Independence Day

...Ishall ask your indulgence while I express with more lively sensibility, the following most ardent wishes of my heart.

That party disputes, among all the friends and lovers of their country may subside, or, as the wisdom of Providence has ordained that men, on the same subjects, shall not always think alike, that charity and benevolence when they happen to differ may so far shed their benign influence as to banish those invectives which proceed from illiberal prejudices and jealousy.

That as the allwise dispensor of human blessings has favored no Nation of the Earth with more abundant, and substantial means of happiness than United America, that we may not be so ungrateful to our Creator; so wanting to ourselves; and so regardless of Posterity, as to dash the cup of beneficence which is thus bountifully offered to our acceptance.

That we may fulfil with the greatest exactitude all our engagements: foreign and domestic, to the utmost of our abilities whensoever, and in whatsoever manner they are pledged: for in public, as in private life, I am persuaded that honesty will forever be found to be the best policy.

That we may avoid connecting ourselves with the Politics of any Nation, farther than shall be found necessary to regulate our own trade; in order that commerce may be placed upon a stable footing; our merchants know their rights; and the government the ground on which those rights are to be supported.

That every citizen would take pride in the name of an American, and act as if he felt the importance of the character by considering that we ourselves are now a distinct Nation the dignity of which will be absorbed if not annihilated, if we enlist ourselves (further than our obligations may require) under the banners of any other Nation whatsoever. And moreover, that we would guard against the Intriegues of any and every foreign Nation who shall endeavor to intermingle (however covertly and indirectly) in the internal concerns of our country; or who shall attempt to prescribe rules for our policy with any other power, if there be no infraction of our engagements with themselves, as one of the greatest evils that can befal us as a people; for whatever may be their professions, be assured fellow Citizens and the event will (as it always has) invariably prove, that Nations as well as individuals, act for their own benefit, and not for the benefit of others, unless both interests happen to be assimilated (and when that is the case there requires no contract to bind them together). That all their interferences are calculated to promote the former; and in proportion as they succeed, will render us less independant. In a word, nothing is more certain than that, if we receive favors, we must grant favors; and it is not easy to decide beforehand under such circumstances as we are, on which side the balance will ultimately terminate; but easy indeed is it to foresee that it may involve us in disputes and finally in War, to fulfil political alliances. Whereas, if there be no engagements on our part, we shall be unembarrassed, and at liberty at all times, to act from circumstances, and the dictates of Justice, sound policy, and our essential Interests.

That we may be always prepared for War, but never unsheath the sword except in self defence so long as Justice and our essential rights, and national respectability can be preserved without it; for without the gift of prophecy, it may safely be pronounced, that if this country can remain in peace 20 years longer: and I devoutly pray that it may do so to the end of time; such in all probability will be its population, riches, and resources, when combined with its peculiarly happy and remote Situation from the other quarters of the globe, as to bid defiance, in a just cause, to any earthly power whatsoever.

That whensoever and so long as we profess to be Neutral, let our public conduct whatever our private affections may be, accord therewith; without suffering partialities on one hand, or prejudices on the other to controul our Actions. A contrary practice is not only incompatible with our declarations, but is pregnant with mischief, embarrassing to the Administration, tending to divide us into parties, and ultimately productive of all those evils and horrors which proceed from faction, and above all,

That our Union may be as lasting as time; for while we are encircled in one band, we shall possess the strength of a Giant and there will be none who can make us affraid. Divide, and we shall become weak; a prey to foreign Intriegues and internal discord; and shall be as miserable and contemptible as we are now enviable and happy. And lastly:

That the several departments of Government may be preserved in their utmost Constitutional purity, without any attempt of one to encroach on the rights or privileges of another; that the Genl and State governmts may move in their propr Orbits; And that the authorities of our own constituting may be respected by ourselves as the most certain means of having them respected by foreigners... - George Washington, September 17, 1796

Thank you for the reminder of the wisdom of one of our founding fathers, and of the philosophies upon which they build this nation.

I strongly encourage you all to listen to Hugh Hewitt on the 4th, in hopes that he will repeat his amazingly inspirational July 4th show about the Founding Fathers and about the influence of God on this country.

And if he does repeat it, please write or call and ask him to make it available for purchase. I don't get Hugh's local station in my somewhat remote location. I caught this show a couple of years ago when I happened to have to be in my car for three hours in a city where he is broadcast, and that night while watching the fireworks I was moved to tears, thinking of what I had learned that day. It is a very powerful and moving three hours, and one we should all hear.

Almiranta,

Our leftwing friends have been rather diligent in their efforts to denigrate Washington, but he was the essential man without whom America would not exist...

