I live in Colorado and have been enduring much more of the Churchill saga than most of you have had to. And to me, the worst thing about him, personally, is that he teaches things that are not true.
Now, I can understand and agree with the argument that college is to teach kids HOW to think, more than WHAT to think. But Churchill, and thousands like him, are propagandists for an ardently anti-American agenda, and to accomplish it they teach absolute lies as the truth. They do not teach the truth and then introduce other positions or theories for comparison and discussion.
And at the University of Colorado, and at most other colleges and universities, the monopoly held by radical Liberals has stifled free speech and limited the educational options of students. While braying about "Freedom of Speech" these storm troopers try to stop any speech by anyone not on their side of the political aisle. When David Horowitz was scheduled to speak at Metropolitan State College in Denver, the lefties tried to get the adminstration to cancel his speech, then tried to get students to boycott his speech, then tried to stop people from entering the auditorium, and then tried to silence him by heckling him. Horowitz' speech? It was about freedom of speech on college campuses.
Students are penalized for expressing conservative points of view, being openly ridiculed in class and even having their grades lowered if they do not line up with the Liberals.
Churchill is only the greasy, unkempt, ignorant, incoherent, tip of the Liberal iceberg in academia. His only redeeming quality is that he has brought the ugly underbelly of higher education into view.
And he has a history of violence, as well, in addition to his falsifying of his resume and his plagerism. He has threatened people who have tried to stand up to him.

Churchill is an employee. He works at the pleasure of his employer; as all of us employees do. He has lied, even about his academic background, and plagiarized and brought disgrace on the university. All are legitimate bases for termination and he should have no recourse. Firing him would help improve the university's image; doing nothing will continue to erode it. As it should.

I think a college should have a liberal bias. In the sense that it challenges students to think for themselves. That it challenges the status quo. The existing dogmas that can stand the scrutiny stand. Weak or destructive philosophy is revealed and discarded. That is the way we can improve as a society.

Ash, What Crap!
That’s the usual superior condescension we’ve come to expect from elitist liberals like you. Liberalism is a dogma that allows for no dissention, and no deviation from the socialist orthodoxy. Liberals don’t “think for themselves” they lack the capacity to review facts rationally; there is only emotionalism; feelings are more important than facts, and intentions more desirable than results. Go graze on some tree bark, hippy.

Mark,
Speaking from personal experience, collages and universities recruit professors and grad students that bring something to academia that would be desirable to the alumni and university sponsors. The object is to have a recruiting tool for incoming students; awards, accolades and recognition within their field is paramount to the recruiting process.
Once in, the faculty doesn’t make waves until they’ve been tenured, then all hell breaks loose. A NASA scientist with credentials longer than a German giving directions, can become a lightning rod by espousing outrageous thesis and getting headlines that were unavailable to them when they actually had to produce something for NASA.
Still, the publicity these loose cannons bring to the University is normally desirable, as it draws attention to the university, sometimes unwanted, but always free publicity.
Like the monkey’s paw, be careful what you wish for; the Ward Churchill’s that get your institution on the front page of every paper in the world are near impossible to rid yourself of when the do begin to truly embarrass the institution.

Parker and Wade,
Ann Coulter is in the marketplace of ideas, if you don't like her thesis, don't buy her books. A professor is paid by the taxpayers, and is by definition required to follow by the students also paying for the privilege. The professors are also required by contract to be accurate and truthful; Churchill is neither.

Bane,
I essentially agree with what you’re saying and I'm not arguing that he should be fired. However, I just don’t understand how certain ideas stated by Churchill make him a “wicked jerk” while the same ideas by Coulter are defended.
Posted by: Parker at July 7, 2006 02:09 PM
Parker,
It's the forum; Ann Coulter can, and does make outrageous claims but does so at risk to her own financial state. No one is required to listen to, or agree with her ideas. She can be dismissed as easily as I can dismiss TEO and his ridiculous assertions. Personally, I enjoy Coulter’s sardonic wit; her absurdities are intentional.
First Amendment rights have severe limits in the classroom, teachers (or professors) are not permitted fabricate evidence, plagiarize other sources, or misrepresent truth in the course of a lesson. The fact that Churchill’s students must accept his version of facts in order to pass his course makes his outrageous claims that much more egregious. He is free to say whatever he wants, outside of the classroom; and we have every right to call him on his absurdities; but to claim academic freedom as an excuse to lie is not acceptable at that, or any other institution of learning.
