Look, one question we might want to consider is why this lie persists and will persist. You've hit the nail on the head with the "still want to believe it" line.
If you believe, as a Democrat, that you stand for populism and progress and democracy, then what must your opponents be? They must be oligarchs, reactionaries, would-be tyrants. It doesn't matter if they're telling the truth, because their motives are skewed - they only want war for their gain.
Against this machine, all resistance is justified, and it isn't futile. So what if someone gets elected President on a lie, as long as that lie is part of what the people believe? The point is that the people are united, and speaking as one. Whereas in this case, where some people have "truth" and "morals" there is a disjunct between the leaders and the led, and the means used for combat have to be whatever works on the oppressed side.
You might say I'm going overboard, and I feel like I am, but that's the only sort of reasoning that can explain what we're seeing, other than saying Harry Reid is a liar and Democrats are gullible.

Here we are—we, the United States—in our fourth year of occupying that sinkhole, and it looks pretty much like the third year, or the second. Will the eighth year of our occupation, or our twelfth, look any better?”

Steve...yes, we did find WMDs in Iraq.
Found: 1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium
• Found: 1,500 gallons of chemical weapons
• Found: Roadside bomb loaded with sarin gas
• Found: 1,000 radioactive materials--ideal for radioactive dirty bombs
• Found: 17 chemical warheads--some containing cyclosarin, a nerve agent five times more powerful than sarin
etc,etc
Was it the quantity we expected, no. But yes we did find them.

There are few things funnier than watching the Libs scurry.
(Note: I need to remember to capitalize Liberal when speaking of the loony left, as it was pointed out to me that in the old days the word "liberal" was not the pejorative it is today. But in recognition that the word itself, before it got hijacked by nutcases, was a legitimate word for some very noble aspirations, from now on it will set apart by a capital L to designate its alternate meaning, which is Illiberal Self-Described Liberal Who Illustrates Tolerance By Being Totally Intolerant, Sensitivity By Being Totally Insensitive, and Liberalism By Being Totally Unaccepting Of Anything Not Far Far Far Radical Left.)
but steve and bloviator (whose comment on what he could smell reminded me of the guy who farts and then looks around to see who he can blame for the stink) and Ash and Barmy do provide some comic relief, as they frantically try to prove that the Left is not insane by posting every insane thing they can think of.
BTW, stevie, it was 16 words, they were NOT lies---he said Britain believed something, and Britain did in fact believe it. Still does. Mostly cause it's true. Even your hero, Joe Wilson, reported to the CIA that the people in Niger, while they were not absolutely sure the people trying to buy yellowcake were acting for the Iraqis, they thought they were. He lied later in his NYT piece about his report. (HEADLINE; LEFTY LIES TO TRY TO SMEAR PREs. Sorry---that's not even news anymore, just SOP.)
He merely apologized for quoting the Brits, or for not checking it out with the CIA first to see if they agreed with the Brits---I forget which. In any case, it was a non-story, though much beloved by the looniest of the left. (steve)
To this day, not one single person can prove that he lied, as no one can prove that the Brits did not believe that. Yes, Xango Annie, it might help steve if he could read, but he'd still have to be able to understand without Mother Ranty telling him what it meant and what to think about it.

Axis: Here is an earlier post from Almiranta regarding the WMD that we found in Iraq. She was right on the money, too.
We have witnesses to the construction of WMD. We have captured rockets whose only purpose was to deliver WMD. We have found sarin and anthrax, just not tons of either. We have testimony from people who helped ship heavy metal bottles marked with signs indicating poisons or toxic materials, on converted passenger planes flying established and allowed passenger schedules and routes into Syria. We have testimony from scientists who worked on nuclear projects, one of whom led US officers to illegal nuclear development machinery buried in his yard. We have satellite tapes and photos of convoys of tractor-trailers moving across the Syrian border. We have the testimony of a former high-ranking Iraqi that there were carefully established protocols for removing WMD in case of a threat to Iraq, backed by Russia and China---protocols which were enacted. We have traces of WMD in several of the buildings which we knew were factories, with markers to indicate that they were of recent manufacture and not left over from the days before we pulled Sadaam's teeth and turned him into a genial empty suit with no power and no influence.
Not only that, we have hours and hours of audio tape of Sadaam and his top aides boasting how they fooled the "dumb UN" and what to do with their WMD if the US attacks.
Posted by: kimberly4bush at June 13, 2006 09:57 AM
Kimberly, you are missing the point. No one is disputing that Iraq HAD WMD's. Regan, your Republican godsend sold them to him for goodness sakes. Republicans used to be buddy, buddy with old Saddam, posing with him. His murderous tyranny never bothered you then.
Then, Daddy Bush invaded in 91 and between that and the weapons inspectors, they are all taken away or destroyed well before you invaded. Bush even LIED about the inspectors, telling you that Saddam had refused to allow them to inspect, when the truth was he told the inspectors to get out as they were going to start bombing.