By the way, when has "Not in keeping with the spirit of the thread" been a criteria for deletion? Is that in the 'secret' rules section of your blog? Getting nervous are we?

Mark, no offense, but you seem very trigger happy on the censoring of posts. What's up with that? I suppose I'll be banned next eh? What's going on here?

George Washington. He certainly could have been king if he'd wanted. Instead, he set the precedent of two terms in office as President.

I often draw a comparison between Washington and the United States at the end of World War Two. Seventy aircraft carriers (yes. seventy), more than half of the world gross output, millions of men under arms, and - atomic weapons. What OTHER country would not have just taken over the world? France? Germany? USSR? Britain? None of them.

Instead, we rebuilt THEIR economies. Set up an international organization to promote international understanding. And generally, de-armed. This way of thinking is directly traceable back to George Washington and the founding fathers.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 08:35 PM

One should keep in mind Washington's aversion to a standing army and the dangers it encompasses. This should be coupled with Eisenhower's warning about the Military-Industrial-Congressional complex. But, no need to actually understand history eh?

Posted by: 3moreyears [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 08:41 PM

George Washington was president when, except for artillery the common man had the same or better weapons than most Army's. Look at the victory at Saratoga for insight. Also, invading Armies had to travel in relatively small and sail driven watercraft or walk in across mountain ranges and wilderness. An altogether different situation than exists today. There were different views about a standing Navy (you may note).

It’s funny – I graduated college with a 3.96 GPA (magna cum laude) and actually read about history quite a bit. But, well liberal spells prejudice doesn’t it? Really 3my – your comment is absurd. Is history in NEXT semesters class plan?

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 08:50 PM

Mark,

I find it ironic you would choose Washington's Farewell as your icon for this 4th.

Not only does half of the speech go on to argue against the factioning of the people into political parties, but explcitly denounces the hatred and animosity which comes from those parties.

Secondly, it also warns us against the entanglement of our nation in foreign affairs, especially in blind hubris, and political wrangling that may put us into a situation where we go head-fist into a war which was not ours to fight.

That Washington was a pretty darn smart guy.

Posted by: Third Eye Open [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 08:51 PM

Kahn, let's see, "But, well liberal spells prejudice doesn't it?" isn't a grammatically correct sentence. The only reason I mention this is your allegedly high GPA. What's your major? Psychology? Business? English? Mine is EE. GPA 3.83. Magna Cum Laude also. You're probably one of those we laughed at because you couldn't 'do' math/science. Had to settle huh? Can you spell Hamiltonian? 'Course not. Idiot! Like I said in one of my deleted posts above, you guys have been found out and no one's buying it.

Posted by: 3moreyears [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 09:04 PM

3my - This blog is a BLOG and not a term paper. Thank you though for showing a typical liberal tactic. You changed the subject and insulted me to denigrate my post.

I majored in doing your mother.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 09:38 PM

I hate to agree with TEO - but he's right about the destructive divisions. TEO, what you think about 3my? Are his/her opinions constructive additions to the political discourse?

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 09:49 PM

Kahn,

I'm pleasding the fifth on this one, it isn't my fight, and you know just as well as anyone that all of us, at one time or another has used someone's grammar to denigrate their point.

Is it just me, or does beer just not seem as wonderful when it isn't football or hockey season?

Posted by: Third Eye Open [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 10:00 PM

TEO,

I stopped drinking about 27 years ago. It was just about halfway through my Marine years. I don't think I could have gone on to college and had a sucessful career otherwise.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 1, 2006 10:51 PM

As the 4th approaches, I hope for one day we can all put our differences aside and agree we have it pretty darn good in this country. As I have written elsewhere this gives us more duty to help those born in less fortunate situations.

When the tide rises all boats rise. I'm old fashioned that way. As long as someone in the world goes to bed hungry I cannot be totally satisfied with what I am doing with my life.

Peace. God blesses the world.

I can only hope and pray that this 4th of July we can all come together, reflecting on the great words of our founders, and return to principle and based on the constitution. loyalty to any party or one man, should be a far off second when there is loyatly to the constitution and our great republic.

Ok, pissing match over - so, lets say some nice things about George Washington and the United States.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 2, 2006 02:29 AM

Mark, your redactus truculentus has rendered this thread worthless. But, hey, it's your blog.

I admire your testicular fortitude, though, quoting George who also said:

"As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality. "

You got some 'splainin' to do, Lucy...

George Washington was a brillant man and a devout Christian. Thank God for General George Washington and for all of America's Founding Fathers!!!
:)

George Washington quotes:

"...reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle..." -Farewell Address

“ It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible.”

