Raising the Stakes in Gaza

I don't know how entirely accurate this report is, but I think it does indicate how intense the situation is getting over there:

ISRAEL last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh if Hamas militants did not release a captured Israeli soldier unharmed.

The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.

It came as Israeli military officials readied a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.

Hamas's Gaza-based political leaders, including Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.

Other news stories indicate that the terrorists are demanding the release of 1,000 prisoners for the release of the kidnapped IDF soldier...which is about right: one soldier is worth the lives of 1,000 terrorists. But I don't think the Israelis are interested in turning loose 1,000 men who would end up killing far more than one Israeli soldier who, when all is said and done, is a soldier and thus probably understands his possible fate in all this.

The wages of sin are death - for decades now, and especially since the Palestinian Authority was created, the leaders of the Palestinian people have fed the Palestininans on a series of sick lies about the Israelis. It look like, once again, that the Big Lie has worked - the militants on the Palestinian side don't seem to understand their position and how badly they could be crushed if Israel really exerted herself. Fed upon the lies of IDF evil and Palestinians having God on their side, it seems that at least a segment of the Palestinian population is bent on suicide.

"ISRAEL last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh if Hamas militants did not release a captured Israeli soldier unharmed."

Well, isn't that interesting. If true that would mean the Hamas terrorist government is in grave danger of being destroyed over the July 4th holiday. High time, indeed.

Also, what if the Israeli soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit is already dead? Then what? How would Israel respond?

"Israel rejects demands to free prisoners"

By Nidal al-Mughrabi
GAZA (Reuters)-Israel on Saturday rejected demands from Palestinian militants who captured an Israeli soldier to free 1,000 prisoners from its jails and kept up air strikes on Gaza aimed at winning his release.[..]

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has reiterated that there will be no deals, that either Shalit will be released or we will act to bring about his release," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev, responding to the fresh demands.

Anyone who honestly thought Isreal would release the prisoners is very foolish indeed. What I am surprised at is the restraint the IDF has shown so far. Hamas members have said in the last week that they will not recognize Isreal's right to exist, no matter what their leaders have signed. That sounded to me like they were guaranteing their own demise. God by with Corporal Shalit and the IDF.

When the US and the West pushed for a Palestinian state, I think we all made a terrible mistake. We should have known that such a state would be a terrorist state. Now we have another chance to get this right and to support our most important ally, in the war against Islamic Extremists terrorism, which is Israel. We should pray that George W. Bush and the United States government get this right now.

B.Poster, I disagree. We needed to flush reality into the open. The lie that they have been living for decades wasn't getting anyone anywhere. Now, Hamas is the government. Hamas attacks an outpost, kills, and takes prisoner. So... the government of Palestine did it.

Their first action was an overt act of war, Their mistake was in not understanding it was no longer deniable. They backed themselves into a corner. Now - there WILL be resolution (one way or the other).

Thanks for your reply to my post. Your analysis may be correct. It is shared by many who are much smarter than I am. Fully knowing my opinion may be incorrect is why I phrased my statement with "I think.":)

Hamas is so incorrigable that even the normally rabidly pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel, appeasers-R-us European Union cut off most of their funding funding. At least this is my understanding.

Btw, in the past when the Palestinians provoked the Israelis and the Israelis acted to defend themselves we would have had a chorus of Bush Administration officals, probably even the President himself, publically running to podiums every where by now imploring the Isralis to "show restraint" or declaring Israeli actions as "not helpful." To the best of my knowledge this is not being publically done now. If so, this may means that American Government officials realize just how bad Hamas is. Also, I hope and pray that they finally understand the importance of standing with Israel our most important ally is of the utmost importance. It seems clear to me that we will need to have the courage to stand with Israel at this very critical juncture. My hope and prayer is that the Bush Administration is up to this.

Israel hits Palestinian PM's Gaza office

By IBRAHIM BARZAK, Associated Press Writer
10 minutes ago
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli aircraft attacked the office of Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas in Gaza City early Sunday, witnesses said, setting the building on fire.

The Israeli army confirmed it attacked Haniyeh's office. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Witnesses said two missiles hit the south side of the building at about 1:45 a.m. local time, setting it ablaze. Because of the late hour, the building was empty, they said.

Your post is somewhat misleading. The Palestians sought the release of 1,000 WOMEN AND CHILDREN, not "men."
