of heart. Johnson was horrified by the extreme poverty. The friendliness of the people and the grateful smiles of Iraqi children weakened his desire for revenge and made him want to help instead.
At a ceremony Friday, two months after Johnson's return from his eight-month tour, the state of Georgia dedicated an rural north Georgia interchange to the memory of his son. Justin Johnson, 22, was killed by a roadside bomb in April 2004, just 12 days after arriving in Iraq.
"I believe the Lord changed my heart because I do have a heart for the children," Johnson said after the ceremony.
His wife, Jan, said she told her husband before he left that killing Iraqis was never going to bring Justin back. However, she recognized that going to Iraq was something he had to do to start healing. When he called his wife from Iraq, Joe told her about passing out candy and school supplies to the children.
"The old Joe is coming back," she said to herself. "It was a good thing. The kids won him over." Joe acknowledged the transformation. He credited God with knowing what he needed.
"The kids changed me," he said. "I still had hate in my heart for Muslim people, for the insurgents, but the Lord changed me."

AAR,
Do you have any idea which metro areas consume the most Middle East oil per capita? Do you know which metros consume the least per capita? The most liberal cities tend to be those that consume the least Mid East oil per capita.
http://www.ewg.org/reports/stuckinthesand/execsumm.php
I haven’t researched your argument about the democrats stopping every initiative to produce domestically, so I can’t comment on that. It sounds like you have a good argument there, that it would be profitable in the short run. How many years of oil do you suspect is out there in North America (recoverable and economically viable)?
Yes, there certainly is still plenty of oil out there, but at what cost? Remember, our economy demands an ever-increasing supply. I understand that the higher price of crude will allow previously unprofitable oil expeditions to become reality, but again, at what cost? Nothing else really matters. Tell me what the gain will be versus the investment made. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.
Our entire monetary system is dependent on INCREASING supplies of CHEAP energy. Otherwise, how can you pay off a loan? If energy is less plentiful—as in the Depression—people cannot pay their loans off. Businesses cannot grow, cannot sell, cannot hire.
Remember that: supply of energy must be more plentiful in the future and at a low price.
It doesn’t matter how many barrels are right here if the energy input to extract, refine and transport a barrel exceeds the energy of the barrel gained. Read Dick Cheney's statements on the site I have below. As I said, he mentions the Middle East as where our effort should be, not North America. I don’t think you responded to that.
The U.S. Geological Survey--if you research Peak Oil, you’ll learn—is the most optimistic and exaggerated source. They estimated US domestic peak to happen in 2100, back in 1975, 5 years after the peak!!! I wouldn’t take their data seriously. Also, 4 trillion is the most wildly-optimistic of the estimates. Most conservative estimates are 2 or sometimes 3 trillion barrels.
I think you see what I’m saying is that it’s not an issue of running out of oil so much as a supply/demand problem.
I think we as a people are truly sleepwalking into the future with our miracle alternatives as a cocaine addiction. What are your conservative metros like Nashville doing to prepare? Using the most oil per capita. What is liberal New York doing? Using the least.
I seriously believe the United States is at the doorsteps of another depression, far worse than that of the 1930s. Things are already starting to change, this is not something happening off in the future.

Jeremiah, I love ya brother, but you've got to work on your punctuation. Never use an apostrophe before the "s" in pluralized words, and use commas when needed. For example, your statement, WE'VE GOT TO FEED THE SOUL PEOPLE!!, back in the 1970's, would have meant "the black people are hungry." I think you meant "WE'VE GOT TO FEED THE SOUL, PEOPLE!!
Anyway, I totally endorse your message. You are serious, aren't you? Not a spoofer?

Nick E.,
Even though current estimates project that there are enough oil, gas, and coal in various forms to satisfy our energy needs for many years -- hundreds years -- those will eventually run out in the fairly distant future. The rational estimates and projections I have seen do not indicate the issue is any where near as urgent or critical as many want us to believe. Even the more conservative estimates would satisfy our energy needs for a hundred years or more!
I agree that we should and must work on alternative and new sources of relatively cheap and plentiful energy. I would like to see a national effort something like we did with the space program; although, I can't say that private efforts won't also be just as successful. Perhaps we just need to coordinate and help fund the private research. I'll have to hear more pro's and con's.
In the meantime, we need to get on with developing our own oil, gas, and coal reserves while working on new energy sources and transitioning to those over a period of many years. While we are making that transition, there is no reason America should be sending trillions of our dollars to purchase foreign oil, billions of dollars in potential taxes, and millions of our jobs to other nations... especially those who are or could become our enemies. There is no reason we should be building up the economies of other nations with our dollars when we could be spending them here on our own oil, gas, and coal reserves.
It's time the American people understand that DEMOCRATS are the one's who have and continue to block those efforts. The DEMOCRATS are responsible for TRILLIONS of DOLLARS and MILLIONS of JOBS that will eventually be GIVEN to OTHER COUNTRIES. That's TRILLIONS of DOLLARS that will add to our TRADE DEFICIT and WEAKEN OUR DOLLAR even more!
