Does America Run On Dunkin?

Yesterday, President Bush introduced the Basic Pilot program, which is "a comprehensive immigration plan is to give employers the tools necessary to determine whether or not the workers they're looking for are here legally in America." I was amused by the fact that he visited a Dunkin Donuts to highlight the program.

Anyone who knows me is aware of the fact I am a coffee drinker. Everyday when I go to work, I stop at Starbucks -- not Dunkin Donuts -- to get my coffee. It is basically the only coffee I drink. Some people call me a coffee snob... that may be, but hey, I love a good cup of coffee.

Anyways, when some people say to me they like Dunkin Donuts better, I often respond with a joke about how at least at Starbucks I can order in English... Okay, granted some drinks have Italian names, and I often order a grande or a venti dark roast, but the people who serve me are Americans who speak English... But, I guess there is some truth to my joke... however... I was somewhat pleased to learn that Dunkin' Brands Inc. "has announced it will require all of its franchisees to participate in the Basic Pilot program," which they did voluntarily.

I'm glad to see DD's participating in this program. It certainly won't make me drink their coffee, but, I hope others follow their lead in participating in this program.

UPDATE: At a recent event, Senator Joe Biden said, “You cannot go into a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.” National Journal's Hotline Blog has the video... Think a Republican could get away with saying something like that?

I like DD coffee, but I like Starbucks slightly better. Especially the French Roast (or should I say American Roast?). :)

Light and sweet with a crullah'--quickfast!

Deseo un café grande por favor.

Gracias.

Just in case there are no Starbucks around and you're feeling a java jones.

LOL wait.

"In case there are no Starbucks around"

What was I thinking?

Nevermind lol

Why would you give Starbucks your money? They are the worst secularist progressive corporate nightmare possible. You might as well make a donation to Planned Parenthood.

Find a local brewer/roaster and keep your money in town. Location in this one instance isn't everything.

Location is not the issue. I like the quality of Starbucks and their standards. Makes for a mighty fine cup o' joe.

I dunno, being a college student... $3 on a cup of coffee doesn't sound too good to me...

About Durbin's comment...

the sentiment is more or less true... except, in Georgia, we have more Spanish-oriented broken english in our dunkin donuts.

Georgia Frawg, you can buy a bag of Starbucks coffee at your local Wal*Mart Supercenter for about $7 or so. Get yourself a $30 coffee maker and you're all set.

Joe Biden...another tolerant liberal gift that just keeps on giving.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 6, 2006 04:40 PM

Georgia Frawg a college student....SHOCKING.

Georgia, the good news is that in about 10 years you will be conservative. You can fight it, we all did...most of us were liberal to some extent in college (I was very liberal)...when you get out of Athens or wherever you are at, then you hit the real world, start paying real taxes, start looking at what your gov't is doing....

We'll see you in about a decade.

LOL

Whether the sentiment is accurate, if a Republican had said that there would be howls of protest over the unfairness of saying it. It would be called descrimanatory, and politically incorrect, and insensitive of the person who had said it. Amazingly, none of that seems to have happened to Durbin for saying such a thing.

Posted by: kjstrouble [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 6, 2006 04:47 PM

Absolutely KJS...absolutely.

Republicans always have been held to much higher standards. Democrats say this crap all the time and nothing ever happens. A Republican says it and the Hague is notified. Most people see through the double standard.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 6, 2006 04:50 PM

Republicans always held to a higher standard. Democrats can be KKK members and end up on the Senate. Democrats can screw interns, rape women and sexually harrass them and end up President.

If you're a Republican and sexually harrass someone, you are thrown before the Hague.

Actually, Biden's right-all of the Dunkin Donuts in our area are owned and run by Indians. They must not eat the donuts tho, as they're very skinny looking Indians. That Biden- always got a clever line on hand, what a card!

Posted by: kritter at July 6, 2006 11:46 PM

What a card! Biden's 100% correct- all the Dunkin Donuts around here are run by Indians! Guess they don't eat their donuts, because they never seem to gain any weight.

Warrior-Biden is a mainstream, centrist Democrat. Of course to you anyone left of Barry Goldwater is a lib!

Also Starbucks provides a very generous health care package for it's employees. Full or part time.

Make that a venti.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 7, 2006 12:01 PM

Gosh, George W. Bush at Dunkin' Donuts touting the immigrant experience and the American Way. Dunkin' Donuts, owned in part by...whodathunkit...The Carlyle Group. Out of curiosity, what is the starting wage at Dunkin' Donuts -- how many hours does a new employee receive per week and how easy would it be to live on that wage? Also, what is the percentage of high school students working for Dunkin' Donuts? I'm no fan of Starbucks, but I know they treat their new employees with a modicum of respect and allow them to make a reasonable living (not good, just reasonable).