"It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favors."

Posted by: Freedom1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 2, 2006 03:38 AM

Ash,

It is a nice thought to want all people in the world not to go to bed hungry. Unfortunately, that has never happened, and according to Jesus, probably never will. We can strive for the justice our Founding Fathers sought, but as human beings we will never be perfect. Maybe that is why Washington believed “ It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible.” as Freedom1 posted above.

If polls had been in existence in 1776, the majority of the people would have been against the Revolution! We would not be free if it was not for TRUE LEADERS! Libs love to cite polls when it is in their favor.......also "leading" by poll results have gotten us to where we are today.....ahem...ala Bill Clinton. Fighting terrorism was the furthest thing from his mind and his own appointees at the FBI and CIA say so!

A true leader does what is right....not what is popular, ahem, ala Bill Clinton. But if it was not for this, he would not have fought for Welfare Reform....after being informed by James Carville that he would not win re-election without pushing Welfare Reform, Clinton relented and pushed it through.

Oh and .... "...we go head-fist into a war which was not ours to fight." - I love the libs blind support of Clinton going into the Balkans WHEN IT WAS NOT OUR FIGHT! There are common threads to both conflicts with the only exception being that a REPUBLICAN is in the White House now.

Washington and others warned of a far reaching powerful government......which party faction constantly calls for government regulation, investigation, higher CONFISCATORY taxes, protection of the death tax, and calls for government provided health care, education and endless social programs.......?????????????????

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

If George Washington were alive today, he would, in his own gentlemanly way, bitch-slap today's liberals.

I rest my case....

I can only say that there was no better person to start a country than with George Washington, He was a man who had his hopes set NOT on things below but on things ABOVE! He said that there would be "no assistance to bigotry of any form by those who hate us" and as you can see most liberal's here apply bigotry MOST LIBERALLY!

The Liberal's jurisprudence in their wild world views spouting their playbook nick nacks of hate towards good honest people like GW, and GB Just goes to show their foolish, far fetched, mindless, pointless self pity!

And I can only look at and reiterate about it the same way that George Washington said it by saying I WILL NOT assist anyone(mostly liberal's) in their blind hate for America!

We christian conservative's jurisdict NOT by some Godless fool liberal judge, but by one who's power is far greater than ANY judge here on earth and He's the reason why we are ALL still here today, and that's why I'm thankful for people like George Washington and George Bush, George Wahsington was a man of God and so is George Bush!

Geoge Bush is trying very hard to bring unity to America, But the liberal's don't seem to want to listen to any thing good that has to be said, they have to have it their way or else, and to beat everything they criticize the president for trying to do the christian thing of helping people regain freedom!

Liberal's want control so bad they can't stand it, all so they can let sin have it's way in America!

The liberal's vision for America is not what it is made up to be, it's not a vision of victory it's a vision of defeat!!

They want to defeat christian's to their graves, and then let our children grow up to be Godless hetherns, and deprive them of the true necessities of life!

Moral values of America have went tremendously down hill for the very simple fact that liberal's have condoned sin so much in the last two decades and have given in to the ONE JUDGE court rulings so much that society is slipping into traumatized coma!

Christian's had bettered wake up! and hang on to the last few threads of hope that we have, and that is by voting for people like George Bush, I have to be honest with you George is probably one of the last truly good men in America that we will ever see as our president, I just hope that MAYBE there will be another one like him in the coming elections, and a matter of fact WE ALL BETTER HOPE there is another one running for president like George, because if there isn't then you can just look for and count on a sharp rise in crime and sinful acts!

Let's assist liberal's by just saying NO to their Godless hate filled agenda for America!

All we can do though is HOPE for the best this coming election year!!

Meanwhile just keep energizing your friends of the importance of getting those votes out, and keep America running!!

kjs, Of course you are right, but I'll hold on to that thought anyway! You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. (J Lennon)

Kahn, thank you for your comments on the restraint of America. Colin Powell once made a very moving and powerful speech in which he said,
in response to those who think the U.S. is inclined to global imperialism...

"When all those conflicts were over, what did we do? Did we stay and conquer? Did we say, "Okay, we defeated Germany. Now Germany belongs to us? We defeated Japan, so Japan belongs to us"? No. What did we do? We built them up. We gave them democratic systems which they have embraced totally to their soul. And did we ask for any land? No, the only land we ever asked for was enough land to bury our dead. And that is the kind of nation we are."

I think one of the most powerful phrases I ever heard was that one..."No, the only land we ever asked for was enough land to bury our dead."
